Introduction to the Nine Emperor GodsThe Nine Emperor Gods Jiǔ Huáng Xīng Jūn / Jiǔ Huáng Da Di (九皇星君/九皇大帝) are the nine sons manifested by Father Emperor Zhou Yu Dou Fu Yuan Jun (斗父周御國王天尊) and Mother of the Big Dipper Dou Mu Yuan Jun (斗母元君) who holds the Registrar of Life and Death. The worship of Dou Fu Yuan Jun has declined strongly as proper teachings of Taoism degenerate since being exported out of China. Today, most Nine Emperor God temples do not acknowledge the existence of Dou Fu Yuan Jun. However, Dou Fu Yuan Jun is invoked alongside Dou Mu Yuan Jun in Great Dipper Honouring known as Li Dou (禮斗) ceremonies. According To Priest Long Hua, the 35th Generation Leader of Long Shan Men Taoist Sect (Singapore), honouring the Northern Dipper stars prolongs one's life, eliminate calamities, and absolves sins and past debts of oneself and his family. The term Ye (爺) as in Jiu Huang Ye (九皇爺) loosely translates as "Grandfather", a title worshipers commonly use to bring a more intimate relationship between themselves and the Nine Emperors. The Nine Emperor Gods should not be mixed up with the Wang Ye or Princes of the Ming rebels. Popular folk culture has it that the Nine Emperor Gods are actually sea pirates of the Ming dynasty that plotted to overthrow the Qing dynasty. According to Priest Long Hua, this information is inaccurate and considered derogatory to the actual teachings of Taoism as the Nine Emperor Gods are actually high ranking Star Lords who preside over the movement of planets and coordinate mortal Life and Death issues. The Nine Emperors is formed by the 7 stars of the Big Dipper of the North Ursa Major (visible) and two assistant stars (invisible). When viewed closely, the arrangement of the 7 stars "the ladle"; and the 2 assistant stars on its left and right resembles a Yin-Yang pattern form. The Nine Emperor Stars are:1. Since the arrival of the gods are believed to be through the waterways, processions are held from temples to the sea-shore or river to symbolize this belief. Devotees dressed in traditional white, carrying incense and candles, await the arrival of their excellencies.A carnival-like atmosphere pervades the temple throughout the nine-day festival. During this period of time, the constant tinkling of a prayer bell and chants from the temple priests are heard. Most devotees stay at the temple, eat vegetarian meals and recite continuous chanting of prayer. It is believed that there will be rain throughout the nine days of celebration. The ninth day of the festival is its climax. A procession which draws scores of devotees send the deities back home
Nine nominated ventures were invited to Brussels to pitch their business ideas to an expert audience. They came, they saw, they conquered or as it happened, they came, they pitched and they won.

Nine days later, we closed out the Just Love Festival with the third edition. The party stayed hot until the very end when Paramahamsa Vishwananda guided us through a gentle meditation and sang a sweet bhajan for us. Enjoy these highlights from the last edition of Just Love Festival.

Sears Silvertone Nine Transistor radio from a thrift store in Guthrie.
Guthrie has the best thrift stores, more like junk shops than used clothes stores with an antique booth, like most thrift stores today.

Had the pleasure of photographing NBZ for Blues in Britain magazine last month. Great blues band even 40 years after I'd first seen them.
I pieced the back and included scraps of all the colors from the front.

Day Thirty Nine 2-6-11
"But it hurts when you disapprove all along, and now I try hard to make it. I just want to make you proud. I’m never gonna be good enough for you," Simple Plan. These lyrics pretty much sum up how I'm feeling today. I've always tried my best, and yet none of my achievements have been acknowledged. In your eyes he always came first, but that doesn't matter anymore, I'm done trying to appease you both. I'm tired of trying my best in school, winning contests, joining clubs and classes that you say are good for me, after all it got me nowhere. All I ever got as acknowledgment is my existence constantly getting compared to ------ and I'm sorry I'm never going to be like that person, no matter how hard you try to change me. “Why don't you have a job, ------ had a job at your age,” these questions are what I face walking in from school everyday, getting off of class at five. I'm sorry ------ didn't have an A average in school, did he? No matter what I do, I'm ignored by them, and this used to bother me, not anymore. I don't need you anymore, I'm turning my back on you as you did so many years ago. I'm not going to listen to your stupid recommendations anymore, I mean after all look at how far those words got you. I'm done appeasing you, I'm done being your little puppet, I'm sorry I can't be perfect.

The past was a bad time to be born. Makes me wonder if was easier to believe in destiny or fate, knowing the odds you escaped. Or was it harder, knowing you had to live up to all the siblings your survived? I watch the lasting loss, 9 years unfolded of Annie Eliza, spread out centuries ago on this stone scroll. One more misplaced child of Marshalls, been seeing a lot of those lately. From here in Bear River, to Clarence and St. Croix Cove, they crowd the local cemeteries with children, more than any other family in the county. I sit and stay a while, down in the wet dirt, heading home muddy from new leaves already rotting into winter. Swept in and around, I can see the patterns of autumn winds swirling. Little Annie is the eye of the storm.
