We live in a world where one out of every three women will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime, and 15 out of 16 rapists will never have to spend a day in jail. Despite women’s tremendous gains over the last century, these statistics show that women’s domiciles are still considered public property.
Although rape is a horrendous event, it is far too common. Additionally, 60% of rape victims do not report their rapes to the police. My piece demonstrates that the women harboring a tremendous secret that was done to them are often swallowed up by that horror. Female victims of sexual violence have no place to run from the hands that grab at them and no platform from which to speak about the horrors they’ve experienced. Like the silhouette in this piece, they blend into the background and fade away, becoming invisible girls whom society overlooks, haunted by the faces of their rapists.
When women do report rape, they still cannot always find an end to their suffering. Larger male-dominated forces dictate that they are to blame. They shouldn’t have been drinking, they shouldn’t have been wearing such a short dress, they shouldn’t have been out so late. These attitudes seem outrageous, but really they are commonplace. We are all part of what women’s studies experts call a “rape culture.” When sexism is manifested through sexual violence against women, the violence becomes normalized, just another part of life.

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) is the largest city in Vietnam. It was once known as Prey Nokor, an important Khmer seaport prior to annexation by the Vietnamese in the 17th century.
Under the name Saigon it was the capital of the French colony of Cochinchina and later of the independent state of South Vietnam from 1954 to 1975. In 1976, Saigon merged with the surrounding province of Gia Định and was officially renamed Hồ Chí Minh City (although the name Sài Gòn—formally known as District 1—is still commonly used.)
The War Remnants Museum is a war museum at 28 Vo Van Tan, in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam. It primarily contains exhibits relating to the American phase of the Vietnam War.
Operated by the Vietnamese government, the museum was opened in September 1975 as the "The House for Displaying War Crimes of American Imperialism and the Puppet Government [of South Vietnam]." Later it was known as the Museum of American War Crimes, then as the War Crimes Museum until as recently as 1993. Its current name follows liberalization in Vietnam and the normalization of relations with the United States.
