This Rufous Crab-Hawk's status is considered to be either a rare visitor or mangrove resident. Which one is this? Guess we won't know as he isn't tagged!

Welcome the Northern Waterthrush.

Saw this very small guy flitting through the underbrush and making his distinct "chink" call.

The Magnolia warbler got its name from ornithologist Alexander Wilson who found this species in Magnolia trees in Mississippi.

The spotted towhee (Pipilo maculatus) is a large New World sparrow. The taxonomy of the towhees has been debated in recent decades, and until 1995 this bird and the eastern towhee were considered a single species, the rufous-sided towhee.

(Setophaga pinus) -- Pine Warbler

A bird true to its name, the Pine Warbler is common in many eastern pine forests and is rarely seen away from pines. These yellowish warblers are hard to spot as they move along high branches to prod clumps of needles with their sturdy bills. If you don’t see them, listen for their steady, musical trill, which sounds very like a Chipping Sparrow or Dark-eyed Junco, which are also common piney-woods sounds through much of the year.

A rare bird. One member of the party remarked that it was 53 years since he had seen one of these! A lifer for me!

For me, this picture is symbolic of our human fragility, and how any one of us can be snared by the hook of death and taken out of this world.

Taking this picture really made me realize how afraid I am of getting into swamp water, and how cold it can be in February.

The blackpoll breeds in forests of northern North America, from Alaska, through most of Canada, the Great Lakes region and New England. They are a common migrant through much of North America. Compared to other warblers they have larger wings. They also have orange legs. Blackpoll warblers have the longest migration of any species of New World warblers.

The seal of Scotland from my new alternate history story about the Scots and Templars discovering America. Notice the Knights Templar cross on the shield and the absence of England's heraldry; in the story, England never becomes a great power. And notice the Harp of Ireland; Celtic Union FTW. :D

Saturday night in the big city. I really liked that red neon and the chrome motorcycle in the window and was lucky to get the woman and child walking in front. Note the guitar playing skeleton in the window as well. Shot from a moving car.

I couldn't think of a better way of celebrating the new year than with my new picture of a girl between worlds. I am constantly inspired by this concept, and I wanted to make it come to life like I have not attempted before. 2013 is going to be a year of trying new things for me. I am breaking out of my comfort zone and expanding it...taking pictures I haven't dared to take before, editing in new ways, and pushing myself creatively. Whatever I can imagine, I can make reality. That is my "slogan" for 2013, and I am hoping to make it truth.

I hope everyone has a great start to the new year. I am off to join in the LA Flickr Gathering, where I have been so lucky..beyond lucky to meet such amazing people so far. Can't wait to shoot with them again today, and already sad for it to be over so soon.

I could have sworn that this Stork came up to us and smiled for the camera. This is an uncropped pic taken 2 years ago in Kernaham. For those who are not familiar with this bird, it is a rather large bird with an average height of 130cm and a wing span of about 240cm!

This is a new version of a picture I made last year. This version is made as a contribution to an illustration challenge on the Whitechapel message board.

New Worlds was a groundbreaking british SF anthology and it's last issue was #222.

The idea with this challenge is to imagine what a magazine like that would look like today and do the cover to an imaginary #223.

More info on the project here: freakangels.com/whitechapel/comments.php?DiscussionID=828...

My idea is to show that the best Science Fiction always is about the ideas and the new worlds these create in our minds.

This is also my 52 Designs for week 19.
