Information on the subject:
I thought this was the most unusual thing I saw on the Alaskan cruise in the water. These two bodies of water were merging in the middle of the Alaskan gulf and there was a foam developing only at their junction.
I thought this was an example of a Halocline described on Wikipedia. A few people have commented that a Halocline is more of a horizontal phenomenon and this is more vertically oriented.
I am pretty confident that what you are seeing is a result of the melting glaciers being composed of fresh water and the ocean has a higher percentage of salt causing the two bodies of water to have different densities and therefore makes it more difficult to mix. I'm told they will eventually mix given enough time.
People have asked me if I just happened to look out over the edge of the ship deck and see this. Actually I had been on the deck for quite some time when I noticed what appeared to be a shadow cast by clouds over the ocean about 5 miles in front of the ship. As we approached the shadow I realized it was something different. I took many shots up to the point I shot this one, but never posted them until a year after this image went viral. I really posted them to convince people I did not Photoshop this image. See the other shots here.
Information on the photograph and high view count:
On January 20, 2011, this image was viewed 71,000 times in one day. That was more times than all my other photos, sets, collections, and photostream for the 18 months prior to that date and on that date this photo was not even registered as my most interesting according to Flickr. You can see them here in my other most interesting photos according to Flickr.
On September 20, 2011, this image went through another viral surge and was viewed 177,456 times that one day, almost 50% of the total number of views it had seen since I first posted it. The following day it only saw 98,285 views. And by the 3rd day it was back to it's prior daily view level of about 500-1000 views per day.
On September 22, 2011, I was asked by Yahoo News if they could use the photo on their images of the week pages. news.yahoo.com/photos/snapshots-week-of-june-3-1307133161...
If you want to read about this amazing high view count phenomenon see this link with the details.
The original site to start all the craziness was Tumblr and as of Jan 22, 2011, the number of comments on Tumblr alone was over 6,400. On March 7, 2011 Tumblr recorded 24,546 likes, comments, and rebloggs. As of Dec 23, 2011 16:00 the Tumblr notes were over 58,000 and climbing about 75 per minute.
The interestingness finally changed and on Jan 22, 2011 this photo was up to #23 in my photostream. As of February 13, 2011, it is up to #20. You can view all of them with a black background and they look much more impressive. As of February 12, 2011, it hit 100,000. On April 2 it hit 200,000 views with 352 favorites and 3 galleries.
In April 2012, the image reached 750,000 views and reached 1,000 favorites. On August 30, 2012 it hit 800,000 with 1,085 favorites and 10 gallery entries.
The AlaskaDispatch ran an article by Ben Anderson on February 5, 2013, discussing this phenomenon and linked back to this page referencing the large number of views it has seen. You can read Ben's article here.
On November 20, 2013, Hoax or Fact reported this was the 7th most viewed of the articles on their site www.hoaxorfact.com/Most-Read.html
In early December, in honor of the image crossing 1,000,000 views I created a Merging Oceans Facebook page just for fun. Technically the view count crossed 1 million on December 11, 2013, but a problem with Flickr view count froze all views that day and did not continue counting lifetime views until December 12. That afternoon it showed the 1 million view crossing. People have commented that Flickr changed the view count system a while ago and made views arbitrarily higher than in the past, not necessarily related to the actual views, but this image has seen a pretty constant run of views per day since it first went viral, long before the view count system change.

Image Filename Coincidence?
My Canon camera automatically names the images I shoot and advanced the numbers sequentially from 0000 to 9999. I find it quite interesting that this particular image is number 0666. I did not modify it.

Here is a Vertorama of Panther Falls... in Canada's Banff National Park.
Although Panther Falls is by no means the most spectacular waterfall that I've ever seen (Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwe/Zambian border takes some beating)... it is however the most spectacular waterfall that I've ever photographed.
The weather was lightly overcast when we arrived here shortly after noon... so we were basically shooting upwards into a dull white sky... far from ideal. But hey... when you've got a camera in your hand and you're facing a 66 meter high waterfall... you simply have to shoot it... regardless of the conditions. The spray at the bottom of the falls was also something that I've never had to deal with before... aim, click, wipe, aim, click, wipe... etc, etc. It was fun!
So... while I'd be the first to admit that this is not a fantastic photo... I've processed and posted it anyway... for Leon... Flickr's (unofficial) Waterfall King!
Panther Falls is actually quite a controversial waterfall... I found this rather interesting web-page while I was asking Google how high these falls were.
And I've posted this photo on a Thursday... go figure!? :)
Nikon D300, Sigma 18-200mm at 18mm, aperture of f3.5, with a 1/200th second exposure.

in preparing things for today's dinner, I found the recipe called for one egg, room temperature. so, I pulled out the egg, and seeking somewhere safe, thought to put it on the window sill, as it is out of the way of most anything else.
in doing so, I remembered the old myth that it is possible that one could stand an egg on end only on the days of the equinox, and how that wasn't really so; I thought I would give it a try, and also get my photo of the day done as well.
because, why wouldn't you?

Do you remember the saying that if you grasp a stinging nettle really hard and quickly, it doesn't hurt.
Absolute Tosh...
I grabbed this nettle hard, pulled it off its stem and held it up for a minute.
The pain wasn't too bad, but the tingling lasted for about three days...

The Baldness Epidemic
If you’re a man and you’re losing your hair, you likely have the male pattern baldness (MPB) type of androgenetic alopecia. Well over half of men will lose at least some of the hair in their lifetime, which could lead to low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, and even loss of sexual confidence. Unless you’re fond of wearing hats all of the time or have an attractive scalp worthy of a shaved head, this condition follows you everywhere you go and is noticed by everyone you see. You may not have to stare at that shiny sunspot on your head everyday, but your co-workers, girlfriends, and friends do. Laugh off the jokes if you can, but you’re stuck with this for the time being unless you make some major changes.
The Birth of the Bald
You probably know the early signs: receding hairline, thinning crown, and if left too long, the dreaded horseshoe around your ears and back of your head. You may have had a full head of hair in your 20’s (or not, some people start thinning as early as their teens!), but your baldness was always predestined. As with most things, blame your genes. In this case, it’s the genes controlling sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) a derivative of testosterone. For afflicted men, DHT attacks the follicles in certain areas such as the forehead and crown, impacting their ability to absorb nutrients and shortening the growth phase of follicles. At first, the follicle may grow fine, colorless hair, and then no hair at all. Oddly enough, the follicles in the horseshoe area are not impacted by DHT.
It is still commonly believed that male pattern baldness is passed down from the mother. While this may be partially true, as one of the genes increasing the risk for baldness is located on your X chromosome, there are other genes at play that can come from both sides. Genetics is anything but simple.
Grading Male Pattern Balding
The earlier you start a treatment for baldness, the better your outcome will be. As such, it’s important to make sure you grade your baldness properly to see where you fall on the baldness scale. The standard grading system for male pattern baldness is called the Norwood Classification scale and rates baldness from 1 (minimal to no hair loss) to 7 (horseshoe coverage only or less).
Knowing your grade will help you determine what treatments would be appropriate for you, and you may be asked to inform your doctors by phone of your grade prior to initial appointments. It is also important to ask how successful any hair loss professional has been with your particular degree of hair loss.
Male Pattern Baldness Mythbusting 101
As with many pervasive conditions that do not yet have a complete cure, myths about the cause and treatment of baldness are everywhere. If you’re worried that sexual activity (or lack thereof), sun exposure, hair products like shampoo or gel, or wearing a hat are causing your hair problems, don’t. There’s no consistent research that these choices have an impact. And, for the most part, your diet doesn’t have an effect either. Save yourself some time, energy, and money and make sure you’re getting the right information from a qualified professional.
Hair Loss Treatment Options
There are a few effective hair loss options out there, and how effective they are for you depends on your degree of hair loss. In general, you have two choices for managing your hair loss: conceal or replace. If you’re further along toward a full horseshoe, a full hair restoration system (i.e. a wig or toupee) may be your only option. Early in the hair loss trajectory you may get great results from hair fibers (a concealment solution), minoxidil (Rogaine®) or topical ketocanazole.
When you’re in the middle of the hair loss spectrum, more expensive and invasive treatments may be necessary. Finasteride (Proscar®, Propecia®) and dutasteride (Avodart ®) are medications that reduce levels of DHT, but must be taken daily and you may experience side effects. Hair replacement surgery should be your last option due to the cost, risk, and overall inconvenience. An alternative treatment you can consider at this stage is Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP). In PRP, platelets and growth factor proteins are extracted from a patient’s blood and injected into the scalp to promote increased blood flow, hair growth, and healing.
Whatever you choose, stay safe and good luck!

2010 Advent Series Branding
Goal: This will be a three part series examining common misconceptions about Christmas in search of a Biblical understanding of its significance.
Audience: Our Junior and Senior High Youth ministry, including students in grades 6-12 in rural Indiana.
Direction: Our goal is to capture the mythbusting vibe of the TV series while not simply co-opting their artwork or branding.
Project: This particular incarnation of the theme will be the title slide for our series as well as used online for promotion.
Other important info:
This is a Christmas-themed reprise of one of the more popular series our youth ministry has done.
As always, any feedback would be much appreciated.
