Neem leaf, also known as ‘neem ke patte‘ in Hindi is an essential ingredient in many Ayurveda medicines.
The path gets lost in the jungle. The langurs love this part of the forest, especially the small leaves of the Neem Tree in the left background. They are said to be effective against hepatitis, ulcers, leprosy, hives, thyroid diseases and digestive disorders, and allegedly even help with diabetes mellitus and cancer, as well as lowering cholesterol levels.

Just in the middle of a little narrow through street

Voor deze foto neem ik jullie graag mee naar dag op dag zeven jaar geleden. Op woensdag 9 januari 2019 was ik onderweg richting Hennuyères, toen ik op mijn smartphone — die ik ook als GPS gebruik — plots een melding kreeg: “5528 onderweg naar Quenast.”
Op de terugweg vanuit Hennuyères reed ik meteen langs het station van Quenast, waar ik de locomotief al van ver zag blinken in de bundel — samen met de 5537. Met veiligheidshesje aan trok ik vervolgens ook zelf de bundel in. Intussen kwam ook de blauwe 5540 binnen met een lege ballasttrein. Op amper enkele honderden meters van elkaar stonden zo drie verschillende kleurstellingen van deze locreeks bijeen.
Na wat wachten werd de beladen ballasttrein gekoppeld aan de 5528 en haar zusterloc. Samen met vijf andere fotografen — waaronder ook Wouter, die net als ik de tip had binnengekregen — volgde een uitgebreide fotosessie van de gereedstaande ballasttrein richting Antwerpen-Noord.
Heerlijk om even terug te blikken naar die jaren.

For this photo, I’d like to take you back to exactly seven years ago. On Wednesday, 9 January 2019, I was on my way to Hennuyères when a notification suddenly popped up on my smartphone — which I also use as my GPS: “5528 en route to Quenast.”
On my way back from Hennuyères, I immediately passed by Quenast station, where I could already see the locomotive gleaming in the yard — together with 5537. Wearing a high-visibility vest, I then entered the yard myself. Meanwhile, the blue 5540 arrived with an empty ballast train. Within just a few hundred metres, three different liveries of this locomotive class were gathered in one place.
After some waiting, the loaded ballast train was coupled to 5528 and her sister locomotive. Together with five other photographers — including Wouter, who had also received the tip — an extensive photo session followed of the ballast train ready to depart towards Antwerp North.
A wonderful moment to look back on those years.

This Neem tree (Botanical name Azadirachta indica) died many years ago but still standing high.
They tried to burn it down but it didn’t catch fire 🤔! So, they decided to leave it. (There’s an old myth going around here, that some of the trees by the river are night homes for demons).
I went to a favorite agricultural supply store today for neem oil (to treat an insect problem on flowers), and was happy to find resident cat Max resting in an empty birdbath. He always finds the comfiest spots, like those hay bags behind him.
During one of my morning walks, I noticed the sunlight teasing the neem leaves and making them blush!. I had to take the picture.

Nu Wouter jullie ook de doortocht van de “Rotterdam”-locomotief in Botzelaer heeft laten zien — echt één van de highlights van de namiddag — neem ik jullie graag verder mee op onze fotodag van begin maart, die plaatsvond in echte lente-omstandigheden.
Aangezien we in de ochtend de tip hadden gekregen dat er in de late namiddag een trein van DB Cargo via lijn 37 richting Duitsland zou rijden, besloten we eerst even te kijken of we rond lijn 39 een geschikte plek konden vinden om die te fotograferen. Door de zonnestand, maar ook omdat de kabelkanalen tussen Montzen en Welkenraedt vervangen werden, vonden we echter niet meteen iets bruikbaars. Op de weinige plaatsen die wel potentieel hadden, vreesden we bovendien dat schaduwen van bomen roet in het eten zouden gooien rond het geplande uur van doorkomst.
We besloten dan ook door te rijden naar het veld in Sint-Martens-Voeren. Ook hier hadden we nog nooit gestaan en het voelde een beetje als een “nu of nooit”-kans, want door de aanplant van jonge boompjes langs de spoorlijn zal deze plek binnen enkele jaren waarschijnlijk tot het verleden behoren.
De locatie leende zich bovendien uitstekend voor het gebruik van hoogstatieven. Aangezien ik er inmiddels twee heb — en Wouter ook de nodige uitrusting bij zich had — besloten we die hier op te stellen.
Waarom deze foto er dan uitziet alsof hij zonder hoogstatief is genomen?
Dat is eenvoudig uit te leggen… Alles stond namelijk nog niet volledig ingesteld toen het achter ons gelegen sein plots groen toonde. De fototoestellen werden dus snel weer naar beneden gehaald en we stelden ons op maaiveldhoogte op voor de doorkomst van de volgende goederentrein. Dat bleek er eentje in opdracht van Lineas te zijn, met op kop een van Akiem gehuurde Traxx en als sleep een hele reeks ECS-containers.
Na het succesvol vastleggen van deze cargo gingen de camera’s opnieuw omhoog. Wouter ondervond wel een probleem met de jacks van de verbinding tussen zijn verlengkabel en de draadontspanner: die pasten niet wegens een verschil in formaat (dat wordt dus een andere verlengkabel bestellen). Uiteindelijk besloot hij dan maar zijn ladder te halen en zijn camera iets hoger te plaatsen dan de bovenste sport van zijn ladder.
We stonden dus weer paraat en hoopten dat het sein snel opnieuw groen zou tonen.
En dan begon het wachten…
En wachten.
En wachten.
Nadat er na een uur nog steeds niets was opgedoken en we hier en daar wat informatie hadden ingewonnen, begon het er sterk op te lijken dat het hier doodstil zou blijven tot na 17 uur. Dat vonden we toch wat lang wachten, dus besloten we ons materiaal weer in te pakken.
Alternatieven vonden we in ’s Herenelderen langs lijn 34 of in Fexhe-le-Haut-Clocher langs lijn 2. Als we bovendien de ICE wilden halen die rond 16u45 in Luik richting Brussel vertrekt, zouden we ons stilaan toch een beetje moeten haasten — zeker gezien de rijtijd met de auto.
We zaten nog maar net in de wagen, klaar om naar onze volgende bestemming te vertrekken, toen plots een fraaie BLS Vectron met een GTS-trein langs ons fotopunt reed… in de richting die wij hadden kunnen fotograferen vanop onze fototoestellen op hoogstatief.
Hadden we nu toch maar vijf minuten langer gewacht… 😅

Now that Wouter has also shown you the passage of the “Rotterdam” locomotive in Botzelaer — truly one of the highlights of the afternoon — I would like to take you further along on our photo day in early March, which took place in real spring-like conditions.
Earlier that morning we had received a tip that a DB Cargo train would head towards Germany via line 37 in the late afternoon, so we first decided to see if we could find a suitable location around line 39 to photograph it. However, due to the position of the sun — and also because the cable ducts between Montzen and Welkenraedt were being replaced — we did not really find anything ideal. At the few spots that did look promising, we also felt that shadows from nearby trees might interfere around the expected passing time.
So we decided to continue to the fields near Sint-Martens-Voeren. We had never photographed there before and it felt a bit like a “now or never” opportunity, because with the planting of young trees along the railway line this location will probably disappear in a few years’ time.
The location was also perfectly suited for the use of high tripods. As I now own two of them — and Wouter had the necessary equipment with him as well — we decided to set them up here.
So why does this photo look as if it was taken without a high tripod?
That is easy to explain… Nothing was fully set up yet when the signal behind us suddenly turned green. The cameras were therefore quickly brought down again and we positioned ourselves at ground level for the passage of the next freight train. It turned out to be one running for Lineas, hauled by a Traxx locomotive leased from Akiem and pulling a long rake of ECS containers.
After successfully capturing this freight train, the cameras were raised again. Wouter did run into a problem with the jacks connecting his extension cable to the cable release: they did not fit due to a difference in size (so ordering another extension cable will be necessary). In the end he decided to fetch his ladder and place his camera slightly higher than the top step of the ladder.
So we were ready once again, hoping the signal would soon turn green again.
And then the waiting began…
And waiting.
And waiting.
After an hour had passed without anything showing up, and after gathering some information here and there, it increasingly seemed that things would remain completely quiet here until after 17:00. That felt like a bit too long to wait, so we decided to pack up our gear again.
Alternative locations were ’s Herenelderen along line 34 or Fexhe-le-Haut-Clocher on line 2. If we also wanted to catch the ICE leaving Liège for Brussels around 16:45, we would already have to start hurrying a little — especially considering the driving time.
We had barely taken our seats in the car, ready to leave for our next destination, when suddenly a beautiful BLS Vectron hauling a GTS train passed our photo location… in the direction we could have photographed from our cameras on the high tripods.
If only we had waited five more minutes… 😅

Neem (Azadirachta indica) is a tree in the mahogany family.In India, the tree is variously known as "Divine Tree," "Heal All," "Nature's Drugstore," "Village Pharmacy" and "Panacea for all diseases."
* All parts of the tree (seeds, leaves, flowers and bark) are used for preparing many different medical preparations.
* Neem oil is used for preparing cosmetics (soap, shampoo, balms and creams), and is useful for skin care such as acne treatment, and keeping skin elasticity.
* Besides its use in traditional Indian medicine the neem tree is of great importance for its anti-desertification properties and possibly as a good carbon dioxide sink.

* Aqueous extracts of neem leaves have demonstrated significant antidiabetic potential.
* Traditionally, teeth cleaning was conducted by the chewing of slender neem branches. Neem twiggs are still collected and sold in markets for this use, and one often sees youngsters in the streets chewing on neem twiggs.
