Was the dogma of the church insufficient to the creator of this graffiti, cut into the limestone of Ludham church? Perhaps it's an expression of boredom, through a tedious sermon? Or a calculated action evoking the folk-magic power of the pentagram? There is much debate on the intent and meanings of such Medieval scratchings. Some lean towards their use as apotropaic, seeking protection from a Medieval world populated by hordes of demons.
