The Small Tortoiseshell is among the most well-known butterflies in Britain and Ireland. The striking and attractive patterning and its appearance at almost any time of the year in urban areas have made it a familiar species. It is one of the first butterflies to be seen in spring and in the autumn it often visits garden flowers in large numbers.

Several months ago, I downloaded the free Nik Collection, but never really gave it much of a try because I'd been using Topaz for so long, it was just easier to go to the familiar than to start learning something new. Also, the few times I did give Nik a try, I found myself at a point where I wanted to do something more with the image that I couldn't do with Nik that I could do with Topaz, so I just reverted back to Topaz.
But, for the most part, I created this b&w image using Nik's Silver EFex Pro, though I did touch it up a bit with Topaz Adjust at the end. I'm quite happy with the results and will likely be giving Nik more of a chance in the future, especially for b&w.

Autumn (and people) at the lake
Another one from my recent visit to beautiful Lake Tegel. When I took the photo, I thought that the guy standing by the boat was taking photos of the glistening autumn lake, but when I zoomed in I saw that he was actually taking a selfie in front of the boat. Well, what did I expect ;) Maybe this was his boat, maybe it was a boat he'd like to own, or maybe just a boat he wanted to show off with. The sunlight on that day had been so strong that the guy actually seemed to merge with it; to me it looks as if he had just emerged from Scotty's transporter beam ;)
Processing infos: This is an HDR made of a three image exposure bracketing, images were combined in HDR Efex Pro. The 7-14 mm is said to be quite prone to flares and also not to handle strong light sources too well, and since I was shooting almost directly into the sun I was curious (and not too confident) about the result. But to my surprise neither were the flaries too overpowering (I actually quite like those purple "spectres"), nor did the sun(star) look that bad at all.
Fun upload for Tuesday, since this image doesn't really fit into any "day themed" groups such as Window Wednesday, Monochrome Thursday, or Fence Friday; Sliders Sunday maybe, but I didn't want to wait until next Sunday ;)

It took 18 wide angle vertical shots for this photo. It is a 6 exposure panorama, where each is comprised of a 3 exposure HDR.
Ritson's Force is a scenic series of cascading waterfalls and pools in the Mosedale Valley of the English Lake District, named after a former local public house landlord, Will Ritson. It is known for its serene setting and "electric blue" water.

Haystacks is one of the most popular fells (hills) in the Lake District, England, despite its modest height of 597 metres (1,959 ft). It is renowned for its rugged beauty, rocky terrain, and hidden tarns (mountain pools), such as Innominate Tarn, where the ashes of the famous guidebook author Alfred Wainwright were scattered as it was his favorite fell. It offers superb panoramic views across the Buttermere and Ennerdale valleys, and several classic walking routes lead to its summit.
Beezley Falls are one of the waterfalls seen on the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail at Ingleton in the Yorkshire Dales.

This is a shot from last summer, as we were travelling back home from Barcelona to Genoa, Italy, by ferry.
The sunset was glorious, and tinged with a sunset-boulevard-kind of symbolism: holidays were over - for me, at least. However I was firmly resolved to enjoy those last shards of holiday, and this implied trying hard to capture the magic of the heavenly dance of that sunset in the open sea.
You could easily think that the title refers to the clouds, and justifiably so - but, well, I badly missed the best bit of the dance... As I discovered soon later, a bit on the left - indeed just out of my framing - there were some dolphins playing in the wake of the ferry at the light of the setting sun. Unfortunately I was entirely focussed on the sunset proper and proportionally unaware of those playful dancing fellows. So you can feel free to understand the heavenly dance as referring uniquely to the clouds; for me it comprises the nice dolphins making fun of me just outside of my precious composition :-(
To be honest, I had been tempted to add some small silhouetted dolphins somewhere in the distance, but upon reflection I changed my mind. Serendipity sometimes dispenses - at her own incontestable discretion - unique shots to the lucky photographer*, but she is a fickle goddess - you can never know whether or when she will lay her charming eyes upon you. So you do not want to play jokes on her - just accept to take her prizes when it happens to stumble upon them - which is, of course, what serendipity truly is :-)
I have obtained this picture by blending an exposure bracketing [-1.7/0/+1.7 EV] by luminosity masks in the Gimp (EXIF data, as usual, refer to the "normal exposure" shot), then I added some final touches with Nik Color Efex Pro 4.
* The most recent example I have seen is a photograph from Iceland by one of my Flickr friends, Christina Bustos: press L and look carefully at the eye of the dragon :-)
Glenridding Beck is a scenic mountain stream (beck is the Cumbrian term) located in the Lake District, Cumbria, England, which flows through the village of Glenridding and into Ullswater. It is a popular spot for outdoor activities, particularly hiking, gorge scrambling (ghyll scrambling), and trail running.
Sprocket, equally as restless as her sister during the short photo session. She darted to the top of the cat tree, which I rotated to get her looking in the right direction for this shot.

This is a long exposure that i did by using my new Nisi ND 1000 Filter. I also used a Nisi GND 0,9 and the CPL Filter.
