At a Tashlikh celebration on Venice Beach. Tashlikh is a Jewish tradition (part of Rosh Hashana--the Jewish New Year) in which Jews cast their sins away in the form of throwing bread into the ocean. The celebration was very musical--it was, essentially, a massive drum circle.

The Amplifier takes a signal from instruments such as a guitar, bass gultar or keyboard which then passes through loudspeakers to emerge with a greatly increased volume. They were first used by electric guitars in the 1930s. Combination ("combo") amplifiers include a preamplifier, a power amplifier, tone controls, and one or more speakers in a cabinet.
This is a Fender Twin amp, which was introduced in 1952.
The clavichord is a triple fretted "King of Sweden" clavichord. Tuning is in 1/4-comma meantone and at a pitch of A=440.

The Cajinto is an instrument developed by the German company Schlagwerk to combine the sounds of a Cajun and a Quinto (A Cuban conga drum).
This version was developed with the percussionist Roland Peil. It has a beachwood playing surface and an alder body.
Cajintos are assigned the number 111.24 in the Hornbostel Sachs classification of musical instruments indicating:
1 = Idiophones. Sound is primarily produced by the actual body of the instrument vibrating, rather than a string, membrane, or column of air.
11 = Struck Idiophones. These idiophones are set in vibration by being struck.
111 = Directly Struck Idiophones. The player himself executes the movement of striking; whether by mechanical intermediate devices, beaters, keyboards, or by pulling ropes, etc.
111.2 = Percussive idiophones. The instrument is struck either with a non-sonorous object (hand, stick, striker) or against a non-sonorous object (human body, the ground).
111.24 = Percussion vessels.

This new Noise Breaking Machine has replace Martin Green's Sporkatron, with wires instead of spoons and forks.
The device has the same function as a Keyboard Controller transmitting MIDI data to to a laptop. In the last couple of decades Softsynths or computer programmes on a laptop have largely replaced hardware (dedicated) synthesizers whiich have the custom software built-in. When the musician touches the cutlery the conductivity of the human body makes a connection to trigger samples on the computer.
Laptop Controllers / Synthesizers are assigned the number 5 in the Hornbostel Sachs classification of musical instruments indicating:
5 = Electrophones. Sound is generated by electrical means.

It's a dog. Eating from a metal bowl and then fighting with the blankets, he sounds like this.
If you're in NYC and you'd like to meet this or other instruments-of-the-day, check this out.
I'm going to continue with the instrument building, one a week for as long as I can stand it. If you wanna keep up with the noise, bookmark or subscribe to my homepage. Thanks for putting up with the cacophony!

The Virginal or Virginals (the plural does not necessarily denote more than one instrument) is part of Harpsichord family. This is the name for the instrument in England. In Italy and France it is called a Spinet (or Epinette). In England from the end of 17th century the term Spinet came to be used only for instruments with the strings are at a 90 degree angle to the keyboard. The Virginal was popular in Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries, and was pentagonal or heptagonal, as well as rectangular shaped. It has the same mechanism as a Harpsichord (wire strings are plucked by plectra mounted in jacks), but only one string per note running more or less parallel to the keyboard on the long side of the case. Many, if not most, of the instruments were constructed without legs, and would be placed on a table for playing.
This instrument was made by John Loosemore of Exeter in 1655. It is rectangular in shape, and the inner surfaces of the coffered lid and drop-front contain naive decorative paintings, with scenes of a stag-hunt, shipping, Adam and Eve, and various birds.
Virginals/Italian Spinets are assigned the number 314.122-6-8 in the Hornbostel-Sachs classification of musical instruments ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hornbostel-Sachs ), indicating:
3 = Chordophone. Instruments where the sound is primarily produced by the vibration of a string or strings that are stretched between fixed points.
31 = Simple Chordophones. Instruments which are in essence simply a string or strings and a string bearer
314 = Board Zither. Instrument uses a string bearer that is shaped like a board, or is the ground.
314.1 = Instrument with strings parallel to the string bearer.
314.12 = Instrument has a resonator.
314.122 = Box Zither. Instrument has a resonator made from slats.
314.122-6-8 = Strings are caused to vibrate by plectrum and keyboard.
