This is the superb summit view over the Calder Valley. Ted Hughes was born in Mytholmroyd and spent the first seven or so years of his life here. He was a great boyhood adventurer, roaming the woodland and scouring the moors, playing, fishing and shooting with his brother Gerald before the family moved to Mexbrough. Ted Hughes described Scout Rock as providing "the curtain and back-drop to existence" I'm here to take part in the annual Ted Hughes Festival and have made the short climb up from the town to enjoy this view of the Calder Valley, in these hills and woods the young future poet laureate's love of the wild was formed and in turn informed some of the best poetry of the 20th. century.
This was Mytholmroyd, the start of my rail trip for 2015, covering lines in the north of England. I am using a Northern Trains rail rover - £59.00 for four days. My trip today was Mytholmroyd - Hebden Bridge - Blackburn - Clitheroe -Blackburn - Preston - Blackpool North - walk to Blackpool South - Preston - Lancaster - Morecambe.

Well this was a find on our recent visit to West Yorkshire. There wasn't much in the way of anything vegetarian to eat in Hebden Bridge bar the usual suspects and I came across this place during a random google search. Buses are quite frequent from Hebden and the bar is very popular so booking a table is strongly recommended for food. Some truly superb great tasting food with great prompt service with the dishes coming in timely succession. I would highly recommend this place if you are in this area.
Just the one beer on but it usually has two. White Rat from The Rat Brewery in Huddersfield was on with the Vocation beer off. The owner was equally annoyed with Vocation as the brewery is across the road but he was having supply problems as Vocation seem to be putting their efforts into supplying Morrisons, Tesco and Sainsburys nationally rather than looking after their customers in the same town.

The clubhouse at Moderna Way, home to Mytholmroyd Cricket Club, members of the Halifax League. Captured during a 90-run defeat by Premier Division rivals Triangle in a semi-final of the Parish Cup. After making a fairly slow start on a pretty small ground (44-0 after 15 overs, the first drinks break), Triangle went on to post a challenging total Royd never looked capable of overhauling. Triangle now meet Warley, seven-wicket victors against visitors Sowerby St Peter's, at Copley Cricket Club on August 5 in the final of the Halifax League's blue riband knockout competition.

This lock on the Rochdale canal is close to the hawk statue in Mytholmroyd which commemorates Ted Hughes in the town where he was born and spent the first seven years of his life.
The canal runs over thirty miles between Sowerby Bridge and Manchester and was opened in 1802. In its day it provided a major conduit for trade in Timber, wool, cotton, iron and coal, today it provides a leisure resource, its well looked-after and seems to be appreciated. As a young boy Ted Hughes fished in the canal, a passion that he maintained till the end of his days.
