My Closest for "Macro Mondays

Minuscule perle sur règle de couture

"Macro Mondays" and "My Closest"

I was trying to just get the NUM from E PLURIBUS UNUM on a penny but to get the marks of the rule in that was as close as I go, I need a smaller ruler, 5mm wide, 3/16 inch.

Macro Mondays theme My Closest

Having spent an unreasonable amount of time and effort trying to obtain an acceptable end result, there was no way of giving up or going back - hence the title.

Happy Macro Monday! 😄

For Macro Mondays theme; "My Closest". HMM!

A tiny threaded bobbin sits on a metal ruler.

A colorful transistor... 1.5 cm left to right... difficult to sharpen the focus but... fun :-)

sun worship, veneration of the sun or a representation of the sun as a deity, as in Atonism in Egypt in the 14th century bce. Although sun worship has been used frequently as a term for “pagan” religion, it is, in fact, relatively rare. ... Kings ruled by the power of the sun and claimed descent from the sun.

One of my attempts at the "Macro Mondays" theme "My Closest"

This is a tiny part of a leaf! You can see the mm scale in the background! The whole image shows a part of 2.5 mm, so it should be around 15:1 magnification…

Peter Whitfield inspired me to look for a couple of additional - perhaps slightly more interesting - leaves in the (somewhat barren) winter environment outside! So this is one of them!

Macro Mondays 'my closest' theme.

Any subject but as close as possible and with the measuring tape/ruler visible in the image.

Shot with a macro lens and then cropped.

This image measures 16mm in width

An old Chinese ruler with units of measurement called ‘cun’. Ten ‘cun’ equals one ‘chi’. The ‘cun’ is in turn subdivided into 10 units, and shown here. A ‘cun’ is equal to about 3.3cm. The width of the flower ( Tulbaghia violacea, aka Society Garlic) is around 4/10 of a ‘cun’ (ie approx 1.3 cm or 1/2”). See comments for a larger view

This was as close as I could get with this 2x magnification lens without the object or the scale getting completely unrecognizable (at least with the composition I chose here) ...

Happy Macro Monday!

Lacy Christening Bonboniere closeup showing 1cm measure. To celebrate all the various birthdays in January from children, cousins, children's friends etc. January consists of baking days and brirthdays. HMM:))

The measuring scale here is from an Improved Neubauer engraved microscope slide, with each division being 0.05mm. That makes the overall frame about 0.4 x 0.7mm.

Second attempt at this week's extreme macro challenge; this time, using a Nikon Optiphot microscope, 10x phase contrast lens and 10x viewfinder lens - quite a tough set up for an artistic composition. The first attempt missed off the measuring scale due to a combination of extreme magnification and forgetfulness on my part.

The green stuff is the tip of a sprig of moss, the small specks are dust and dirt and the silvery balls are air bubbles which make the image more visually appealing (not good from a scientific/microscopy point of view though).

In PP, I have focus-stacked 17 images, all at about 5 micron depth intervals, and tweaked the levels to brighten the colours and grid pattern.

The other day my son showed me an action figure he modeled and 3D printed with one of his new printers. It's pretty small and rather detailed so I thought I would shoot it for this week's theme. Now I have to admit that I could have gotten closer but then you wouldn't be able to see the full figure. To get around this, as I'm often prone to do, I shot the full figure along with my engineering rule which shows 10 divisions to the inch, the height of the figure is app. 1.5 in. tall with the base.

Now for the good part. If you really want to appreciate the resolving power of the Nikon 55mm f/2.8 NIKKOR Micro you can crop the image the way you want to, all you have to do is view large, very large. Scan over the base, what you see are the printing steps, 50 µm or 0.002 in. steps, now scan over the figure, the print was even finer at 34 µm or 0.0013 in. and again, the steps can be seen.
