As the title suggests... an exercise in color and light. Aside
from an SB800 speedlight and a silver/white reflector... I don't
have studio lighting gear... yet. Nevertheless, I am fascinated
by the idea of controlling light to achieve a desired look and
feel. And so I'm sure like some of you, the set for this shoot
was a complete garage sale of makeshift 'light shaping' items.
THAT would have been the shot to post! =)
And of course, the more... and the closer I look at this... the
more issues I see. There's a lot more work to be done. But then
again, this is a test... only a test. And it all counts as I keep
climbing this learning curve.
One thing I know for sure... OK... two things:
1. MacGyver himself would have smiled at my 'make do with
what I have' set... and...
2. By the end of the shoot... I smelled like I was working the
fragrance counter at Nordstrom!

So much of the Flickr experience for me... is about learning. Learning about photography overall... my camera and lenses specifically... and about story-telling through photography. And once in a while, I just really like to show off an image that I'm particularly happy with. But this... is not one of those times.
This... is a lesson.
I like the low angle and shallow depth of field and light and shadow in this photo... but... it feels incomplete. Empty. And while that too can be 'the story'... this scene is not intentionally empty. It was only to try a low angle, hand-held just off of the pavement. To see what it looked like. That's it.
This two-lane road runs along the east side of the Fox River... and sees somewhat limited traffic. It's a favorite for walkers, runners, and bike riders. I would have loved a few bike riders coming at me... or racing past me from behind. Or a jogger or two... intentional exercise on a lonely stretch of road. Or a vehicle of some kind... something to add to the story. Yeah... that's it... to me, this feels like the setting of the story... the context. All I needed to have done is wait for the story to unfold. Or... with some forethought... make it happen!
It's the art director in me... wanting to make life more complicated for the photographer in me. =)

After discovering the most beautiful freshwater lake in the world a couple of years ago while vacationing with some friends, we knew that we would need to return to take wedding photos there. And that's what we did. I invested in a fabulous camera housing, and we went for it - and it's NOT easy. We were in a place with slippery rocks, fast moving water, and none of us had ever done this before. There was a lot of laughing and splashing and outtakes. And I learned A LOT - mostly that I can't wait to go try again and keep working at it. Because it's awesome.
I need more light. I need more patience. I need slower water. But I'll be back at it in Mexico in November, with three new models.
We won't be shooting in a place known as The Rapids though - that lesson is already learned.
