An image from a distant past, a mélange of memories.

This artwork is based on a picture I drew as a kid in growing up in China some thirty years ago. I no longer have the picture, but I recreated it from memory with some embellishments including adding the different layers of mountains, which is the main technical spotlight of this creation. The light nougat sky and the coral sun are reminiscent of warm and hazy bygone times.

This night at Lake Matheson was incredible to say the least, the skies were clear all night with the odd wave of fog dancing through the flatlands in the distance. Cold crisp air, stunning stars and reflections like no other, Lake Matheson is a sight to behold under our Southern Stars.

Happened to see this mythical and unusual piece of artwork.

Landscape Study

"Some trudge across this wilderness bent and broken. Bent by their load of pain and fears. Broken by a life lost in a lonely struggle.

Some journey across the deserts and over the mountains simply seeking. They come knowing only what they desire. Sadly, they return empty and bitter. They could not accept what was gifted. Nor embrace what was shown.

Some float and glide across the vast expanse of silent emptiness. Their hearts coiled with doubts. The sighing winds merely cool. The searing sunrays always burn. The land absorbs their madness but they are unmoved by her shimmering nakedness. Untouched by her mystical language. Their eyes dulled with the coldness that seeps from their dying hearts. They move on wondering why they ever came.

And I know of some who walk through this shattered landscape kneeling ever so gently to stroke the ground that holds them up to the skies. They come with all their pains. And broken promises. They come with all their questions and elusive dreams. They come with what they are. And what they can never be. They come with loving in their hearts. And they know they have come home.

And to these journeymen Ladakh gives all that is hers." ~ prabir c purkayastha

I was exhausted, having ascended from 3,500 to 5,000 meters (camped at 4,800 meters), with altitude sickness pulsing behind my eyes. All I could concentrate on, was catching the light of this warm, glowing sunset as I stumbled and slipped over loose rocks and through this glacial stream. The colors are real ~ the mountains were golden, the hillside the color of wine, the rocks and stream green....an amazing, unexpected kaleidoscope of color in this barren land.

All critique welcome.

Another in this mini series of the beautiful sunset over Grainsby, Lincolnshire Wolds.

As the sunset progressed, it appeared as though a dragon like creature was flying through the sky above the tree line, to my eyes at least!

FAIRYS ANGEL

With autumn leaves falling near the earth

Plumbed down to the faires first

Eyes of golden reds and greens

The angels smiled, "Do you know what it means?"

Then mother earth smiled to her sister trees,

Will you hold the babies please?

The falling little leaves of eloquent sheen

Fell softly in between the tucked sheets so nice

The motherly trees all coverts with delights

The guiding faires with iridescent lights

Brightened up the spots so nice

The majestic trees, with motherly sight,

Open their arms so wide

Felt the little hearts tucked inside deep

The angels sleep till children's day

To see their paths along life's way

If you the inner child look clear to the sky

You will see faires fly by

The mythical winged horse meets the dark horse.

This is a variation of my Achiyalabopa image flic.kr/p/Y2ZNMA. Actually, it is how I planned and initially executed it.

I discovered this stunning structure, while scouting the place in the afternoon, set a marker on my GPS and named it Pegasus. It was immediately clear to me that I had to capture it with the dark horse of the Milky Way right on its shoulder.

It was my 6th night in a row doing nightscapes and I was very tired. I therefore only noticed while shooting at the next spot, that I had taken the whole sequence at f/2.8 instead of f/1.4. I immediately went back and captured the scene again, resulting in the Achiyalabopa image.

Because I still thought that the original composition was better, I checked what I could recover from the 2-stops underexposed RAWs. The advantage of the stopped down lens is that the stars are free of coma. What do you think of the result?

Lamego is an attractive town with Renaissance and baroque mansions overlooked by two hills. On one of the hills are the ruins of a 12th century castle, on the other is the monumental baroque Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. A marvelous granite staircase decorated with tiles, fountains, small chapels, and statues leads to a baroque church with views over the town. The Sanctuary is one of the most important pilgrim centres in Portugal. It is conformed by a 18th century church with twin towers and a marvelous blue and white plaster interior, with sky-blue rococó style ceiling and gilded altar; however, despite being a vastly beautiful church, it’s eclipsed by the monumental baroque church in zigzag in that accesses the church. Said stairs are conformed of 686 steps ornamented with tiles, urns, fountains, and statues. On one of the terraces are 18 statues. In the center is a monumental obelisk of 22 meters high supported by mythic images. Both the stairs and the church are visited year round, but especially during September 8th, since it is the main location of the festivity of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios; during which devotees climb the stairs to ask for miracles.

The famous baroque church if Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios stands atop the city of Lamego, north of Portugal. A marvelous granite staircase decorated with tiles, fountains, small chapels, and statues leads to the monumental obelisk and further to a baroque church with views over the town.

The medusa was a beautiful woman who was followed and raped by Poseidon in a temple to Athena. Athena was offended and cursed the medusa so her hair became snakes, her lower body a serpent and her gaze would turn all to stone. I depicted her as a sad and lonely victim rather than a monster. Perseus beheaded her with Athena putting the head on her shield. Beautifully though, the Pegasus was born from her severed neck which I like to think was her spirit.

The Ogopogo

This Canadian creature of folklore is an elusive, shy and polite water spirit. It has a head similar to an otter and a long serpent-like body. Along its body are found many flippers or fins that help propel it through the water. Its tail can create fierce storms and should you kill one then your descendants will be cursed to never die comfortably in bed. The Ogopogo can shapeshift into an old umbrella caught in a rope with a boot or other debris meant to create skeptics.

If you're interested, I have written a new post on my personal blog where I explore some of the impact of my surgery and how I am making my way through the healing process. Those of you who have known me for a while know that I like to write and that it helps me to make sense of my world. The feedback that I receive consistently from others is that it helps them too, as they are often in a place where they are feeling the same things but don't have the words to express them. Potential trigger warning.
