First winter male Blackpoll Warbler
Cape May Point State Park, Cape May. New Jersey USA.
The sharply marked Blackpoll Warbler is nature’s hearing test, with a high-pitched, almost inaudible song that floats through the boreal forests of Canada. This long-distance athlete weighs less than half an ounce yet makes the longest overwater journey of any songbird—nearly 1,800 miles nonstop over the Atlantic Ocean to its wintering grounds. In the fall, this black-and-white warbler molts into yellow-green plumage and loses its black cap. Although still numerous, it has lost an estimated 88% of its population in the last 40 years.
Thanks to all who take the time to view, comment on and favor my images. It is very much appreciated.

Come now, let us reason together,' says the Lord. 'Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.'
Isaiah 1:18
The New Year is a time of renewal and reflection. May there be greater peace, understanding, forgiveness and love in our hearts. May justice and freedom prevail among the oppressed throughout the world.

Back when Pan Am was running the SJWA/WASJ it was usually pretty nice as they didn't stop at NMJ, most of the time. Back in December of 2010 SJWA or SJPO was about to pass under Rt. 202 in Hampden with traffic from the NBSR. Meanwhile in the distance a C5 Galaxy can be seen making its approach to land at BIA.

A Coyote hunts rodents in winter by listening to their movements beneath the snow pack and then pouncing. It was late on a December afternoon, the sun low and warm. A chance encounter? Not quite. I had worked with this coyote before and found him quite tolerant, provided I stayed in my car. I've had good sessions on foot with coyotes, but this wasn't one of them. Still a special moment as I was very close and the action was nonstop.
It's the lean season. the fat juicy prairie dogs are all far underground, asleep. Grouse are very difficult to catch. Rabbits are fast. Bison are too big; likewise deer (a mule deer buck in his prime can weigh over 200 lbs; male coyotes top out at about 50 lbs and most are smaller). There may be an occasional good feed on winter die-offs of old or injured ungulates (deer, moose, bison) but I believe the staple winter diet for coyotes here consists mainly of mice and voles. Of which we have an abundance.

One of my favorite dive bars is the Blue Room Lounge in Garberville. It's a friendly local watering hole where a man can go to forget, even if he ends up remembering too much. It's an establishment where the bartenders sit down at the bar and join the drinking crowd at the end of their shift, and return to tending bar eight hours later, albeit a little more wobbily. It's the kind of place where they let the patrons sleep with their heads on the bar to recover from long bouts of nonstop drinking. Throw in the subdued twang of the country music on the juke box, and you have the perfect spot to sit and stare comatose into a cocktail for a spell.
Happy Slider's Sunday everyone
