This weekend I am planning the retreat I am going to do in May. After re-considering the possibilities I've decided on the accomodation in France and sent a letter to the owner. He has asked me to call him on Monday to schedule an appointment with him in his practice in Utrecht, so we can discuss what I want to get out of my retreat.
What DO I want to get out of it? Many people have asked me. Someone has rightfully remarked that is seems ironic that I torture myself with a job that stresses me out, and than go into a retreat to get rid of the stress. It would indeed be a mere compensation and part of an endless circle of stress- de-stress- stress- de-stress et cetera. But I see it differently because I am hoping that my time in France will be a starting point for a different life and no continuation of a destructive circle.
Is that too ambitious?
Way too ambitious and also I'm bound to return disappointed if I hold on to that goal. But I can try, and secretly hope, a little, right? I'm not at the point yet where I can live detached of all desires.
I really only want to be away from my house, my family, my village, my friends, my work, obligations, shoulds, my daily environment and hasty rythm, the t-v and phone and laptop and the internet. For a month, at least.
Instead, there will be silence in the country-seat in France. I will get up at 6am every morning for a yoga and meditation session at 6.30, have breakfast at 8, do some chores for two or three hours and have the rest of the day all to myself until 6.30pm when the evening meditation starts and 8pm when dinner is served. It sounds like a pleasant daily routine that can work as a frame for what I am really there for: doing nothing at all. I might read, I'll bring pens and several notebooks, nature around the estate is beautiful so I expect to walk a lot. Who knows, there might be very interesting people to talk with but hopefully they'll mostly be individuals who seek solitude like I intend to.
I don't want there to be newspapers because I'll feel I should read them. And I hope there are no museums or interesting towns because I'll feel I should visit them. Even if they seem pleasant, they are still unconcious shoulds and I am rarely sure anymore if I really want to or feel I should want to.
That, I realize, is the pith of what drives me to do this retreat.
Painting: Daydream with the Figaro, by Jean Beraud (1849-1935). Found at a website I found last night called 'Era's of Elegance', which is a true treat for anyone interested in the romantic sides of the Edwardian, Victorian and other era's.
I loved the rich, special feeling of the Moleskine notebooks for carrying around in your purse or pocket, but couldn't quite see dropping $6 to $10 dollars for one. Instead I bought .77 cent mini composition books and made them special...my own 'faux' Moleskine's

I had fun playing with photoshop for this shot. I took some shots for the Super Hero monthly challenge, theme (school supplies) and thought the shot was a little boring so I started playing with it and this is what I came up with.

Chameleon Notebook customized by Jackie Poutasse TJBookarts. Back cover with the corner pocket and business card holder. The card holder is wide enough for credit or debit cards. I stuck a couple velcro dots at the opening to keep it closed and secure. I may consider having the pocket lower to accommodate 3x5 cards.
Flap with Pilot G2. My Decimo fits in the loop also. I believe Jackie makes the pen loop sized to your specification.
Here are my first efforts in the world of book binding, small A7 sized notebooks, and I have to say I am pretty pleased with them as an initial attempt, which is unusual for me.
I didn’t have any book cloth and it is quite expensive, so I made my own using some old cotton twill trousers. I simply cut out a piece of fabric, laid it on a thick piece of glass, and then overlaid it with a larger piece of tracing paper coated with PVA. I then gently (don’t press too hard) rolled over it with a printing roller and allowed it to dry.

Repurposed clean, brown, paper grocery bags are used for the cover of this small, super deluxe version of my notebooks. Great for your purse, as party favors, or to use as a journal on your road trip this summer. It measures 5 inches high by 3 inches wide when closed. It contains 10 papers which create 20 pages. The papers for writing include graph paper, newsprint, yellow and white notebook paper, and practice writing paper. Each notebook is machine stitched with white thread.
The cover is rubber stamped with the words "road trip" and lined with beautiful repurposed wall paper. The writing paper pages are sandwiched with a page from a vintage cookbook and a map, creating visual interest and reflecting the road trip theme.

I refuse to even watch cops now when its blared at my house. This was one of the final times I watched it with them I think.
