We arrived on the island of Niadub where we spent several days exploring Niadub and the other islands nearby. This picture was taken while on Niadub, or a short distance away.
The San Blas islands are a group of islands in the archipelago de San Blas, located in the Northwest of Panama facing the Caribbean Sea. There are 378 islands within the archipelago and they are scattered around in an area of about 100 square miles. If you leave the Golfo de San Blas by boat you will enter the Caribbean Sea. The majority of the 378 islands have no inhabitants, but on the larger ones you will find the gentle native people known as the Kuna’s. These people can be found on the larger inhabited Islands; Aguja Island, Guanidup Island, Chichimei, Yandup Island and El Porvenir. You may ask yourself What is san blas? San Blas is an autonomous territory in Panama formally called Kuna Yala. sanblas-islands.com
During the rainy season, the trail where this picture was taken was all but inaccessible. However, with all the dry weather we have been having it was good to see that there was a clear path. Observed the juvenile (below) Plumbeous Kite (Ictinia plumbea) following the adult (top) around whilst constantly uttering its cry as if clamouring for attention. Reminded me of some human kids :)

This is a scene along the Sendero del Chorro Macho, or the hike along trails of a nature park called Chorro Macho.
From the signage: The "Chorro Macho" is a 115 foot high waterfall; it is part of the Quebrada Amarilla and it belongs to the watershed of the Anton River, which ultimately discharges its water into the Pacific Ocean, first providing water for irrigation and farming to thousands of families.
We arrived in the town of Los Santos where we put up for the night. Not too surprisingly, there was a parade in progress. This parade differed from others by the quantity of horses participating. The cowboys had the reins in one hand and a bottle of rum in the other.

Not far off the southern coast of Panama City, Panama, is a small island called Taboga Island. It is there where we enjoyed a couple days exploring, walking through the village, to its beach and ascending to the top of its highest point for 360 degree views of the ocean.

This is Pelican Island. Smaller than a football field, it has seven coconut palms and a small house occupied by a family, two grown men and their mother. We, Marlene and I, were dropped off here for several hours, alone, while others of our group went to another island. There wasn't much conversation as the family stayed in their house. For a while se snorkeled around the island and then tried to stay out of the sun. We learned that the island is owned by their extended family, each taking a five-month stay on the island exchanged by other family members.

From visiting the island of Chicheme, our boat stopped at Sand Island. It's hardly a real island, more like a sandbar in the middle of the Caribbean. It was nice to jump into its clear waters.

An abstract from a website:
The Metropolitan Natural Park (Parque Natural Metropolitano) is just a few minutes from downtown Panama City. It’s easy to reach by car or taxi and provides travelers with a good daytime excursion while visiting Panama City.
Dry lowland Pacific forest, which is rare in Central America due to deforestation, makes up much of the park. Incredibly, the park’s forest is home to 284 types of trees. The park also protects all kinds of critters, including 254 species of birds, 45 species of mammals, 36 species of reptiles, and 14 species of amphibians. Geoffroy’s tamarins, two-toed sloths and three-toed sloths live here, although you’ll need luck to see them. You’re more likely to spot birds and reptiles.
The park’s five trails cover some 3 miles (5 km). The Mono Tití Road ascends to the top of Cerro Cedro (Cedar’s Hill) and offers impressive views of Panama City.

Mayflower II is an replica reproduction of the 17th century ship that bought the Pilgrims to the new world in 1620. The Mayflower was headed to the Virginia colony, but rough seas caused them to anchor in what is now Provincetown Harbor, Plymouth, Massachusetts. The Pilgrims became the second permanent English settlement in North America, and first colonial settlement in New England. The English ship had 102 passengers and a crew of 30.

A visit to the Panama Canal should be a must if you were in Panama. We did, one day taking the train across the isthmus and on another day upon a tour vessel starting near Panama City to the lock at Gamboa and then return. Anyone interested in more details of the canal I highly recommend reading David McCullough's book, The Path Between the Seas: The Creation of the Panama Canal. This photograph was taken while on that canal cruise. Exiting the locks at Miraflores it arrives at sea level of the Pacific Ocean.

The Snail Kite; Rostrhamus sociabilis is quite the rare visitor here. Seen first this year by a local expert ( G.W. ) next to a busy road, in a location with agricultural plots and with huge drains (with snails) near his perch. I guess he would stay around awhile.
After our overnight on the island of Niadub, we explored the nearby island of Chicheme, a smaller island with fewer residents, beautiful beaches and nice snorkeling. This picture was taken during our short stay on Chicheme.
