Cradled by the mountains, Ouray is snuggled in by the starry night. A very small town, with little to no light population; the milky way watches over like a guardian angel.
This shot is made by two different images. The milky way image was actually shot behind the town of Ouray on the opposite side. The sky looked so plain in the background, and I felt it didn't emphasis Ouray's isolation enough. I took a long exposure of the town itself leaving room for the milky way to be PS'ed into the image. Then the swung my tripod 180 degrees and took a long exposure shot of the milky way. I took multiple shots of both locations so I had more photos to work with. Once this was done, I used PS to complete my desired effect.
Gatlinburg Nestled into the Great Smoky Mountains
Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee
Date taken: April 22, 2017
Following the fires in 2016, I knew that the physical landscape would be outwardly different during my spring visit. I had no desire to be gratuitous in chasing the resultant devastation or ruin outright; however, I did want to include the fire damage in a broader sense, especially with respect to the natural recovery. Driving around Gatlinburg, the destruction was simply too close. Torched earth and abandoned buildings being actively raised. The most appealing view, to me, was from up on the Gatlinburg Bypass where the damage was all around me quite literally, as well as in targeted areas out into the scene before me. It was mixed, however, with areas untouched and areas actively recovering. The effect, overall, was more honest to me.
Returning day after day in search of complimentary conditions, I found myself one morning on the edge of something that was almost. A thick blanket of fog was rolling in and out of the valley, responding directly to the weak sunlight that would occasionally find a hole in the cloud cover. The warm light would burn off the mist and splash warm light onto the town one moment only to pass behind the curtain once again, returning the landscape to low visibility and obscured detail. The significance of the moments of warm orange light on the smoky fog over the post-fire landscape and town was not lost on me.
Shortly after the morning this was shot, the rains began falling in the Smokies and didn't stop. Days of rain brought dangerous flooding conditions to the area. I packed up my streamside tent and wrapped up my spring season in the Smokies earlier than planned. Until next year...

My goal with this series is to explore every day scenes under the cover of darkness. A street corner, a lamp post, a doorway. Big city, small town, urban, rural. Man-made light versus nature’s darkness–––light and shadow interpreting minimalist settings in black and white. To see more in this series, check out Cover Of Darkness
Early on in the COVER OF DARKNESS series, I shot a couple gas stations. They were not initially the type scene I was looking to capture, but when I came across one late at night, bright and isolated in the darkness, it was impossible for me to resist, so I continue to shoot them. I have now shot enough that they have become a series-within-the-series. For a look at them as a collection, check out, Gas Stations

In Akaora with my Flickr and blip friend. February 22, 2016 Akaroa, New Zealand.
The day was cold and felt like rain but it didn't. We had a good look around Ōnuku.
This small church on the Onuku Maori reserve near Akaroa is the only tangible reminder of the once thriving Maori community. Completed in 1878 the church was planned to accommodate sixty people and though primarily for the Maori local, Pakeha settlers were also welcome.
A plain timber building with steeply pitched shingle roof its religious purpose is denoted by the tiny bell turret and surmounting crosses. It is picturesquely set in the bay on Akaroa Harbour and is enclosed by a delightfully unregimented picket fence.
Despite infrequent use the church is carefully maintained and is in excellent order. It is important as a memorial to the Onuku Maori and as the only Maori Church remaining on Banks Peninsula.

Thanks so much for all the support! I really do appreciate it! Happy Holidays! 😊
I really am a sucker for rock and water combos. I particularly liked the way the stones connected together in this one. The subtle range of colours was fascinating.

The New Forest in Hampshire is my idea of Heaven....everything is abundant and covered in moss and the colours in Autumn lift the soul ;-))

We had very low expectations for this morning. With an overcast sky we just went thru the motions: got up early, loaded the car and drove to the Butte. As expected, the view was spectacular, but the light was muted. But then, all of the sudden there was a small break in the cloud cover and rising sun spotlighted the hills for a brief moment. What a morning to start the day…

Had a wonderful trip to the Berkshires in Massachusettes and the Hudson Valley of New York.
There are a number of beautiful public gardens in the Dandenong Ranges. This is at the George Tindale Memorial Gardens where the front of the house is nestled down the slope surrounded by beautiful Hydrangeas and other plants. An Oasis of green and flowers on a hot summers day.. Using my Lensbaby to get that edge blur. Happy Window Wednesday.

Disco Warehouse in New Orleans has a glorious "backyard" full of stunning plants! I DID want every one of them, but nope, didn't buy any. Some of the huge ones were just fantastic!
