Learning is Empowerment

Why did you choose the word empowerment?

Not everybody has access to learning around the world. I have several friends working on big projects to improve that. But, I think that for me, it is about knowledge being everything. It is the key to being able to move forward. It isn't necessarily a right that everybody has access to. So for me, it is the idea of empowerment and being able to harness information and do something useful with that information to better yourself, better your family's life and to also push society forward. This is particularly true if you are sitting in a westernized nation that has great access to education. So, for me, it is very much about empowerment.

Why is lifelong learning important?

There is no way you ever stop learning. Even in a field where you are good and have a lot of experience. I spend a lot of time going to different strategy meetings or dinners because you gain the opportunity to talk through different issues with colleagues that are in different industries. So, I think, even in something that you have a lot of experience in - it is never enough. There is no way to keep up with all the technology the way it is changing and there is no way to run ahead of things too much. You are always learning, I think. Always on that path.

What have you learned recently?

Gosh - I learn new things all the time. We are going to start a crowd rise type of event because we want to build a great network of people who can get involved in helping us fund raise for our charity. We want to use all the different mediums that you can use to do that, so everything from Linkedin to Facebook to Instagram. Then I have to gain an understanding of how to build a strategy based on all those different touch points that people have. We will be creating a viral video and getting our girls involved in that. Then I need to know how to use crowd funding really effectively. It is something that, frankly, I have never had to do, because in corporate America I have worked for 7 billion dollar companies. I have never started something from the ground up. So to understand and learn how that process works - I now have a bunch of young people teaching me how to do it.

Have you read about the latest activity of WikiLeaks about CIA docs? If not, then let me give you a brief version.

As per the news, “WikiLeaks on Tuesday dumped thousands of classified documents onto the Internet, exposing hacking programs used by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency.” “This first installment includes 8,761 documents and files stolen from an isolated high-security network within the CIA’s Center for Cyber Intelligence in Langley, Virginia.”

Learning Is Fulfilling

Why did you choose the word fulfilling?

I chose the word fulfilling because you want to master your field whatever it is and the only way you can do that is by learning everyday. When you continue to learn and you master your subject - that is fulfilling.

Why is lifelong learning important?

First of all I learn every single day. I think I am better at my craft today than I was last year or the year before that and so on. Mastery and overwhelming confidence are the keys to success in any field. The only way that mastery can happen is with lifelong learning, with a quest for knowledge and a hunger for knowledge and just pressing yourself to learn every single solitary day. It is very fulfilling when you achieve that level of mastery. Oscar Wilde, the 19th century Irish playwright and poet, said “I am too old to think I know everything.” Young people think they know everything, but when you are old that is when you realize that you don't know everything. As you get older and you understand how much complexity there is to whatever you are trying to master the more you realize that you have to keep learning.

What have you learned recently?

We all know that the media doesn't always get it right and there are a lot of mistakes out there. I recently read a 21,000 word dissection by a reporter who writes for the magazine Forbes on what he terms the “journalistic fraud” in the coverage of the Israel - Hamas war. It was mind blowing to me the level of journalistic fraud and misrepresentation that the author talked about in the media coverage. It was a fascinating piece to me. That is what I learned recently.

Learning Is Transformation

Why did you choose the word transformation?

I run a global organization and so I have been around the world on behalf of Microsoft talking about the importance of learning. What we have seen is that when we provide great learning assets and great learning opportunities in cultures where people are really interested in learning, it transforms their lives. So learning can be that transformation element that propels them into a future of success and prosperity. It is just super heart warming how that can happen. I think learning is the basis of that transformation.

Why is lifelong learning important?

If you are not learning and growing how can you possibly innovate? How can you take advantage of previous innovations if you are not learning. New innovations happen when people learn from others – both their failures and their successes and are then able to build on those successes. Innovation won't happen if you are not trying to learn and are not passionate around growing and learning yourself.

What have you learned recently?

Personally, I am learning how to ride mountain bikes which would seem really easy because it is just a bicycle, but it is not easy. It is really technical and there is a lot of equipment associated with it, so I am learning that. On the professional side, I decided to get certified on a Microsoft technology myself, so I could go through the process that our customers go through. So I read the book, I took the practice exams several times, I went and took the exam, so I got to go through the sign up process, go to the test center, take the exam and go through the whole process of what happens after you are certified. So that was a great learning experience for me, not just from the perspective of learning a new skill and testing on it, but learning what our customers experience from our product.

Learning is Essential!

Why did you choose the word essential?

Learning is essential. I think not just for me, but for everybody. This is so important in the world that we live in - that is changing so constantly. Watch the news for an hour and you know what I am talking about. We know a lot about technology and how much technology is changing the face of society and the way that we do business and the way we communicate with each other. You can see different global trends that are happening that affect everything really, from economics to military to you name it. If you are not keeping up on what is happening whether it be in your life or your career or your business, you are really going to be left behind. We see this often really often – time and time again. People who kind of sit back and think that you can just nail it in without doing the work, no matter what they are doing. They don't usually do too well. So, it is important to stay on top of what is going on around you and what will be happening around you in the future You have keep learning if you want to succeed and if you want to do well.

Why is lifelong learning important?

Personally, I think it is important because I would not be where I am today if I had not embraced learning. I think a lot of people can say the same. I got into journalism which was my core career, because I was curious. I knew from my early experiences in it that if I did it professionally I would essentially never be bored. I always wanted to know a lot about a lot of different things. I had this curiosity that was hard to satisfy. So being a journalist, you think I got into this because I was curious and well now I have to put this into practice. I have had times when I was covering crime, which is a very interesting thing. You have to know a lot about a lot of different things such as the criminal justice system, about people with different disorders and you have to know about the law. Then you can be switched to a whole different beat which I has happened to me such as switching to cover politics. Crime and politics some people may think they are the same thing, but they are pretty much not. So thinking about okay how do you get to the story? How do you build a relationship with these kind of people so they will trust you? You need them to give you information. You have to do your own studying. You have to do your own homework. In many cases when you are doing something like researching a story or writing a book, or you are doing something that is more involved like pure scientific research, there are a a lot of pieces that go into something like that. For me, it has been something that is essential, but also something I sort of chose because of my natural curiosity about things. In my career today, living in this world of CIOs and aspiring CIOs and thought leaders and influencers, everything is changing around us very quickly and you have to stay on top of things. For me, it is something I have to stay on top of and I have to be constantly talking to people and constantly reading and researching into who might have a window on what is going to be happening in the future. For me, lifelong learning is just something you have to embrace and if you don't, you will be left behind.

What have you learned lately?

I am actually going through purchasing a house for the first time. There is a lot of things that go into that, from searching for a house, talking to brokers and trying to figure out what you want in a house. And you are thinking to yourself, okay, there is a lot of things, I can learn about in the process. I did this and I was researching this well before we actually got into the buying process. And just looking at the market and the towns we want to live in, looking at what home prices were, looking at the financing and whatever other things come into play in the initial stage. Those are things I sought out. Those are things I wanted to learn. Then you get further into the process and all of a sudden there are new things to learn So for example, you are going through a house inspection and really going top to bottom and learning all the inner workings of a house not only inside, but outside and on the property and everything that goes with that. It is not something I have done before. It has been an interesting experience. There have been a number of things that I had to take away and I have to go learn a lot about. I know that. If my wife and I are going to own this house, there are different things you have to maintain, there are different things you have to take care, there are different people you are going to rely on. If you think about it, it is like a corporate executive - some things you are going to outsource, some things you are going to have consultants for, and some you are going to have to hire your own. It is a whole new process for me. It is whole new experience that I never had to think about before. Now I am neck deep in it, so I have to go and study up and learn a little more. But one good thing about it is, for me, is that it is totally fascinating.

Learning Is Humbling

Why did you choose the word humbling?

Certainly in my case, having gone to school in India and having picked up and moved to a new location, I have had to relearn a lot of things and often times it has been a very humbling experience. There are certain things in life, that you take for granted perhaps. You reach a point in your life, even if you are young, where you have certain assumptions as to how the world works and how people operate. And having those systematically broken down in many respects and having to build up is a humbling experience. Ultimately, you emerge stronger and you emerge as someone who is more of a global citizen, who can operate across environments. But certainly, the first few times that you realize that your whole set of assumptions is wrong, it leads to questioning and self doubt and it can be both humbling as well as humiliating.

Why is learning important?

Learning is important because the world is complex and it is large and it is diverse. I think that being in a place where one is comfortable you can lose sight of that. Being in a routine works until it doesn't anymore. For example, I see people who have moved to India for reasons such as their job has changed or the global macro economic landscape has changed. Sometimes they are ill prepared for it, because they have taken a lot for granted. I think that continuing to be open and having an inquiring mind prepares you for success and prepares you to be able to take on life's challenges, which may be lurking right around the corner.

What have you learned recently?

To go with your gut. I think that some of the best decisions that I have made in life have been when I have done something that perhaps was viewed as stepping out of line. I think that listening to the proclamations of the experts or those that have been there before is important and should be put into your consideration set but ultimately you have to do what feels right and go where your convictions lead you.

Learning Is Living

Why did you choose the word learning?

I have always approached life as a continuous learning experience. I have thought about what's the one regret I will have on the last day of my life and it will be that I have not learned enough. That is the way I approach everyday. So to me, learning is the reason to live. It gives me the energy to live. It gives me the the reason to do everything.

Why is lifelong learning important?

I actually think learning extends your life. It keeps your mind active and while it is important to keep your body active – in my view it is more important to keep your mind active. If you keep learning you can live longer, if that is your objective. My objective is to live a very long life.

What have you learned lately?

There was this quick back and forth interview that I did recently with the New York Times reporter Adam Black. He posted the interview on the New York Times web site. What is fascinating is the headline that he used and the impact it had on people. It is amazing to me the number of people across the globe who reached out to me just based on that headline. So what I learned is something about the importance of words. What I said in that interview was the same things I have said many times. Lots of people have heard me talk about the subject matter and lots of people have captured it. It is a question of how you capture it. One word makes a difference. In today's world, that one word does make a difference because it can go viral on the Internet. This provided a huge learning opportunity for me. One - I learned to be careful about every word I use. And two I learned that it is very important to think carefully when you are writing or speaking to an audience because with the right words you can get a really big bang for your buck and get people to listen to your ideas.

Learning is a Must!

Why did you choose the word must?

I chose the word must in terms of learning because an interest in learning separates the mid level performer from a top performer.

Why is lifelong learning important?

In the area of IT, where everything is rapidly changing, makes it essential to really stay on top of things - one for your personal improvement as well as the benefit for the organization.

What have you learned recently?

I just recently got back from one of our Advanced Practice Council sessions in Philadelphia. We had the CIO of the FCC there to present in the area of cyber security. This is an area I have been following recently. I understand a little bit of the impact but I wasn't really prepared for what he had to present and how serious and how problematic things could get in a very short time frame. It is not a matter of “if”. It is actually a matter of when. As an organization the question is whether we are prepared to handle it The outcome if we are not prepared would be devastating.
