Looking for the Belgian flag in the middle of nowhere - Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

For a while there, it seemed like craziness was in the air. We were all just breathing it in.

Mount Jerai

This fern was captured at Mount Jerai peak. Hundreds of fern species can be found in the rainforest of Malaysia. Ferns, also known as pteridophyte are commonly found growing wild in Malaysia due to the hot and wet climate favoured by ferns. Some ferns grow clinging onto tree limbs without doing any harm to the host trees (know as epiphytes), while the others grow upright from the forest floor or creep over rocks. In the jungle, tree ferns grow like giant umbrellas on sticks up to 10 metres with 4-metre long leaves.

A Six Nations Rugby special was run from Wales to Edinburgh for the International fixture at Murrayfield. The following Monday the special returned to Wales with DRS providing the traction. Here at Niddrie West Junction 68004 heads 1Z69 from Edinburgh to Carmathen at 1135 on the 27th February 2017.

With the ECS leaving Motherwell late the train went direct to Edinburgh Waverley and then ran round the 'Sub' on its way south, instead of the ECS coming this way first.

52 Weeks Project

Place de la Nation was still a white spot on the «52-Weeks map» of Paris...

Location: Place de la Nation, Jardin de Marianne, Paris (F)

Coordinates: Click on the link to see the exact location on Google Maps:

48°50'54.0"N 2°23'46.5"E

Reason: I came along this square, roundabout, arterial road, circular park and landmark of the city of Paris and that was for me the ultimate moment of the week for a self portrait à la cinquante-deux semaines.

Place de la Nation: The Place de la Nation (formerly Place du Trône, subsequently Place du Trône-Renversé during the Revolution) is a circle on the eastern side of Paris, between Place de la Bastille and the Bois de Vincennes, on the border of the 11th and 12th arrondissements.

Widely known for having the most active guillotines during the French Revolution, the square was renamed Place de la Nation on Bastille Day, 14 July 1880, under the Third Republic.

The square includes a large bronze sculpture by Aimé-Jules Dalou, the Triumph of the Republic depicting Marianne, and is encircled by shops and a flower garden. It is served by the Paris Metro station Nation (1, 2, 6, 9) including RER (A)

The United Nations joins landmarks around the world as it turns off lights at its New York Headquarters and other locations, in observance of "Earth Hour". The event takes place one week after the vernal equinox, and is organized by the global conservation group the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), which asks everyone to turn off their lights for one hour starting at 8:30 p.m. local time, to support action on climate change.

West view of the All nations gate at Persepolis. This gate was not on Darius the great's initial plan for Persepolis but was added by his son and sucessor Xerxes. The initial main entrance of the palace complex was located on the south wall of the terrace supporting the palaces. Xerxes changed it, added a monumental stairway on the west side leading to that gate upstairs. The function of the gate was not only to allow the entry of the visitors, but was also to separate the people according to their social importance. The gate was a square hypostyle hall, with 3 doors. The few nobles and princes allowed to enter the royal palace were directed through the south door to a court opening on the Tachara (Darius's audience hall) or to the Tripylon palace, while the others were directed trough the east door on an alley leading to another gate (unfinished) and then the east barackments or the 100 column palace (said Xerxes's audience hall). The 4 columns are well preserved and supported a 18.5 meters high roof. The columns are ionian styllized, erected on inversed bell shapes, their top consisted in stylized palm trees. The walls were decorated with 2 giant bulls on the west, and 2 giant lamassus (androcephalic winged bulls) on the east protecting the path. The gate carry also a royal trilingual achaemenian cuneiform inscription by Xerxes known as XPa (see other pictures of the Ancient Iran set).

The national flower of England is the rose. The flower has been adopted as England's emblem since the time of the Wars of the Roses - civil wars (1455-1485) between the royal house of Lancaster whose emblem was a red rose and the royal house of York whose emblem was a white rose.
