"No matter how closely you examine the water, glucose, and electrolyte salts in the human brain, you can't find the point where these molecules became conscious."

Type II neurons (green) in the mouse cochlea contact many hair cells, but make up only a small fraction of the neurons in the auditory nerve—the nerve that sends sound information from the ear to the brain. Scientists are just beginning to study the role of Type II neurons in hearing.

neurons are most striking when they seem astronomical.
for grins, and to test a new technique, dye-coated tungsten particles were shot into a plate of primary neural culture with a gene-gun. the more diffuse, amorphous cells are glia (astrocytes), the smaller more varicose ones are neurons (probably only visable if the picture is viewed at a large size).
This confocal microscope image was taken by Jeremy McIntyre, an NIH-supported researcher who studies the biology of smell at the University of Florida College of Medicine.
The image shows a thick mesh of neurons in a small cross section of a mouse’s olfactory bulb, a structure located in the forebrain of all vertebrates, that processes input about odors detected by the nose.

Hand stitched and bound shibori techniques on habotai silk
Image: Pinegate Photographics, Cardiff
Endogenous, meaning ‘from within’, refers to her own Endogenous Depression, but also to the act of giving her inner-most feelings a physical form. This series of sculptures has become the means by which she externalises her continuing battle with depression. Whilst the sculptures represent her inner self, bound by the constraints of depression, their inherent purity and beauty are a testament to the new confidence and inner peace she has gained through her art.
The act of hand stitching and binding the fabric is as important to her as the resulting sculpture. The concept of “the hand healing the mind” is a significant aspect of her work; the repetitive rhythmical action of stitching or binding the cloth being a meditative one. By becoming “one with the cloth” one is taken out of oneself. The act of engaging with the cloth removes one from depressive self-absorption. The realisation of her own depression has led to her preoccupation with how other sufferers envision their own condition. Her resolve is to explore/record these through an extensive series of sculptural pieces.
Her work records the actions found within shibori; stitching, binding, gathering, manipulating and folding - not through the expected dye process, but purely as texture and form. It was whilst in Japan as part of her Embroiderers' Guild mature scholarship studies (May/June 2002) that she first observed the artisans who had spent their entire lives manipulating cloth prior to its being dyed. As a trained musician, she was fascinated to see that the repetitive shibori actions were not only represented on the cloth as pattern and texture, but were also imprinted upon the artisans hands and minds. She wished to learn more about these traditional techniques in order that these skills would not be lost with the passing generations, whilst at the same time developing her own personal shibori vocabulary suitable for the 21st Century.
Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1 May 1852 – 17 October 1934) was a Spanish histologist, physician, pathologist and Nobel laureate. His pioneering investigations of the microscopic structure of the brain were so original and influential that he is considered by many to be the greatest neuroscientist of all time.
This image shows distinct neural connections in a cross section of a mouse’s hippocampus, a region of the brain involved in the memory of facts and events. The large, crescent-shaped area in green is hippocampal zone CA1. Its highly specialized neurons, called place cells, serve as the brain’s GPS system to track location. In red is hippocampal zone CA2. It’s important for forming memories of social interactions. The blue area shows the transmission sites of nerve signals between neurons in the neighboring CA3 zone and dentate gyrus, part of the hippocampus involved in episodic memories.

ora,
capello color topo e baffo.
l'elettorato sente svanire ogni voglia.
D:
- ciao caro.
so che sceglierai me, non puoi non farlo. io sono bella, sono sexy, ti farò provare sensazioni ineguagliabili, e non indosso biancheria intima (flapflap)
S:
- ciao caro.
S:
D:
- oh ma che nnnnoia quella!
io ti porterò a ballare, a sognare, a vivere!
tua
Lui"
I'm actually really happy with the way this one came out. This is a Lichtenberg figure, also known as captured lightning. I won't bore you with the science behind these, but if you are interested, check out this website: capturedlightning.com/frames/lichtenbergs.html.
I put a green gel on my stobe to make it look like a GFP colored neuron, like these I took a picture of at work. The intricacy in this thing is amazing, and its only about 3"x5"x0.5". I uploaded a full size, so check it out.
Strobist info: Vivitar 285HV at 1/4 power with a green gel. Shot straight up through a 2"x1/4" hole cut in a cardboard box, which has aluminum foil tape across the top. Also a 580 EX II 90° camera right, 1/4 power through an umbrella. Camera on a tripod and fine focus using live view on the 40D.

Eastern Ballad
"I speak of love that comes to mind:
The moon is faithful, although blind;
She moves in thought she cannot speak.
Perfect care has made her bleak.
I never dreamed the sea so deep,
The earth so dark; so long my sleep,
I have become another child.
I wake to see the world go wild."

Its been weeks of study, reading, educating, using my right brain.. memorizing terms, concepts, and all things logical. Finally broke through that phase, to a sense of depression. So strange to push so hard to attain something and then on the other side of attaining it you feel a sense of loss. The brain in a magical thing isn't it? Took 2 weeks to get back to even sitting down to my computer... everything felt so foreign after being away. I was a little desperate today to create something... anything and to just get lost in the process of creating something out of nothing. I had no real starting point, just used old images and came up with this. It's out there, but sort of feels like where I have been, in my mind deep in it for the last few weeks. Still loads of learning on the horizon, but right now I will enjoy this view...
Blessings.
