A special exhibition, "文, 향," kicks off on August 11 at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul, as part of events to mark the 50th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan. The exhibition displays a series of works of art created by both Korean and Japanese artists. Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Kim Jongdeok, too, attends the opening ceremony of the exhibition and admires art pieces on display here.

Watch carefully for the thin shadow that starts at the tip and travels through the knife. This is a phase change in the steel, where it is transitioning from one phase of steel to another, specifically from austenite back into pearlite. If I understand it correctly, that thin shadow appears because it takes energy to change from on phase into another, and so there is less energy that can be emitted as photons of light, so the steel is a bit darker where the phase change is happening. Science is amazing.

My series focuses on addiction, its normalization, and effect on the environment. even though cigarettes aren't as mainstream anymore other things are. And you see them everywhere, you just have to look. This photo in particular was my favorite because you get to see something so beautiful like a flower but something had to ruin it. It is so hard to find something natural and beautiful that is un-touched by society. Everywhere there is the remains of something that people had done to destroy it. You find a beautiful cave, there's graffiti. You go on a hike into the green hillsides, you will find cans, and protein bar rappers. At the same time we have gotten so used to the sight of trash on the side of the road and in the bushes that we don't even take time to notice it anymore, like in this photo, it takes you a second to notice what it tainting the image.
We live in a world where one out of every three women will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime, and 15 out of 16 rapists will never have to spend a day in jail. Despite women’s tremendous gains over the last century, these statistics show that women’s domiciles are still considered public property.
Although rape is a horrendous event, it is far too common. Additionally, 60% of rape victims do not report their rapes to the police. My piece demonstrates that the women harboring a tremendous secret that was done to them are often swallowed up by that horror. Female victims of sexual violence have no place to run from the hands that grab at them and no platform from which to speak about the horrors they’ve experienced. Like the silhouette in this piece, they blend into the background and fade away, becoming invisible girls whom society overlooks, haunted by the faces of their rapists.
When women do report rape, they still cannot always find an end to their suffering. Larger male-dominated forces dictate that they are to blame. They shouldn’t have been drinking, they shouldn’t have been wearing such a short dress, they shouldn’t have been out so late. These attitudes seem outrageous, but really they are commonplace. We are all part of what women’s studies experts call a “rape culture.” When sexism is manifested through sexual violence against women, the violence becomes normalized, just another part of life.
