Learning Is Doing
Why did you choose the word doing?
When we think of learning, a lot of times it seems to refer to things academic and that you have to go to a book and get a piece of knowledge out of it. I think the most learning I've done is actually from trying to do stuff. Maybe fifty percent of the time (hopefully it is not 50% of the time) it doesn't work then I try it again and it works. I think sometimes knowing is not enough and you have to actually jump in and try something. Then you will figure it out if it works and or it doesn't. Doing is a great way to really experience something instead of just thinking you know it.
Why is lifelong learning important?
Just to stay engaged and be interested in what is going on is just good for ones self. There are so many people who are doing interesting things out there that you can learn from. You will only benefit from continuing to learn from those folks. I do a lot of things that are unrelated to work that are interesting to do. It could be simple things like I did fantasy football for the first time a couple years ago. I love football but I never really thought I would be interested in this kind of game. I don't think that learning has to be something that is daunting and it doesn't have to mean that you are going to get a PhD in something. It could an be just pushing yourself out of your comfort zone a little bit. By doing that your will find things that you are passionate or interested in. So take the mundane example of fantasy football. Two years ago I had never done it and now I am in two football fantasy leagues this year and I have realized it is something that interests me. It just makes life more interesting if you continue to learn new skills and learn from new people and meet interesting folks that can help teach you things.
What have you learned lately?
I dropped my daughter off at school - kindergarten yesterday for the first time. And I think what I learned was that is that she is much more resilient that I am. I was much more nervous about her first day of school than she was. So I think sometimes I don't give her credit for being more grownup than I am. So she was like, “Bye Daddy” and she went right in with the attitude that this was going to be a totally amazing experience and here I am worried about every little thing. So it sort of put it things in perspective for me that I and my wife over worry about hings and that she will be fine. She is not the first kid o go to kindergarten and she won't be the last. She will just be all right and that was my most recent learning from watching my daughter.

Why did you choose the word life?
Learning is life. Learning is being alive - literally. If you stop learning, you are dead You are dead - you are not learning.
Why is lifelong learning important?
We learn, we now know, from the moment we are born. The brain is just like a sponge just sucking it all up up all the way to the end if we are lucky. It is what existence is really about. There is always something you don't know. Ignorance is no sin. But willful ignorance, to me, if there is such a thing as sin, and I doubt it – but, if there is, - then willful ignorance, to me, is the only sin. Because it is willful. It is deliberately not wanting to know. And that seems to me, if it is averting ones eyes to human suffering to be a sin. I want to know - because then maybe I can do something about it. Or if it is averting your eyes from your own faults. I want to know. Whatever it is, if it is an aversion of the truth or what is there or you can expand it to knowing. It doesn't even seem to be arguable. It is life. It is being alive.
What have you learned recently?
Well, yesterday I learned a new app for my show. I edit the show and then my engineer, he applies his magic splicers. But this was a new program. I made up my mind I was going to learn it..And I learned it. Also, I had a dinner party recently, and I did what you are never supposed to do - which is to cook something you haven't cooked ever before – for guests. But I did. It was wonderful. It was very good. You know that phrase - when was the last time you did something for the first time? Well, I try and do that now and then. It keeps me on my toes.
