Southsea began as a fashionable 19th-century Victorian seaside resort named Croxton Town, after a Mr Croxton who owned the land.

As the resort grew, it took the name of nearby Southsea Castle, a seafront fort constructed in 1544 for Henry VIII as part of the coastal defence.

We met up with Flickr Friends, Tim and Jane, to enjoy brunch and a walk past the fountains at the castle along to the prom (not forgetting tea and cake) in Southsea.

Thank you for all visits, faves and comments.

Happy weekend to come!

Name Change Explained - I am trying to be a bit less accessible on social media, I noticed that if I googled my name all my photos were there to see, and some were being pinned onto pinterest and other sites without my knowledge. I have stopped tagging my pics or adding them to groups as they can be shared from groups, even if your own Flickr settings are set. It would be a shame to not share my pics with Flickr friends and followers but my pics are not for general use or to be reproduced without my knowledge. They are just a hobby and pastime amongst friends and followers. Thanks for your support, Pamela.

Named for its winter haunts, the Surfbird (Calidris virgata) spends the winter and migration seasons on rocky coastlines pounded by the surf, often clambering about the rocks barely above the reach of the waves. In late spring, this stocky little sandpiper abandons the coast for its nesting grounds, high in the mountains in Yukon Territory and Alaska. Copyright © Kim Toews/All Rights Reserved.

The name Cape Disappointment comes from British explorer John Meares, who named it in 1788 after he mistakenly thought the mouth of the Columbia River was a bay. The bar has sunk over 2,000 large ships and is often called the graveyard of the Pacific. The 53 foot tall lighthouse was constructed in 1856. It was electrified in 1927 and automated in 1937. Another house was built to enable the Coast Guard to monitor ship traffic. Life saving efforts begun in the 1870's by the light keepers led to the establishment of a Coast Guard base.

Despite their name these orchids are not really flowering early this year. On a whole meadow full of them I found only this one plant that has already opened a few of its blossoms. It’s probably due to the cold and wet spring we’ve had.

By the way, according to the English Wikipedia the roots of these orchids were used by witches in love potions, and among its folk names are rather differing terms like “fool’s ballocks” and “Gethsemane” (apparently because “O. mascula grew below the cross of Christ, and the markings on the leaves are drops of Christ's blood”). I’m not entirely sure about the sources of all this, but I always enjoy reading about plants on Wikipedia 😂

The appropriately named "Million Dollar Highway", at almost 11,000 feet (3350 meters) up in the Rocky Mountain high country between Durango and Ouray, Colorado. I have never seen such remarkable color in nature as I have here at the height of autumn on a bright, blue-sky day.

Thanks very much for stopping by. I know it's rough right now, and even simple things can seem difficult. But I'm doing what I can to try to stay positive – focusing on the beauty in the world that I see and have seen around me over the years. I hope you are safe and healthy, wherever in the world you are today. Have a great weekend, everyone!

Without A Name, near Walchensee

Thi picture was done on the terrace off the Uffizi Galleria in Florence (Fierenze).

Named for Charles Andrew Allen, a California taxidermist, the bird was first classified in 1877. An Allen’s hummingbird is about 3 inches long, slightly smaller than Anna’s hummingbirds found in the same gardens. Allen’s are similar to rufous hummers, but that species nests farther north.

Allen’s stick pretty firmly to the land along the shore in California and southern Oregon. In the late summer they head south for central Mexico, around the Mexico City area, to spend the winter. Some may begin leaving in the northern areas of their range in July, while most head south in August. There is a small pocket around Los Angeles and the Channel Islands where the Allen’s hummingbird remains year-round. The Allen’s that winter in Mexico start to head back north early in the year, getting back to their grounds on the Pacific coast as early as January, but typically February and March.
