I semi torrefatti del guaranà sono la matrice vegetale a più elevato contenuto di caffeina conosciuta (fino a 5 volte quella del caffè). Tem sido observado no Brasil o uso abusivo de suplementos alimentares para fim ergogênico (para melhorar o desempenho do esportista) e estético. Esta atitude tem crescido nos ambientes de prática de exercício, tendendo à generalização em algumas academias de ginástica e associações esportivas (1).
A situação, em parte, decorre da falta de conhecimento de que uma alimentação balanceada e de qualidade, a não ser em situações especiais, atende às necessidades nutricionais de um praticante de exercícios físicos, o que dispensaria o uso de suplementos alimentares (1).
Porém, a realização de suplementação vitamínica em atletas e esportistas ainda é tema controverso e de grande discussão na literatura médica. Uma das razões para tal controvérsia relaciona-se a estudos que demonstram o aumento da produção de radicais livres de oxigênio durante exercício físico promovendo o aparecimento do estresse oxidativo (2).
Os micronutrientes (vitaminas, minerais e oligoelementos) desempenham papel importante na proteção dos tecidos corporais em relação ao estresse oxidativo. Além disso, são fundamentais na produção de energia, síntese de hemoglobina, manutenção da saúde óssea e função imunológica. De um modo geral, os micronutrientes presentes em dietas balanceadas e diversificadas em alimentos, com aporte calórico suficiente para atender a demanda energética, são suficientes para as necessidades do esportista (2,3). Na realidade nada é capaz de substituir as vitaminas, minerais, fibras e outros nutrientes existentes em uma alimentação balanceada. Porém, nossos hábitos alimentares e estilos de vida somados ao baixo teor de nutrientes de alguns alimentos em função dos processos de cultivo e produção, cozimento, armazenamento e transporte, podem fazer com que a alimentação não forneça todos os nutrientes necessários ao organismo.
A Associação Dietética Americana (ADA) recomenda a suplementação em algumas situações especiais, como o uso de ácido fólico em gestantes, cálcio na vigência de osteoporose e osteopenia, ferro para anemia e para indivíduos que não possuem uma alimentação adequada em calorias e variada em alimentos. Para atletas, a mesma instituição orienta que a suplementação pode ser utilizada quando o esportista estiver em fase de emagrecimento, apresentar a necessidade de retirar algum alimento ou grupo alimentar da dieta, doença ou deficiência de determinado micronutriente. Alguns trabalhos, que avaliaram atletas em regime de treinamento intenso, sugerem o consumo de vitamina C e vitamina E entre 500 e 1.500 mg/dia, para melhor resposta imunológica e antioxidante. No entanto, essa informação está baseada em baixo grau de evidência científica. De qualquer maneira, nenhuma suplementação pode ser consumida sem a avaliação do médico ou nutricionista, para que não haja prejuízo para a saúde humana (1).
Os benefícios e prejuízos à saúde podem ser observados, por exemplo, no betacaroteno, precursor da vitamina A, que é o mais eficiente bloqueador de
oxigênio singlet (a forma mais reativa de oxigênio). Segundo a DRI (Dietary Reference Intakes), a dose diária recomendada é de no máximo 3000 μg/dia de retinol (unidade de atividade da vitamina A) para homens e mulheres adultos. Entretanto, o betacaroteno pode apresentar ação pró-oxidante, por meio da interação com outro antioxidante, como a vitamina E, ou ainda interferindo no metabolismo da glutationa e de outras enzimas antioxidantes. Alguns autores sugerem que, para alcançar um efeito quimiopreventivo evitando a oxidação do betacaroteno, são necessárias quantidades adequadas de vitamina C e E. O consumo de doses maiores coloca em risco a saúde pela alta toxicidade e por favorecer o aparecimento de anorexia, hipercalcemia, lesão hepática e renal (2,3).
O zinco está envolvido no processo de respiração celular e sua deficiência em atletas pode gerar anorexia, perda de peso, fadiga, queda no rendimento em provas de endurance (resistência) e risco de osteoporose. Entretanto, as evidências científicas não justificam o uso sistemático do zinco em suplementação nutricional. Segundo a DRI (Dietary Reference Intakes), a dose diária recomendada para adultos é de no máximo 11 mg/dia de zinco para homens e 8 mg/dia para mulheres (2-5).
Atletas em dietas de restrição calórica podem sofrer deficiências no aporte de minerais. A falta de cálcio e ferro, por exemplo, pode causar fadiga e anemia, afetando a performance (desempenho) e o sistema imunológico. Recomenda-se que a dieta contenha quantidades mínimas de 1.000 mg/dia de cálcio, 15 mg/dia de ferro para mulheres e 10 mg/dia para homens. Tais necessidades são contempladas pela manipulação dietética e, em último caso, pela suplementação multivitamínica (2-5).
Contudo, o estresse dos exercícios pode resultar numa adaptação bioquímica muscular que aumenta as necessidades nutricionais. O ajuste da dieta, em termos de macronutrientes, para as maiores necessidades calóricas decorrentes das atividades esportistas, proporciona concomitantemente ajuste no consumo de
micronutrientes. Portanto, o estilo de vida saudável, incluindo dieta balanceada elevado consumo de frutas e vegetais ricos em nutrientes com ação antioxidante e de acordo com as DRIs, é a melhor maneira de orientar esportistas e atletas. Se houver necessidade do uso de suplementos alimentares, é importante que se mantenha a alimentação da forma mais saudável possível e que se tenha a orientação de um profissional especializado.

Enduring Another Rainy Day Outside the UNHCR Office.
On Monday, April 03rd, 2023, while enduring day 240th of my 4th Hunger Strike outside the UNHCR office which I have been deliberately forced into for the 4th times in Greece since the start of my protest outside this UN Agency on March 21st, 2017, I also had to go endure another rainy day inside my shelter where I have been left without any help and support.
My dire situation still remains unresolved, and I have been without multivitamins, food and money for weeks again.
Due to lack of support, I have also not been able to shower and/or do my laundry for well over three months now.
I urge you all, whoever is watching or reading this to not be indifferent in the face of this barbaric atrocity and act now.
To give you a good reason why, today is me, tomorrow it might very well be you as well.
Do the right thing now. Donate, sign the Petition, Share and tell the press/media about this.
Any other help, moral or otherwise, would also be greatly appreciated.

Just got some more info. on our pal Buffett (above):
He (he's Male) was born on May 16, 1987 at the Miami Seaquarium. His parents were 'Romeo' & 'Juliet', presumably also manatees and NOT Montagues/Capulets.
This big ole feller weighs in at 1776 lbs (807 kg) and he's 10.3 ft (313 cm ) tall (long?) and his 'umbilical girth' is 8.3 ft (253 cm) around. That's a whole lotta manatee right there!
So, what does he (and his buddy Hugh) eat to maintain this prodigious stature? Glad you asked - here's their daily diet:
