The Farewell (1878)

Artist: Harriet Backer

Throughout Harriet Backer's 50-year career, women's rights changed radically. Being a woman and an artist became accepted. Backer was talented and determined, inspiring a new generation of women and men in the Norwegian art world.

In Backer’s family, art and culture were part of how the children were raised. Her older sister Agathe was musically gifted and wanted to become a pianist. She had to go abroad to learn, and Harriet became her sister's traveling companion. This gave Harriet the opportunity to visit art museums and get to know the historical masters of the art world at a young age. Agathe eventually became a renowned composer and concert pianist, while Harriet became an important artist.

Backer showed an early talent and interest in art, but embarked on full-time studies rather late in life. In 1874, at 29 years, she decided to travel to Munich. The art community in Norway was small, so one had to go abroad.

The art academies in Europe were reserved for men in those days, but women could receive private tuition or attend "women's classes". During her years in Munich, Backer had several teachers. In 1878 she moved to Paris to continue her studies.

Being accepted for exhibition at the Salon in Paris was an important step on the path to becoming a professional artist. In 1880, Backer was accepted with the painting Solitude. Hundreds of artists exhibited at these exhibitions at the same time, and the paintings hung close together, from floor to ceiling. The jury thought Backer's painting was excellent, and she was honoured with a diploma, known as a Mention honorable.

In Munich, Backer learned to paint in a style characterised by a high level of detail and dark colours. We see this for example in Avskjeden (The Farewell), from 1878. When she came to Paris, she was greatly inspired by impressionism. In one of her best-known paintings, Blått interiør (Blue Interior), painted five years after Avskjeden, the transformation of her painting style is evident. Clear and pure colours dominate the composition. From this point on, the interaction between figure, interior and light effects became a theme that permeated Backer's paintings. How to create contrasts between the light indoors and outdoors? How are colours perceived in lamplight compared to daylight? She approached her subjects with these issues in mind.

Backer started her career with a desire to become a portrait painter. She painted many friends and acquaintances, and also received portrait commissions. But it is her interior scenes she has become best known for. She painted interiors from all walks of life – from farmhouses to bourgeois living rooms. For the most part, Backer's rooms are populated by women.

I think I serve the cause of women best by concentrating like a man – Harriet Backer

In 1888, Backer established herself in Norway, and from 1892 to 1910 ran a painting school in Kristiania. She became a popular teacher. Her openness to new ideas in both art and social development was appreciated. She sympathised with the women's movement, but did not actively participate in political work.

In the women's cause, Backer was recognised more for what she did than what she said – as a renowned artist she was an important role model. Together with friend and fellow artist Kitty Kielland, she was a pioneer who paved the way for women to have the opportunity to choose art as a career path.

On 11 June 2022 the new National Museum opened in Oslo. This is the largest museum in the Nordics. The new museum now consists of the collections of the former National Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Norwegian Museum of Decorative Arts and Design.

The new museum has a permanent exhibition of about 6 500 objects. Design, arts and crafts, fine art as well as contemporary art will be exhibited alongside each other. As such, the permanent exhibition highlights interesting connections between different collections that previously have been on show at three different museums. Additionally, audiences will be able to see the most famous paintings by the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch, including The Scream (1893) and Madonna (1894).

The building was designed by Kleihues + Schuwerk Gesellschaft von Architekten, with emphasis on dignity and longevity over sensationalist architecture. Great care was given to achieve a balance with the museum’s surroundings and the existing monuments in the area, such as Oslo City Hall and Akershus Fortress.

The most eye-catching feature of the new museum is the large, illuminated exhibition hall on top of the building. It will be used for temporary exhibitions.

The rooftop terrace offers a unique view of the inner Oslo fjord. The square in front of the main entrance has become an urban meeting place, with benches and a café that invites you in to take a rest.

Imogen Heap - Speeding Cars

Here's the day you hoped would never come

Don’t feed me violence, just run with me

Through rows of speeding cars

The paper cuts, the cheating lovers

The coffee’s never strong enough

I know you think it’s more than just bad luck

There, there, baby

It’s just text book stuff

It’s in the ABC of growing up

The multi-awarded Mandaluyong Childrens Choir under the baton of maestro Sebastian L. Trinidad.

The Mandaluyong Children’s Choir was formed in 1999 as a training program that aims to develop and nurture the musically gifted among the underprivileged in Mandaluyong City, and since then, it has become a spring of hope and pride for the town folks with its talented trove of 8 to 17 year old boys and girls, most of which are sourced from public schools. MCC has drawn a proud list of achievements. Topping the roster is representing the Philippines and winning a silver medal in the Children's Choir Category and a bronze medal in Musica Contemporanea Category in the 2nd World Choir Olympics in

Busan, South Korea. Only Selfless Love, a music video which featured the young choir internationalists, was adjudged Best MTV in the 2002 Catholic Mass Media Awards and later became a finalist at the prestigious 2004 New York Festival. This feat was reprised in 2007, when their MTV, the Power to Unite, again, won the Best MTV award in the 2007 Catholic Mass Media

Awards. Part of their First North American Tour, they became the first Filipino choir to win at the International Choral Kathaumixw in Powell River, British Columbia, Canada. In 2005, the choir had the chance to represent the Philippines in the 2005 World Children’s Choir Festival in China.

To date, they have independently produced seven albums: Unang Hirit (2000), Angelic Christmas (2000), Angeli Domini (2002), Symphony of Earth Angels (2002), Childhood (2004), Haleluya!: The Asian Soundscape (2005) and Pasko Sa Langit (2005). The Earth Angels had appeared in Concert Seasons of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra and have had engagements with

the Manila Symphony Orchestra II and the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra.

Specializing in the innovations in Contemporary Choir Music, the MCC continues to research for breakthroughs of Asian composers as well as its Western counterparts. Materials collected and commissioned find its way into the adventurous programming of the choir.

"This is a Man's World" - by James Brown

Runnin' low on inspiration - but listenin' to this fits my mood pretty well tonight.. This morning, a guy I work with got a call telling him to come to the hospital - that his younger brother who had checked in with pneumonia was dying of a staff infection.. He was 7 years younger than me - in great shape - a runner - and as I write this, he is probably already dead.

Something like that always makes me think about the things I have that I truly give a damn about - and they are pretty much all around family and friends. But in the end, it's my wife that I think about the most.. She's the one I do this for - this 'life'.. She's the reason I get up in the morning, and the reason I go to bed at night. I used to think when it came to dying, I wanted to go first, so that I wouldn't have to go on without her. But the more I think about it, the more cowardly that seems to me. I would definitely want to be there for her always - and that includes taking care of her in the end. Definitely.

This is a man's world, this is a man's world

But it wouldn't be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl

You see, man made the cars to take us over the road

Man made the trains to carry heavy loads

Man made electric light to take us out of the dark

Man made the boat for the water, like Noah made the ark

This is a man's, a man's, a man's world

But it wouldn't be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl

Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do

Wow!!!

The day started musically, with refreshing water sound play, as the basics of Music.

Shape Hopscotch: an educative way to improve on their fine motor skills, gave a wonderful learning experience.

Wall number game for numeracy was also exciting.

To enhance their literacy skills, they sorted out phonics by sending phonic mails.

Archeologist!! Archeology!!

Yes… at White Fields Nursery, archeologists were busy digging up old remains of dinosaurs and insects.

Kids enjoyed Water play, during which they had to search for the sea animals in their own little sea.

They enjoyed the ring game and painting activities, and also had a great time learning about number 4 and counting with pom poms.

During outdoor game, kids played a "hit the target" game.

The day ended with a balloon tennis game.

A day to explore and to enjoy…

I took these photos while wandering aimlessly around San Marco Piazza in Venice during the Carnevale in February 2010. It was quite an experience - all these costumed characters milling about waiting to be photographed by throngs of paparazzi. I lucked out by doing a lot of one-on-one shooting with the costumed people. I'd love to get back there next year to try new things and check out the new costumes!

we busted out of class had to get away from those fools

we learned more from a three-minute record than we ever learned in school

tonight I heart the neighborhood drummer sound

i can feel my heart begin to pound

you say you're tired and you just want to close your eyes and follow your dreams down

we made a promise we swore wed always remember

no retreat, believe me, no surrender

like soldiers in the winters night with a vow to defend

no retreat, believe me, no surrender

now young faces grow sad and old and hearts of fire grow cold

we swore blood brothers against the wind

i'm ready to grow young again

and hear your sisters voice calling us home across the open yards

believin' we could cut someplace of our own

with these drums and these guitars

we made a promise we swore wed always remember

no retreat, believe me, no surrender

blood brothers in the stormy night with a vow to defend

no retreat, believe me, no surrender

now on the street tonight the lights grow dim

the walls of my room are closing in

but it's good to see your smiling face and to hear your voice again

we could sleep in the twilight by the river side

with a wide open country in our hearts

and these romanics dreams in our heads

we made a promise...

Roxy Music are an English art rock group formed in 1971 by Bryan Ferry, who became the group's lead vocalist and chief songwriter. The other members are Phil Manzanera (guitar), Andy Mackay (saxophone and oboe) and Paul Thompson (drums and percussion). Former members include Brian Eno (synthesizer and "treatments"), and Eddie Jobson (synthesizer and violin). Although the band took a break from group activities in 1983, they reunited for a concert tour in 2001, and have toured together intermittently since that time.

Roxy Music attained popular and critical success in the UK, Europe and Australia during the 1970s and early 1980s, beginning with their debut album, Roxy Music (1972).[1] The band was highly influential, as leading proponents of the more experimental, musically sophisticated element of glam, as well as a significant influence on early English punk music. They also provided a model for many New Wave acts and the experimental electronic groups of the early 1980s. The group is distinguished by their visual and musical sophistication and their preoccupation with style and glamour.[2] Ferry and co-founding member Eno have also had influential solo careers, the latter becoming one of the most significant record producers and collaborators of the late 20th century.

Rolling Stone magazine ranked Roxy Music #98 on its "The Immortals – 100 The Greatest Artists of All Time" list.[3]

A new studio album, which would have been their ninth, began recording in 2005. It would have been Roxy's first record with Brian Eno since 1973, who wrote two songs for it as well as played keyboards.[4] However, Bryan Ferry eventually confirmed that material from these sessions would be released as a Ferry solo album, with Eno playing on "a couple of tracks,"[5] and that he doesn't think they'll record as Roxy Music again.[6] Subsequently, this was confirmed by the announcement of a solo Bryan Ferry album, entitled Olympia.

They have a number of notable floats including the Dolly Trolley, the horse-drawn bus that was used in the opening of Hello Dolly with Barbra Streisand, the Smoking Mary which is a six unit float that looks like a steam locomotive, a Trojan horse and the Orpheus Leviathan Float, which is a three unit, 139-foot float, and the first Carnival float to use extensive fiber optic lighting.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Fats Domino wass the honorary grand marshall for 2014. His eldest son, Antoine Domino III, rode in the parade and perform his 85 year old father's music.

In addition to Fats Domino, Quentin Tarantino reigned as the krewe's celebrity monarch.

Although musically inept, I love walking past this shop every morning, the rainbow of colours cheers me up no end, and sets me up for the rest of the day.

I just got back from another road trip. Last week we drove down to San Antonio, TX, with stops in Hot Springs, AR and Fort Worth, TX along the way. I took this photo while gassing up the car at "Willie's Place" at Carl's Corner, TX (a must-stop for any true road-tripper, let alone a Willie Nelson fan)... I have over 500 photos to sort through from the trip, so it will take some time. I also hope to get the chance to catch up on everyone else's photos.

... and had I only known I was going to stop here this year, I would have saved Willie's "On The Road Again" for this photo in my Musically Inspired set... but the "Highwayman" is just as good, especially for another tribute to Willie....

The Highwaymen - #41/52 for Musically Inspired set

"I was a highwayman .

Along the coachroads I did ride,

With sword and pistol by my side.

Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade.

Many a soldier shed his life blood on my blade.

The bastards hung me in the spring of '25,

But I am still alive..."

Musically Challenged:

'I rode a tank,

Held a generals rank'

Sympathy for the Devil- Rolling Stones

My very kind husband helped come up with the idea for this one, so a big thank you to him!

For Musically Challenged, Pearl Jam's Black. The album Ten takes me back to adolescence, preteen angst, and a boy I had a crush on back then. I can still remember the day I bought this album (I also added STP's Purple and Veruca Salt's American Thighs to my music repertoire that day). There is so much emotion in this song, it gives me chills even after all these years.

Not too much effort into today's shot. Soup, muffin-baking, and snuggling are on my agenda. A far cry from those insecure days of junior high.
