Learning is Giving

Why did you choose the words life giving?

As human beings on this planet, there is so much to do, so much to explore and find out about. Just to be afraid and to choose not to expand ones horizons is such a tragedy. We have so many ways to do it now with the Internet, the World Wide Web, with people from every walk of life, every culture, every country, putting their perspectives on to the web. There is something about being human which takes us out of ourselves, whether it is our imagination or our physicality and learning unlocks that. That is why to live is to learn.

Why is lifelong learning important?

The human species has never had a situation where learning is so exciting. Why would you choose to stick and stay in one room – the room of a closed mind, when you can holiday on the farthest beaches and shores of imagination which is not imagination, it is real. Learning gives us wings to do that. To have an exploring mind enriches us in every way possible.

What have you learned recently?

The thing that I have learned recently is from a wonderful guy, a dear friend of mine. He is a grandfather – with a little boy. And he is an auditor. He works with numbers. I spoke to him the other day. He said, “I have just learned how to be a magician. I have gone off and I am learning how to do magic tricks.” And I thought, hang on, I would not be surprised if you, I don't know, were learning some more computer skills or if you were learning Final Cut Pro to edit something - but you are doing a disappearing watch trick or something. He said, “I wanted to entertain my little grandson.” What I loved about that was, first off that he wanted to engage his grandson like that, but also he wasn't afraid to go off and learn something. To learn something completely irrelevant to what he does for a his career. But relevant to who he is as a human being embracing understanding. Many of us especially me, have trouble thinking I wouldn't be very good at that so I don't want to learn it. It is like when you pay someone to clean your house but before they come you clean it because they can't just see a mess. And many of us go well I can't go to a course to learn Final Cut Pro because, really, I would look stupid. So before I go to a course I would have to learn Final Cut Pro just a bit, so when I go I will be fine. That kind of thinking holds you back from learning. But this guy just says I am going to learn how to be a magician. Fantastic!

Learning is Fundamental

Why did you choose the word fundamental?

Increasingly, we are living in a world that is not based on machines and hammers but really our minds – knowledge. So to me, learning is fundamental. It is the key to success in business or basically in any endeavor. I like to say fundamental with the emphasis on FUN as I think it not just really important in terms of a lifelong exercise but also something that really is engaging. It gets you up. You are exposed to new ideas – you brainstorm. A lot of great innovations come about from bringing ideas together from different fields. So to me that is the really fun and exhilarating part of the whole process. I would say learning is fundamental with an emphasis on FUN.

Why is lifelong learning important?

I just think that we are in a world that always changes. There is so much knowledge to be gained out there. There is a lot of information but knowledge to be gained. That lifelong learning is essential to being able to understand what is going on but also to change your views. So to me, first of all, it is exciting and it is interesting and it is engaging. But I think It is also the key to being able to navigate in a world that is constantly changing. That is what I am trying to think about - how to improve to be in sync and to understand things more effectively. That requires constant improvement – mental improvement and that is learning.

What have you learned recently?

There is a book I recently read, which I really loved by Ed Catmull called Creativity Ink: Overcoming the Unseen Forces that Stand in the Way of True Inspiration. He is the president of Pixar, the movie company. I love the book for many reasons. But one of them is that he really underscores the importance of having cognitive diversity so an organization needs to have people with different points of view. But he also emphasized the notion of working toward a common purpose. So it is not just about disagreeing with each other but having really having constructive feedback to move us all toward a goal. I really love that concept – the combination of cognitive diversity and making sure that we can disagree with each other if there is something we disagree on, but at the same time recognizing that we are there for the same purpose and that feedback should be constructive and move us both toward a goal. I think that is an inspirational message. I think it is really hard to emulate, but if we can all take little steps in that direction the world would be a better place.
