To reach the port of Ilulissat in late July, ships may have to navigate through the treacherous remnants of ice floes from the nearby glacier. Once we waited until morning to dock.

This lone Roseate Spoonbill was foraging the shallow waters at Celery Field, Florida. It seemed to have some difficulty navigating the thick tangle of vegetation in the fresh-water marsh, and often had mud and other matter (which I'd rather not describe) affixed to its long, flat bill.

♫ Inna - Magical Love ♫

I knew what I saw, you, you will be mine

You're not an angel but you're divine

I try to move forward, you make me rewind

Maybe that's the magic of love

When you use your powers, I can not decline

Take one look into my eyes and read my mind

I try to move forward, you make me rewind

Baby, that's the magic of love

Baby, that's the magic of love

Baby, that's the magic of love

(Maybe, maybe

Maybe that's the magic of love

Maybe, maybe

Maybe that's the magic of love)

This is an overview of how the backwaters interconnect. The backwaters are made up of lakes, rivers and canals. The boats that provide transportation are found in all shapes and sizes. The large boat is one of the house boats made from an old rice barge. Very clever transformation I would say. And now tourists flock to Kerala for an overnight stay on a houseboat.

I see this amazing raccoon a few times a year on the hillside behind my house and in the lightly wooded areas off the meadows. I've seen her with kits in the spring leading them to watering holes and heard raccoons screaming and bickering in the night....a sound that you don't easily forget. At this time of year, I begin to see raccoon tracks in the snow. So far, her one-eyed blindness has not seemed to hold her back from a very capable life in the wild. I'm sure the fact that raccoons are quite intelligent helps her out as well.

While the Females are migrating, male Elephant Seals practice sparring with potential rivals in preparation for the return of the females.

Elephant seals are marine mammals classified under the order Pinnipedia, which, in Latin, means fin-footed.

Elephant seals are considered true seals and fall under the family Phocidae. Phocids (true seals) are characterized by having no external ear and reduced limbs. The reduction of their limbs helps them be more streamlined and move easily in the water. However, it makes navigating on land more difficult because they cannot turn their hind flippers forward to walk.

In addition, the hind flipper of elephant seals have a lot of surface area, which helps propel them in the water. Elephant seals spend the majority of their time (90%) underwater in search of food, and can cover 100 kilometres (60 miles) a day when they head out to sea.

When elephant seals are born, they can weigh up to 36 kilograms (79 pounds) and reach lengths up to 122 cm (4 ft 0 in). Male elephant seals can weigh up to 10 times more than females, and have a large proboscis.

Elephant seals take their name from the large proboscis of the adult male (bull), which resembles an elephant's trunk, and is considered a secondary sexual characteristic. The bull's proboscis is used in producing extraordinarily loud roaring noises, especially during the mating season.

More importantly, however, the nose acts as a sort of re-breather, filled with cavities designed to reabsorb moisture from their exhalations. This is important during the mating season when the seals do not leave the beach to feed, and must conserve body moisture as there is no incoming source of water. Northern elephant seal bulls reach a length of 4.3 to 4.8 m (14 to 16 ft) and the heaviest weigh about 2,500 kg (5,500 lbs.)

Elephant seals spend up to 80% of their lives in the ocean. They can hold their breath for more than 100 minutes. Elephant seals can dive to 1,550 m (5,090 ft) beneath the ocean's surface (the deepest recorded dive of an elephant seal is 1,735 m (5,692 ft).

The average depth of their dives is about 300 to 600 m (1,000 to 2,000 ft), typically for around 20 minutes for females and 60 minutes for males, as they search for their favorite foods, which are skates, rays, squid, octopuses, eels, small sharks and large fish.

These small ducks nest in trees and have amazing flying abilities, they can easily navigate through the trees avoiding branches with ease. This particular female was nesting in a tree trunk and made several sorties out of her nest into neighboring pond.

The moon from my place.

Tasmania is brimming with so many places of natural beauty. This little gem is Dove Lake, which I have been lucky enough to visit twice now. I asked Chat GPT to tell me about it and here is what it said:

Dove Lake Walk, located in the stunning Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park in Tasmania, is considered one of Australia's most beautiful nature walks. It offers a 6-kilometer, 2–3-hour circuit around the glacially carved Dove Lake, nestled directly beneath the towering Cradle Mountain.

The walk takes hikers on a journey through diverse landscapes. As you navigate the undulating path, the walk offers both intimate and epic views of Cradle Mountain and immerses you in the surrounding vegetation. The track undulates around Dove Lake, traverses beneath the mountain, then returns through magnificent rainforest taking you through some of Tasmania's special vegetation, from buttongrass to myrtle, sassafras, fagus and King Billy pine.

Sound tempting? I must correct the narrative though, taking a camera with you extends the time from 2-3 hours to "how long am I allowed to spend taking photos before my companions leave without me"

It's been awhile SL.

In the two years I've been away I've purchased a home, navigated some serious health issues, starting working from home full time and lost someone very dear to me due to Covid-19. SL becomes my refuge when my RL world is broken and honestly I am glad to have it back in my life. Its a strange relationship we develop with our avatars. They are not us but they are connected to us. Annie the avi was due for a little TLC and I honestly had a blast (and went broke! haha) giving her an upgrade.

Glad to be back. Some things are different but also very much the same. I like that.

Slot canyon hiking can be one of the most interesting and challenging activities in red rock canyon country. Over eons of storms, slot canyons were formed by racing water and the tumble of boulders and other debris leaving interesting patterns and colors in the sandstone.

Navigating the large boulders, steep talus slopes, and deep pools requires special gear and skills to maneuver.

The most important skill is possession of a conservative mindset when it comes to when to hike down a slot canyon, and more importantly, when not to hike. Flashfloods can blossom into catastrophic events even when there is little or no precipitation in the immediate vicinity. Far away mountains and plateaus are carved with numerous rivulets, washes, and creeks that funnel rain water into many slot canyons.

My words here come from an experience of having to climb up out of an approaching flashflood and watching many flashfloods from a distance over the years. Stay safe!

Much of what you see was not here years ago. The constant storms take from the Northern Beaches and pile it up here. It's always changing. Thanks for the visit and have a good Weekend.

West Coast Adventure on the packet freighter M. V. Frances Barkley, Port Alberni to Bamfield, British Columbia, and back. The ship brings supplies and mail to communities on Barkley Sound and joining inlets. As we thread our way down British Columbia's Barkley Sound, we come to the Uchucklesit Inlet on the right. The inlet leads to the unincorporated community of Kildona. In 1903 a fish cannery was built there by the Alberni Packing Co. The cannery was the first fish cannery on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Today there isn't much left except for pilings sticking out of the water and a few holiday homes. As we travelled through the Sound, numerous bears, seals, sea lions, and humpback whales were seen. The natural beauty all around us made the journey unforgettable.
