Greater Manchester Police faced one of the greatest challenges in its history yesterday when large-scale incidents of disorder took place in the region. Centered on Manchester city centre and Salford, the incidents caused major disruption and endangered the safety of officers and members of the public.
This afternoon (10/8/11) Chief Constable Peter Fahy thanked users of social networking sites for their help and support over the last 24 hours.

The crew of the Robel Track maintenance Train DR97805 on their way home to the Network Rail Depot adjacent to Retford Station's Platform 2. Seen to the right of the embankment are the floodwaters from the River Idle spilling out onto the flood plain.
The train will run to Thrumpton West Junction, accessing the chord to Retford High Level and their depot.

Like a major city, our cells use a complex transportation network to deliver molecular goods to different destinations. A protein called kinesin (blue) is in charge of moving cargo around inside cells and helping them divide. It's powered by biological fuel called ATP (bright yellow) as it scoots along tube-like cellular tracks called microtubules (gray). Since kinesin's movement helps support cell division, blocking its action could potentially derail cancer.
This picture captures a moment in cellular time, where kinesin is stopped in its tracks. It was derived from images captured through a type of electron microscopy that uses a beam of electrons to produce an intensely magnified, high-resolution snapshot of a sample at extremely low temperatures. Good evening I am Holly reporting for Blythe Network News. Tonight will be a short broadcast as there will a special edition of BNN in the coming week with some breaking news from the East Coast. Amelia has left Rockymountainroz where she had a terrific time in the mountains and got to see first hand Roz working her magic with sunlight. Roz had her work cut out for her taking a picture inventory of Amelia's wonderful gifts. Roz thank you for taking the time to do that so we could all share seeing the beautiful things Amelia has been given. Hosts please remember to take the arrival photo when the girl arrives to you. Amelia's next stop is to the Brass Cupcake and we promise a good time. Leonor had me a bit confused for awhile but she has left Nina and Bruberries (not sure in which order) and is now with Pattie Leal. I am not certain exactly where Pattie Leal lives so I put a blue pushpin in Brazil which has almost no room for another pin! Geo sadly parted with Yennie who took some loving photos of her and is now with Lovedoll in Malaysia. So far l four months in all is running smoothly. I do not know how Sandra Minkidynamite keeps this in order. Please watch for our special report from the East Coast. From all of us at Blythe Network News good night!

Networker turbo units don't usually appear on MYB-BMO services, usuually being confined to shorter distance services from Marylebone and Moor Street to Leamington and Leamington to Stratford services. However, these units were being used on London/Birmingham services due to the need for extras capacity. Chiltern Railways Class 165 Networker Turbos 165008 (looking rather fresh), 165003 and 165018 cruise through Leamington Spa with the 10:34 (8 early) 5R18 Banbury to Birmingham Moor Street ECS.
The final pair of Merseyrail PEP's No 507001 & 507029 head down the final straight towards Unimetals on the South Dock behind Europhoenix/ROG 37884 "Cepheus" on a late running 5Q78 06.05 Birkenhead E.M.U.D - Newport Docks [Unimetals] 507029 is to be scrapped but 507001 will be loaded onto lorries provided by Allelys for onward transport to Derby, where it is expected to be one of a host of trains taking part in The Greatest Gathering for Railway 200 in August. Following its time at Derby, it is expected that 507001 will be moved to its permanent home at the Tanat Valley Light Railway, where it will be on display to visitors to educate about the history of Merseyside's electric railway network.
As part of the lab's new outreach initiative NERSC has started a partnership program with Oakland Technical High School's Computer Science and Technology Academy, a small academy within the larger Oakland Tech High School. On Thursday afternoon June 3rd, 12 students from Oakland Tech and their teacher Emmanuel Onyeador visited the NERSC Oakland Scientific Facility for an introduction to computational science, supercomputer architecture, and a tour of the NERSC machine room. Katie Antypas, a High Performance Computing consultant gave an overview of NERSC Center and an introduction to parallel programming explaining why science problems require such huge computers. Dave Paul, a systems engineer brought out computer nodes and parts from NERSC's older systems and demonstrated how the components have become both more dense and more power efficient as the technology has evolved over time. Each student was able to take home a piece of Seaborg, a Power3 system NERSC decommissioned a few years ago. Finally David Stewart, a network engineer, led the students on a dynamic tour of the machine room, showing not only the computational systems but lifting floor tiles to display the vast networking, cabling and piping infrastructure underneath the floor required to run a center like NERSC.
