A macro view of a dowel screw from a pair of eye glasses sitting atop a metal ruler, taken for the Macro Mondays group theme, "My Closest." The screw measures 5mm in length.

 

The hardest part of this shoot was getting that tiny screw to stay put on the ruler where I wanted it (I won't get into the time I dropped it on my carpet floor and the adventure that ensued trying to find it!).

 

Strobist/technical info:

The scene was illuminated by two LEDs and two Nikon SB900 speedlights. The two SB900s were placed at 9- and 3-o'clock, one-foot above and three-feet away from the screw. They were fired in Manual mode @ 1⁄16 power through Neewer 24" x 24" soft boxes. A white Led light panel was placed at 12-o'clock and the blue LED of a Coast TX10 Quad Color flashlight was placed overhead (for the blue highlights and background). Both were exposed for 1/10 s.

 

The SB900s were triggered by three PocketWizard Plus X flash triggers.

 

Lens: Vega 11U 50mm f2.8 attached to a bellows extended 123mm.

So interesting to see how many different colors surfaced when drilling down into this piece of rock. To the naked eye it appeared to be white on the edge and dark purple in the middle. What a fun challenge to take this closer look!

The Macro Mondays theme for 1/17 is “my closest” and we were tasked with photographing a subject of our choice, with a ruler, graph, grid to show how close in we were. I opted for a clip-on lens on my phone’s camera. In this one the slider for the lens is not all the way to the right but about half to 2/3rds, I think. The tick marks behind the knot are millimeters. Took tons of pictures to get one or two that I liked.

The establishing shot to show where the camera was focused should be next in the photostream. I’ll also post it in the first comment box when next I’m on my laptop.

One can say that I am small, very small! I’m just a little Teddy Bear after all! But how can you measure the size of my love?

 

I read somewhere that the true measure of love is love without measure. I guess that it’s an answer I can live with. How about you?

One of my attempts at the "Macro Mondays" theme "My Closest" with 3cm/1.18 inches horizontal width approx. The challenge involved moving as close as possible and including a visible indication of size by placing the subject on/by a ruler, grid or graph paper.

 

In January 2022, I asked for help, and a Flickr support hero removed both of my accounts from the Explore algorithm. I feel more relaxed and in the moment. I’m grateful to SmugMug for saving Flickr, and I have nothing against Explore; it just is not for me during this pandemic.

A crisp 2009A U.S. $100 Bill taken with a Nikon D5500, Tamron 16-300mm at 86mm and 3 extension tubes: 12, 20, 36.

The photo measures 1 3/16 inch (3cm) wide and 7/8 inch (2cm) high including the ruler.

 

There are a number of anti-counterfeit measures, one of which is the change in color of the numerals "100" from copper/gold to green depending on the angle held.

 

Below the Serial Number is a continuous string of "100USA" that begin upside down and curves around a white oval space which when held up to the light reveals the face of Benjamin Franklin. The "100USA" eventually turns right side up as can be seen to the right of the "B."

 

The words in the background were taken from the Declaration of Independence. Very interesting and curious that the latter part of the phrasing in the following passage appears above the "100."....out of all the other sentences in the document!

"That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government.."

 

Due to the financial crisis of 2007-2008, the 2009 Series A Bill didn't go into circulation until 2013.

Shoot for MM. I used CZJ Tessar 50mm with a bunch of focusing helicoids. This one is SOOC JPEG, no crop, sharpening, additional contrast or any other in camera or post-processing modifications applied.

 

This is supposed to be around 3.5:1 macro.

Ferrite core memory from an IBM 360 main frame computer for the Macro Monday's group, challenge: My Closest. The markings on the wooden rule are 1mm. Two large markings are 1cm. Closest without a crop.

Based on all of the cool images I have seen posted for this week's challenge, I'm afraid I took the challenge far too literally and didn't even think about how to meet the challenge artistically like so many of you did. Way to go! Some really cool macros this week!

Usually you see the compound branch that is given as a flower.

In this shot i used 50mm F1.8 and macro tube 36 mm, I prefer not to exceed this magnification to avoid shooting problems.

No crops used.

I did try this will bellows - a much closer-up look but lost patience with the lighting and reflections from the ruler! (Damn ruler!!!).

As the script marks this week, it is about getting as close as possible to the subject to be photographed, including a scale in the image to be able to determine the size. In this case, I have included the scale based on the photo and although it is not numbered (except for the number 2 that appears) I assure you that each mark corresponds to a millimeter. So I hope you like my proposal for this occasion.

An abstract self portrait in a marble rolled in a 5x5mm graph paper.

Getting as close as I possibly can on a circuit board, harvested from a remote-controlled power outlet whose remote went belly-up, capturing examples of tiny surface-mount devices, possibly resistors. The ruler scale at the bottom is in millimeters.

 

Taken with the Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens at 5X magnification. At that setting, the lens has to be less than an inch (25.4mm) from the subject, making lighting difficult. The lens and camera were attached to a macro focusing rail, a necessary but very finicky device (more so at extreme magnification) used to move the camera fore and aft to focus. Given my sometimes uncooperative set of hands I have, it was a challenge, indeed.
