Great way to try and escape the horrible heat/humidity we've been having. It was in the low forties when we visited CL back in June.

Mesquite Dunes, Death Valley NP

The Grand Teton Mountains in the Grand Teton National Park. I took this on the way to Colter Bay Village leaving from Grant Village in Yellowstone National Park. Grant Village is about 40 minutes from Colter Bay Village, 40 minutes from Old Faithful and 40 minutes from Canyon Village in Yellowstone National Park. All in different directions. It's a great place to stay and in the middle of these three sites. West Thumb is located here along with restaurants a gas station and a store.

Upheaval Dome

Upheaval Dome is an impact structure, the deeply eroded remnants of an impact crater, in Canyonlands National Park southwest of the city of Moab, Utah, in the United States. The crater is located in the Island in the Sky section of the park, and is approximately 42 miles (67 km) by vehicle from Moab.

It is approximately 5 km in diameter and the crater is estimated to be less than 170 million years old (Jurassic or younger.) The crater is clearly visible on the surface as bright brown and black concentric rings.

Stratigraphically, the oldest formation exposed in the center of the dome is the Permian Organ Rock Shale. This is overlain by the Permian White Rim Sandstone. Both are sometimes considered part of the Cutler Formation. Overlying these are the Triassic Moenkopi Formation (which is bounded top and bottom by unconformities), the Chinle Formation, the cliff-forming Wingate Sandstone, the Kayenta Formation, and the crossbedded Triassic-Jurassic Navajo Sandstone.

Structurally, the dome is quite anomalous. Most of the rock strata of Canyonlands National Park are flat-lying or gently dipping. The center of the structure is a true dome. Some strata near the center are nearly vertical in orientation. Dips of 70 degrees have been measured in the Kayenta Formation on the U-shaped plateau surrounding the center of the structure. A syncline surrounds the center, where the axis forms a complete circle approximately two miles across. The syncline is primarily visible in the Navajo Sandstone. Another anticline has been mapped to the north of this ring syncline, which is also concentric with it.

There were two well-known theories as to the origin of the upheaval. One theory was the upheaval is a salt dome, an anticlinal structure which occurs when a salt diapir is pushed up by the weight of overlying rocks.

The other theory is an eroded impact crater, like the much younger Meteor Crater near Winslow, Arizona. In the 1990s, a team of geologists and seismologists from NASA and the University of Nevada at Reno performed a detailed study that included seismic refraction and rock mapping. The results of this study support the meteorite theory. In 2008, it was announced that shocked quartz was discovered. This confirmed the meteor impact theory because the rocks were subjected to high pressures only possible in an impact or a nuclear explosion.

For centuries Hellnar was the largest of the fishing villages on the south side of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in Iceland. A church was first built in village in 1833 The church in the photo was constructed in 1945 on the site of the earlier church.

The peak, located inside the boundaries of Snæfellsjökull National Park, is called Stapafell (High Lava or Lava Butte). The pyramid shaped volcanic butte stands 526 meters ( 1726 feet) high and is made up of lava that cooled quickly as it flowed in to the sea. The basaltic "volcanic glass" was quickly altered and devitrified forming a altered volcanic rock called palagonite. The top of the pyramid is capped by a volcanic plug. That rock was called Fellskross by the Vikings who arrived on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula before 1000 AD. Stapafell and Fellskross were sacred places to the early Vikings. Stapafell was believed to be the home of "hidden people” or elves, who protected the Peninsula. Fellskross was the symbol of their power. The area around Snæfellsjökull is rich in lore and stories about elves, trolls, fairies and other 'hidden folk'.

On the fourth day i hiked in Rondane NP. I was told the day before that the view here was the best view someone ever had seen and that made me curious. although I think I have seen more spectacular vistas in my life it was a nice 15 km walk, with very changeable weather. The bare landscape at higher altitudes (>1600m) is one of Norway's attractions.

Norway, a stunningly beautiful country. Around every corner a chance for a scenic image, forcing me from time to time to stop every kilometer to get out of my car, sometimes with screeching brakes, and sometimes forcing me to curse because there was no place to stop.

Lovely valleys, bare mountains and cold winds, snow packs, glaciers, beautiful lakes, and then there are the enchanting fjords that never stop to amaze. The most beautiful country of Europe, for me no doubt about that, with only one minor aspect, which is the weather. During my month of traveling I only had 4 really nice days, the rest of the time clouds, rain, and very changeable! Still no regret, and I will go back to make even more than the 3500 pictures that I took this time.

Another very active vacation that took me to the south west up to Trondheim in a sort of triangle between Oslo- trondheim and Bergen with the whole route visible here (www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10153668247101759&set...).

This was our very first sighting of the lake after driving through dense fog/clouds to get here. At this first pullover, the wind pushed the clouds to the far side for about 5 minutes, so we could have our first of many wow moments. HFF!
