About the English name common to our flower The Botanical Magazine of 1792 remarks sharply: '"Virginia Stock", a name highly improper, as it is found to be a native of the Mediterranean coast'. Regardless, it often after two centuries still goes by that moniker. The scientific name 'Malcolmia maritima' was devised by William Townsend Aiton (1766-1849) in 1812, to honor famous English nurseryman William Malcolm (fl.1750-1789). Earlier (e.g. by great Linnaeus) it had gone by the generic name 'Cheiranthus'.

This pretty little flower hails originally from the coasts of Greece and Albania but has become naturalised all over the world. Its colors move from white to yellow and a variety of pinks and purples and sometimes even red.

Named in honour of Jack Layton, this ferry terminal commemorates a passionate advocate for social justice and beloved Canadian political leader. Jack Layton served as leader of the federal New Democratic Party from 2003 until his passing in 2011, and was known for his tireless work on housing, environmental sustainability, and equality. A longtime Toronto city councillor, Layton helped shape the city’s progressive spirit. His legacy lives on in the heart of Toronto, where this terminal connects people to the Toronto Islands—one of his favourite places. His wife, Olivia Chow, a fellow champion of social causes, is now the Mayor of Toronto, elected in 2023.

The common name of this species of fungus that typically appears as a round piece of black coal-lik ball attached to a dying or dead tree trunks and branches is King Alfred’s cakes. This name originates from legend that King Alfred (who ruled in 9th century) was mistaken for a soldier by a peasant woman in the house were he was seeking a refuge after the battle. She asked him to look after cakes baking on the fire but he fell asleep…, well, another name for these fungi are coal fungi. Whether this story is true or not difficult to say because it was first told 100 years after the King lived, but the name sticks to the fungus forever.

The scientific name of this common and widespread saprotrophic fungus is Daldinia concentrica. The genus Daldinia is named in honour of Agostino Daldini, a Swiss clergyman and botanist. The specific epithet ‘concentrica’ is self-explanatory if you look at the image above showing concentric rings of the fungal body. This is where black spores are matured and then driven up to the surface and expelled outside through tiny openings. The concentric rings are thought to reflect seasonal growth like tree rings - so it is likely to be about 12 years old. Majority of trees were planted here in 2000. This fungus, when dry, can be used as tinder to light fires, hence another name the tinder bracket.

This specimen was neatly sliced in half by a chainsaw I think when this ash tree trunk was fell down and cleared of branches; a cut through the branch seen on the left. Massive clearance is taken place in this Community Woodland as part of removal ash trees infected with dieback fungus, as well as general maintenance. Primrose Hill Community woodland. The Church is named for St. Thomas the Martyr, Archbishop of Canterbury, who was murdered in his own Cathedral in 1170. The first recorded mention of the church of St. Thomas in Old Winchelsea came in 1215. After floods later in the century the original town of Winchelsea was rebuilt inland. A new church was built near the centre. Work started in 1288 to build a magnificent Gothic church, with a chancel and choir, two side chapels, a central tower, transepts and a great nave. It is believed that the nave was burned down by the French in the 14th century.

Funny name for a small fishing village with a tiny harbour. But this special place in St. John's (Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada) has at least few reasons to come here:

- harbour itself;

- craft indoor area, where you can meet local talents;

- restaurant the Mallard Cottage (the 18th Century, Irish-Newfoundland style building) is always on the list of must visit restaurants of Canada;

- and of course, Quidi Vidi Brewery.

I am not exaggerating, but the best Canadian beer I had here. Local Chocolate Stout is a masterpiece!

I named this little toy sheep Tansy after a real Tansy. Now I've posted this photo in hopes you can see that this is a sheep.

Tansy is a sheep who belongs to my flickr friend April, who has several beautiful sheep and other animals on her farm. Well, I just found out that Tansy is getting old and she is now blind. She needs to be guided around. A lot of adjustment of the yard layout is needed, and is taking place now, Tansy's willingness to learn to find her way will be just as important.

This photo is my way to send good wishes to beautiful, gentle, smiling Tansy and to April and her farm. I mean, let us send good wishes from the heart, that is all and that is everything.

Tansy

I saw the toy sheep at a recent garage sale of a friend, who rescued a special needs little dog, some years ago. I picked this toy out, though at the time I didn't know about Tansy's declining vision. I was drawn to this raggedy little toy sheep the minute I saw her. Her eyes happen to be black embroidery and very small so they are almost invisible, but I didn't even notice until later. when I found out about Tansy So the toy is all the more special because it carries promise.. When I tried to pay for it, my friend insisted I keep it as a gift. Stories like this ... real life stories .... I like to share because they matter.

HSoS!

Named for its least obvious field mark, a faint blush of red on the belly that is rarely seen, the red-bellied woodpecker is the largest common woodpecker of the eastern United States. It can be found in almost any wooded area, including suburban neighborhoods and parks. It is immediately recognized by the black-and-white zebra barring on the back and the red cowl, which is limited to the back of the head in females. Tolerant of humans, it is a regular visitor to feeders, favoring sunflower seed, suet, and fruit. Highly vocal, the most common call is a loud, rolling churr, less sharp than that of the similar red-headed woodpecker. They also make softer kek notes in short series, similar to the call of a flicker. Red-bellied woodpeckers have slowly extended their range north in the past fifty years and are now found to extreme southern Canada.

The name Steven is a boy's name of English origin meaning "garland, crown". When given to me in 1959 it was the 10th most popular boy's name for usa. Today popularity well below that and falling....

Named after Rock Davis a ship builder in the early days of colonization in Australia.

the name Cumelo is actually a combination of the words cucumber and melon, which describes exactly what it is. This fresh, slightly sweet tasting fruit has been grown for centuries in the Italian region of Puglia and has a water content of 90%. The genius thing about it is that it can be used as both a fruit and a vegetable, as its taste really combines both worlds. It is a summer fruit

Viper's-bugloss may have got its common name, 'Viper', from its spotted stem, which is said to resemble a snake's markings, or from the shape of its flowers, which look like the head of a snake. 'Bugloss' comes from the Greek meaning 'ox's tongue' and refers to the rough, tongue-shaped leaves.

I don’t know your name. You don’t have a name as such. But your friends and family know you and recognize you some other way that is outside of my perception. To me, you are the seagull that flew past me on a purple Friday afternoon at 4:40 p.m. You flew so gracefully with your wings almost touching the water.

To me, all seagulls are one Seagull, and I love you! Your calls are as salty and free as the ocean. During this morning’s rainstorm, I looked out my window and saw you soaring high up in the clouds … and I thought how strong you are! No wind or rain can stop you. And how smart and resourceful you are! You live all around the world and you can live in the most remote Arctic ice desert or within a bustling city in Morocco. You are amazing!

And you are beautiful! When I walk with Blanca on the beach and you fly over our heads, I smile a friendly hello to you. You are the voice and the face of the ocean.

Once I came upon you sitting in the sand and dying. I did not intrude upon your death but stood by as a witness. I saw how you used your folded wings to keep you upright when you were getting wobbly. I saw your head lean to one side. And you took a long last look around you. You looked at the beach, at the sea and at the sky. And then you died. I shed a tear for you and knelt down to gently stroke your white head. And I discovered with surprise how very soft and warm you are.

But that wasn’t you who flew past me on a purple Friday at 4:40 p.m. As long as there are oceans, there will be seagulls. And as long as there are seagulls, I know life goes on.

Be free and strong!

Claudia
