Harlem Boys and Girls Club (aka Harlem Children's Center) (35-45 W. 133rd St.) - music- print by Paul Parker

Another look at the Thaischool kids learning to play traditional Thai music, using traditional Thai musical instruments. And all under the watchful eye of the scores of sitting Buddha images in the Pha Rabiang pavilion of 400 Buddhas in the Wat Pho temple complex in Bangkok. The cacophony with several musical instruments going on simultaneously was in fact pretty pleasing to the ear. May Buddha bless these lovely kids and may they keep at their art for long, and not succumb to Thai rock and rock and roll and hip hop which most kids seem to fancy more of, nowadays! Well, you cannot stop them listening to that sort of music anyway (admittedly I like that kind of music too!), but the kids will hopefully not abandon their traditional music and arts once they grow up. (Bangkok, Thailand, Oct. 2018)

It was lucky I Sunday here in when Phra Rabiang, the pavilion with around 400 Buddha images in the Wat Pho temple complex! Several batches of Thai school children were being taught several aspects of Thai fine arts, music, painting and sance. This sighting is the second of such educational programmes that were ongoing at Wat Pho that day. Here, Thai kids are learning to play traditional Thai music, using traditional Thai musical instruments. The cacophony with several musical instruments going on simultaneously was in fact pretty pleasing to the ear. Pleasant and refreshing though it was, the cynic in me was wondering how much longer these little kids will do this before abandoning all of this for hip hop and rock and roll and acid rock like kids do all over the world. Food for thought! (Bangkok, Thailand, Oct. 2018)

Turning out great! Just a few more things to do before I start the background. Need to get this finished since I have a pet portrait to do in the next few weeks also.

Just this once, since we had to drop her off late, did we get to see what goes on in the afternoon.

The local gendarmes were delighted to be photographed.

Collin has been teaching piano at Brookdale Music since 2009, and welcomes students ages 9 – 18. Since he is a jazz pianist, Collin would be an excellent teacher if your student is playing in a middle school or high school jazz program. He also specializes in blues and pop music.Collin graduated from Northern Illinois University (NIU) with a Bachelors Degree in Music Performance on Piano, with an emphasis in Jazz Studies. Collin served as the Piano Chair in the NIU Jazz Ensemble, NIU New Music Ensemble and NIU Jazz Combo. He was the recipient of multiple music scholarships.

Wandering up to Brisbane Square, as I often do most lunch hours, I came across these gentlemen with what appeared to be an end blown flute. Having dabbled with Irish penny whistles and an original school fife (circa 1970), curiosity got the better of me and I was politely informed that the instrument is a Turkish ney. Kindly consenting to be photographed during their music lesson I learned that the gentleman on the right was responsible for both crafting the instrument and was also providing his pupil (on the left) with instruction on its use. From what I could hear of the sound it reminded me of the lower range of notes my daughter produces on her traditional flute, low, haunting, but beautifully melodic.

Can anything beat the thrill of hearing music you have composed being played? One of the great advantages of studying music is that you are always learning something new. Brookdale Music's newest private instructor, Carol Hoepe, is an experienced composer and is now available at Brookdale Music to guide students with their music compositions.

Ms. Hoepe has a Master's degree in music composition and a minor in piano from the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, where her primary composition teacher was Stella Roberts. Stella in turn studied with one of the world's most famous music teachers, Nadia Boulanger, who also taught Aaron Copland, Daniel Barenboim, and Burt Bacherach, among hundreds of others.

Ms. Hoepe's prior students have won many top prizes up to and including the national level. Her students enter their pieces primarily in three venues:

•The Illinois State Music Teachers Association (ISMTA), affiliated with the Music Teachers National Association's composition competition,

•The Illinois Music Educators Association (IMEA) annual composition contest, and

•The Music Institute of Chicago composition contest.

Ms. Hoepe will be teaching at Brookdale Music beginning in September.

This caught my eye because it looks so odd - no manipulation whatsoever (apart from a crop just to make it look even odder)
