"Notice: Minimum Size Length of 14 Inches For Walleye Taken From These Waters"

Lake Ashtabula/Sheyenne River, North Dakota

March 14th, 2022

A couple weeks back, I noticed an influx of shots of the Indiana Railroad here on Flickr, and they really had me eying the railroad seriously for the first time. Most of what runs on this railroad isn't easy to find information on by any means, but their two flagship SAHW and HWSA manifests have been covered widely enough that you can find them with relative ease. But that was about it, as far as me looking for weekend movements were concerned.

A close friend of mine and I made the 2 1/2 hour drive down to Indianapolis, my state's capitol, on Sunday morning, to celebrate his new job, the coming of warmer days, and to scope out the INRD for both of our first time. We waited around the first public vantage point to get the Senate Avenue-based SAHW leaving the yard. As expected, they left right at 1430, and the properly-lit chase was on. But if you know me well enough, properly-lit subject matter and my camera hardly ever make contact. Chasing the train south of Morgantown and into the state forests revealed to me that this railroad was much much much more scenic than I originally anticipated - certainly blowing any other railroad I've ever shot out of the water! What I also noticed though, was that many more shots (at least from the perspective of my chase route) existed for northbound moves as opposed to southbounds, like the one I was chasing. So, I decided to chase the train to Tulip Trestle and wait for the northbound, backlit HWSA to appear.

And the chase thru (my personal) preferred hazy blown out light was on.

Here is HWSA, the northbound Hiawatha-Senate Avenue Yard manifest, heading east thru what is technically unincorporated Monroe County, Indiana. Lake Lemon can be seen to the right of the frame, while the lush in-bloom greenery of Vaughn Hollow is seen at left.

This railroad is amazing, and I will certainly be back very very soon. If there's enough interest, I'll probably post a few more shots, though they are generic, well-lit scenes that others have shot. This was by far my favorite of the day though!

Notice the unexpected model who flew in to my shot. Surprises are good.

An old barn serves as a frame for a horse that stuck its head out to see what was going on as I stopped to shoot this photo. Many people spend their whole lives seeking to be noticed only to discover that wasn't what they were really looking for...

Flooding and embankment wash-outs at Beattock resulted in a series of last minute freight diversions and alterations to their original plans.

One such example is this - 1S55 from Warrington to Shieldmuir consisting of 325004. The closure of the WCML would have caused the unit to be trapped at Carlisle indefinitely, however 66114 was used at short notice to provide diesel haulage over the unelectrified G&SW route.

This was one of 5 freight services diverted due to this incident alongside the shuttles put on by Avanti. Certainly a good effort by all involved to arrange the diversions at such short notice given the need to find staff with sufficient route knowledge and (in some cases) arrange alternate traction.

I liked the way this tree appears to be pushing its way ahead of the pack in a show-off kind of way. Taken in Hillock Woods, Prices Risborough

Sometimes, all that is needed to be noticed, is to reach a little higher, be a little hungrier, work a little harder than the crowd.

Noticed this fellow down the path at the same time as I heard some bicyclists coming up behind me. Just managed a couple of quick shots before the bird was spooked and away.

Notice the tiny silver ID bracelet this indigo bunting is wearing on his right leg. Wouldn't it be wonderful to know when and where he got that little leg band?

Framed by giant trees that were only saplings when a young, hopeful farmer built a dairy barn, the barn and silo now hold only bushels of silence, their once vibrant life now bathed in subdued tones. As a young teenager, it was a comforting sound to come home from school and walk down our long lane and hear the familiar noises of livestock around the barn.

Notice the green seedpods that are forming.

Schomburgkia, pronounced schom-BURK-ee-ah is a genus of Orchidaceae, The genus was named in honor of Sir Richard Schomburgk (1811-1891) who explored and collected extensively in Guyana and became Director of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens in Australia. Species in this genus are epiphytic or lithophytic. An epiphyte is an organism that grows on the surface of a plant and receives moisture and nutrients from the air, rain, water (in marine environments) or from debris accumulating around it. A lithophyte is a plant that grows on rock.

According to the Royal Horticultural Society, Schom. is the official abbreviation for this genus.

Noticed this mass of brick and glass earlier today, and returned after sunset. Initially shot with the 24mm tilt-shift and they were okay. But when I tilted the entire camera downward, the towers flared outward, and realized it appeared more interesting. The 24mm wasn't wide enough, so returned with the Zeiss 15mm to capture it all.

Edmonton's downtown is transforming; new towers rising, and older towers are being re-clad.

I noticed the bent unpromising stalk yesterday as I shot the orange flower.

beauty in my home

Notice the gray crown on a female red-bellied woodpecker's head. Here's a decent look at her red belly too.

I loved the door knob, and the polite request.

Notice the teetering chimney from the previous photo resting on a wooden platform. I guess they wanted to save money on bricks.

I noticed this pair of older Volkswagen Beetles a few weeks ago and have been waiting for the right time, sun and no rain to photograph them. I loaded a piece of 8x10 Impossible in the film holder and with camera and tripod off I went. Note that the Polaroid 8x10 film holder is dedicated to the processor and you only load one side unlike standard sheet film holders which allow two frames per holder. So I have one frame of film, camera set up, meter reading taken and I pull the cover out of the holder and wait a second before uncovering the lens so the camera can settle. WHAT THE HEY the lens cover slid open in transit so my image was getting exposure all the time after pulling the cover slide, movement and overexposure were assured. The is no compensation for error in developing time so what you shoot is what you get. I was not happy about screwing up a $20.00 piece of film so I didn't process it until the next day yet after I did I liked it, errors and all.

I do not recall whether these individuals were waiting to cross the street , or perhaps waiting for a bus, but as I approached the street I could not help but to notice that this group of apparently unrelated individuals were all standing with their arms crossed while waiting... . and with interesting facial expressions.
