cute in quantità molto bassa.

derma;

stabilità in formulazione. Resiste alla decolorazione e alla degradazione mentre mantiene

tutte le attività biologiche dell’acido L-ascorbico.Ha le medesime proprietà schiarenti, di

protezione solare e anti invecchiamento dell’acido ascorbico. Penetra nella pelle dove è

metabolizzato come vitamina C libera;

Ascorbyl fosfato: libera acido ascorbico grazie agli enzimi epidermici. Lavora più in

superficie rispetto all’ascorbyl glucoside;

regolare la produzione di sebo della pelle grassa;

Vitamina E naturale: miscela di tocoferoli antiossidanti derivanti dall’olio di girasole, ricco di

squalene naturale.

A-Enhancer

Trattamento antirughe

rapidamente e agisce in profondità

viene convertito prima in retinolo poi in acido retinoico (forma attiva della vitamina A). Retinyl

squalene naturale.

umano.

I've lost weight - Maggie took this gag shot of me with my camera phone to send to our friend Spike in NY after I weighed in at 170 pounds. This is the least I've weighed since 1995, when I began my steady climb to 203 pounds in one year.

Since early December Maggie and I have been off dairy, caffeine, sugar, bread, and salt and eat less of everything else. We consume lots of supplements (Co-Q 10, multivitamins, fish oil, "pond scum", etc), and green tea; three times a week we have salmon - yum! - for dinner and oatmeal for breakfast every day. Maggie's skin looks ungodly beautiful.

Sis, my oldest sister, now weighs in at 125-130 after losing 75 pounds in 3 years. Our little sister Ruthie's dying of cancer almost four years ago forced us both to regard our health with a lot more seriousness; Maggie says that we can pay no greater tribute to Ruthie than to live our lives as healthily as we can.

Reuniting with Maggie and wanting to have a long and healthy life with her has provided me with further incentive to get my health under control.

Maggie and I both feel great and sleep a whole lot better these days. I could stand to pump some iron though. Obviously.

It might not look like it here, but Pudding was busy attempting to scuttle off the pillow. Had to pick him up and put him back to the centre to prevent him from being too adventurous for his frail little body.

He's still alive!

Being pure-o OCD, and him being the most worrying thing in my life currently, I think about his condition a lot. After much googling, and finally a chat with my friend who's going to graduate with a vet science degree in a couple of weeks, I think his "heart attack/stroke" thingys he has been having is probably seizures instead!

Oops, I guess I did not describe the episodes throughly enough to the vet the first time we dropped by. Mm, but so many things happened the night before that visit, that if I had went into detail everything that had happened, our consultation would have taken forever. He seemed so deathly ill then, and very dehydrated (he refused to eat and drink) that all he got was a salt and glucose jab.

Then there were so many theories too. Was it because of old age? Some complications from the snipping of his overgrown teeth? Shock, from the sounds the mole made on Animal Planet? I threw so many ideas at the vet (oops, again my OCD thing), that I guess it was hard to answer, since I try to 'sell' each theory hard (all equally convincing and confusing to me).

At this point though, the one I'm buying the most is that it's seizures due to hypoglycemia (deficiency of glucose). Because of his overgrown teeth, Pudding couldn't eat on his own the few days before his first seizure, resulting in the low blood sugar? General weakness resulted as a consequence of the seizures, and possible brain damage too? Because he continued to not be able to eat and drink on his own, he relied more or less solely on what i syringe feed him baby formulae and multivitamins.

His seizures stopped since the first visit to the vet, until Thursday arrived. The only thing that changed was the multivitamin solution. I had just gotten a new bottle from a pet shop. Upon the conversation with my friend, I realised that glucose or any form of sugar is not among the list of ingredients in this, unlike the previous Marukan one I had been feeding him all these days.

Well, seizures could be caused by other things (which require a blood test to know exactly what), than just hypoglycemia. So in hope for the best, on Friday night after the chat, I decided to switch him back to the previous multivitamin solution that actually contains glucose.

Pudding didn't have a seizure these two days! Meep, I really hope it's just hypoglycemia. But then again, it does not really explain his fur loss. Argh. Back to the vet with more questions on Tuesday...

[Andora is still intensely jealous. Haha, she made so much noise knocking over her green toy when I fetched the camera and photographed Pudding instead of her. ;)]

Found a couple of expired multivitamin capsules and before disposing them, I tried doing some reversed lens macro photography.

I don't always shoot in macro so I don't own a dedicated macro lens, and as you can see, shooting in reverse lens can be hard to have sharp focus on.

I accept any comment, from praises, awards, invitations, all the way to criticisms - as long as the criticism is constructive that I can learn and improve from. So, don't shy away with the comments!! =]

Also, consider following me! I will certainly follow back! You can never have too many friends!! =]

I grew up with a bad case of eczema. Because of the eczema, I thought that I could never, ever, ever, use product on my skin (other than the the ungodly thick Eucerin).

But then, a year and a half ago, I started on what Jim calls a "verging on obsessive, but it really works" skin-care regime. Now, my skin is as soft as a baby's bottom. I get compliments on it all the time, and I usually respond by saying, "Oh, this is totally new," which, upon writing it, makes me sound more than a little bit crazy. But anyhoo.

If you have dry skin that you want to fix, or just would like to become obsessive about your skin like I am, here's how!

What you cannot ever do:

1. Tan. Especially in a booth, because tanning gives you wrinkles and those booths (no matter how well they are cleaned) are beds of skin-infecting bacteria (I know, because my sister once managed one.)

2. Sleep with a lot of make-up on (unless you've had one too many drinks and you can't possibly remember to wash your face, then you get a pass).

3. Scrub your face with harsh, acne wash. (Unless you are a hormonal teenager.) If you are over 18 and you get zits (like we all sometimes do), dab your pimples with a retinal-a acne cream, or with egg whites, before you go to bed. Do this for a few days, until you are pimple free.

The Regime

Weekly:

1. Lumene Time Freeze Instant Lift Mask

2. Lumeme Arctic Touch Deep Cleansing Peat Mask

3. Kiss my Face Srub/Masque (used as a masque -- or simply a mask!) (If you have dry skin, don't start using this one until you get it under control with creams.)

(I use each of these masks once a week, though you can use just one of them, or any combo.)

Daily or Twice Daily Face Wash:

1. Cetafil Gentle Cleaner(If you have dry skin, DON'T SCRUB! Put on the cleanser with your fingertips, then splash some water on your face and tap it off with a soft washcloth.)

Daily Body Wash:

1. South of France Lavender scented Natural French Milled Soap

Morning (or whenever) Face Cream:

1. Vichy Nutrilogie 2 Intense Cream for Very Dry Skin (This is the cream that started it all for me. I had used other, more expensive creams but this was the first one that really worked to transform my dry and rashy skin.)

2. Burt's Bees Beeswax & Royal Jelly Eye Cream (This one starts to work immediately, tightening up the skin around your eyes. Love it.)

Mid-Afternoon, or "Going Out" Cream:

1. Lumene Time Freeze Instant Life Serum Magic Drops Beautifyer (I don't wear make-up much, but I do put this on before going out, because it perks up your skin and makes it look like you are wearing blush. I usually brush on a little bit of very, very, very light bronzer -- one made for the palest people on earth -- over it, then a swipe of shimmery eye shadow, a whisk of mascara, and some tinted lip gloss, and I'm ready to party!)

Night Cream:

1. Storybook Farms Pure & Simple Olive Oil Cream (This all-purpose cream is local, so I know that it is made by a woman who is wonderful and passionate about good body care. The cream is soft and thick and smells amazing. It is made with olive oil, shea butter, and honey and is great for dry skin.)

2. Burt's Bees Beeswax & Royal Jelly Eye Cream (again.)

Anytime Cream:

1. Dermalogica Skim Smoothing Cream for Drier or Prematurely-Aging Skin (Because sometimes the creams I've mentioned above just aren't enough.)

Hand & Nail Care:

1. Dermalogica Multivitamin Hand and Nail Treatment (Once a day, or whenever your hands are dry.)

2. Burt's Bee's Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream (Twice daily, or more on problem cuticles.)

Lip Care:

1. Kiehl's Lip Balm #1 (All day long.)

Everywhere Else:

1. Storybook Farms Pure & Simple Olive Oil Cream

2. Peace Valley Lavender Body Lotion (Their online store is closed for vacation, but trust me when I say buying any other lavender scented lotion is a waste of money when you can have this. It's a local brand and they use fabulous fresh lavender in their products and it shows. They also sell culinary lavender.)

So, there it is. I know. I am nuts. But I'm also always looking for more fabulous products (the life of an obsessive...) so let me know if you use one! :D

Here's what I take every morning. Check the notes for details. Evenings are slightly different, but similar.

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I just think it's fun to be a pain in the butt. Especially when I've nothing better to do.

Today, a medical engagement took place at Naw-abad, a village just a couple of kilometres from Camp Bastion. It was the second such clinic and was viewed as a big success by the local population. Over 30 men, 13 women and lots of children were treated with conditions such as joint pain, sore skin and upset stomachs. A minor operation which involved a tumour being removed from a local man's face was also conducted by the Afghan National Army (ANA) doctor, Colonel Durr Muhammad.

Color. Many things affect urine color, including fluid balance, diet, medicines, and diseases. How dark or light the color is tells you how much water is in it. Vitamin B supplements can turn urine bright yellow.

My collection of glass bottles. Some were acquired over the years, some were dug up in our old garden in Worcestershire. A few are quite old bottles that my mother had saved.

The British milk company Unigate produced a series of TV advertisements in the 1970s featuring characters called the Humphreys. The Humphreys were milk thieves whose only visible presence was a red and white striped straw with which to suck up the milk. TV personalities of the time, including Barbara Windsor, Arthur Mullard and Rod Hull featured in the adverts, but the campaign is best known for the slogan: "Watch out, watch out - there's a Humphrey about!"

A merchandising campaign accompanied the adverts and the Humphrey-themed mugs, milk bottles and straws are now collectors items.

Celebrities featuring in the Humphrey ads -

Muhammed Ali

Sid James

Henry McGee

Barbara Windsor

Several campaign stickers were produced: "Watch Out, Watch Out, There's a Humphrey About" which features two red and white striped straws projecting from a pocket; "Watch Out for the Humphrey Patrol" which features a row of the tops of thirteen red and white striped straws; and "Drink it Quick, Humphreys are Slick" which features a red and white striped straw projecting from a partially-drunk glass of milk are just three examples.

What is the most common question will be asked to mom-to-be or new-mommy?

Of course it is all about preparation before she has a baby.

Ops, I'm not pregnant again okey! Not yet!

This is about Rafiqh!

I don't know about others, but for me, I did lots of preparation just before I found out that I was pregnant... Like most of you know, it takes me (oh I mean US, hehe) 2 years to have a baby. If you read my previous entry, you will know why. So, I had 2 whole years to get myself well-prepared!

Right after I become a wife, I was totally ready to become a momma, but I had to wait until THE RIGHT TIME. Only God knows how I felt.

In the meantime, I read anything about pregnancy, baby, delivery yada2, you just name it, I really mean ANYTHING from all sources I could found - internet, magazines, books... I bookmarked everything which I thought are important, and I kept reading them again and again. I searched for mom-to-be and mommies' blog which were helpful and full of information, I printed out all articles and put them in 1 file, bla bla bla... Sound crazy hah?! hahaha

When we were ready to have a baby, I increased my supplement intake - calcium and acid folid pills. I continuously took the supplement and only 6months later, I got pregnant! And the supplement amounts has increased once Rafiqh in me, haha...

In the first trimester, I was badly in morning sickness mood. In second and last trimester, I was totally healthy and energetic. I could not ate a lot, it caused me to vomit, so I ate a bit but frequently. Everyday I ate yogurt, fruits, high-calcium crackers yada2 just to make sure I had enough nutrient for my baby. I avoided anything that might harm my baby such as coffee, tea, junkfoods and etc.

On my 20weeks of pregnancy, I started wearing maternity clothes. I bought 3 maternity pants, few maternity blouses, nursing bra, maternity shorts and the very comfortable sandle. Thanks God, I still had few big one-pieces and blouses to wear.

When my pregnancy almost 5months, I listed out my baby and my needs.

For baby:

- baby napkin - 10 pieces

- barut 3 set (3 different sizes) - 3 pieces each set

- sleeveless rompers - 3 pieces

- shortsleeves rompers - 3 pieces

- overall - 2 pieces

- shortsleeve shirts + long pants - 3 pairs

- longsleeve shirts + long pants - 2 pairs

- shortsleeve shirts + short pants - 2 pairs

- booties and mittens - 5 pairs

- cap

- swaddling blankets - 2

- blanket - 2 pieces

- towel - 2 pieces

- handkerchiefs - 4 pieces

- minyak zaitun

- minyak telon

- diapers

- baby wipes

- cotton buds

- grooming set -> hair brush, nail clipper

- feeding bottles - 2

- diaper bag

- stroller

- car seat

- drawer

- basket (for dirty clothes)

For mommy:

- nursing pad

- maternity pad

- confinement set (I bought Leesa Formula) - jamu, bengkung, tunku, krim

- breast pump

- multivitamin

- mommy bag (for hospital)

Oh gosh, I can't remember all the things already, sudah lupa laa...

The whole budget:

- baby and mommy' stuff RM700

(not including stroller and car seat)

- confinement set and pantang procedure RM800

- flight tickets for both mommy and baby RM3000

(real payment was over the budget +RM300)

- mommy's routine check up RM500

- hospital bills RM3000

(again, over the budget because of the operation - c-sect delivery +RM1000)

- baby's check up RM200

We spent at least RM10,000 at Malaysia. I didn't calculated our expenses in Japan.

I think it is normal to buy so many things for the first child. Then, for the next baby, the cost will be cut off itself.

Thats all for now.

Afghanistan is one of the deadliest places on earth for women and children. Some children will not live to see school age. Direct Relief has partnered with the Afghan Institute for Learning (AIL) and the Abbott Fund to help reverse the country's high maternal mortality rate and increase the survival and overall health of infants and children.

In 2005 Direct Relief and Abbott Fund began supporting AIL to train female midwives to provide skilled assistance during labor and delivery, as well as care for infants and children.

Many children in Afghanistan are underweight, and some of these are moderate to severe cases. AIL instituted a nutrition education program at its clinics in Kabul. Clinic staff trains mothers of malnourished children how to cook healthy foods and teaches the women and children in the program about safe drinking water, how to prevent malnutrition, and other nutrition topics. Abbott Fund has partnered with Direct Relief to provide grants to AIL. Abbott has provided product donations to AIL, including rehydration solutions, antibiotics, multivitamins, and nutritional supplements.

Oysters and Erectile Dysfunction

Oysters Contain Erection Boosting Nutrients

At the simplest level, oysters carry a lot of the nutrients you

need for optimal sexual health and erectile function.

These include:

-Zinc, an important building block for your production of

testosterone

-B6, which increases healthy blood flow and improves nerve

sensitivity

-Magnesium, for metabolizing nitric oxide (itself vital to the

blood flow that makes erections happen)

-Selenium, a mineral that helps with semen quality and sperm

health

-Vitamin C, which improves blood flow

-Iron, for improved oxygen content in the blood

-Omega 3 Fatty Acids that help both with blood flow and tissue

elasticity

Oysters also contain a lot of vitamin D….

Modern research hasn’t yet established exactly why vitamin D is

helpful for erections, but it has conclusively linked vitamin D

deficiency with high likelihood of erectile dysfunction.

We do know more. Vitamin D also helps with testosterone, so

that’s a good hint.

Bottom line: these guys are basically a multivitamin for erectile

health.

Afghanistan's Under 5 mortality rate is one of the highest in the world. Direct Relief has partnered with the Afghan Institute for Learning (AIL) and the Abbott Fund to help reverse the country's high maternal mortality rate and increase the survival and overall health of infants and children.

Many children in Afghanistan are underweight, and a fair portion of these are moderate to severe cases. AIL runs a nutrition education program at its clinics in Kabul reaching out to families. Clinic staff trains mothers of malnourished children how to cook healthy foods and teaches the women and children in the program about safe drinking water, how to prevent malnutrition, and other nutrition topics.

As a renovator the 3-x-3 Post-it note can restore a home better than paint and new siding. It can repair more things than duct tape. As a daily supplement -- given (not taken) every day like a multivitamin -- it fosters growth in the relationships of spouses, lovers, parents and their children; it can nourish souls; and, in my case, correct poor vision.

Story goes like this: One day a few years ago I told my wife, "I love you." Nothing unusual there. During 15 years of marriage (20 now) I'd said those three words to her 5,475 times (365 x 15 minus a dozen or so arguments each year offset by extra sentiments added like sweetener each anniversary, birthday and Valentine's).

This time, however, my wife's response was unusual. Maybe we'd been arguing and/or drifting into our separate work and projects. I honestly don't recall.

"Why?" she responded, hugging me.

"Why what?"

"Why do you love me? Why me?"

Her question wasn't rhetorical. There were many reasons I loved her, but I couldn't recall the last time I'd bothered to articulate many or any of them. Put on the spot, I waved her off, used a question to fend off the question.

"Why? What do you mean, 'Why?' Why do you love me? That's the harder question."

I'm an early riser, always first in the house. The next morning, before pouring my second mug of coffee, I repeated her question by writing it on a yellow Post-it note. I then answered it in a sentence or two. In order to tell you exactly what I wrote (assuming I would) I'd have to dig through an unsorted, sticky pile of 365 Post-its. But my response isn't the point.

The next morning I repeated and answered her question again. I scribbled "Day 2 of 365" on top of the Post-it, pretty much committing myself to a year of responses. No big deal. Restricting my thoughts/observations/praise to a 3-by-3 inch yellow square meant I had to be succinct. Each note consumed less than a minute.

However, the legwork that went into each note required a shift in my perspective.

By the time I wrote Day 7 of 365 my gratitudes had begun sounding like platitudes. "I love you because you're a good mother to our two sons" is nice, but trite. To keep the notes fresh I had to glean new material each day. I had to keep my eyes peeled for good anecdotes and things to praise. That is, instead of reacting to petty things that irritate every long-term relationship, I began noticing the simple things that sustain them. For example, the way she spent twenty minutes each day watering our baby pear tree. I'd never even known. Or the way she was the first to volunteer to keep stats for my Little League team when the regular scorekeeper was absent.

So by Day 33 of 365 I clearly understood why she was bedridden. She had caught the flu from our oldest son (then age 10) because she was a good mother, i.e., loving, empathic, selfless. Her immune system hadn't stood a chance in the face of her hands-on care. The day her fever peaked at 102 my Post-it read, "... [Y]ou loved our eldest and loved on him so much you made yourself sick. Even our 8-year-old (now 13) saw it coming. 'What is Mom thinking?' he asked me. 'She isn't,' I said. 'Sometimes love doesn't think. It just does.'"

Winter turned to spring and spring to summer before I realized that my wife and I weren't arguing as often. The habit of recording her qualities had made my gripes seem trivial. In return, my daily appreciations had encouraged her to give me more slack whenever I screwed up. It was a win-win.

A year later I was telling this story to my first book editor (Sheryl Fullerton of Wiley) in a crowded restaurant in Half Moon Bay, California. Before I could finish it I felt someone standing over my shoulder, like a waiter or waitress. I looked up and it was a young man, a customer from a nearby table. When he spoke his voice trembled.

"I've been listening to you and I just want to say, 'Thank you.'"

Tears pooled in his eyes. He explained that he was semi-estranged from his parents, and, while listening to me describe my Post-it therapy, he'd realized how much he had failed to appreciate his mother and father. Like most parents, his were selfless but imperfect. He now wished that he had focused on the former rather than the latter.

Me too, again, and before it's too late. But my regret tracks in the opposite direction of his.

A loved one told me recently that I can be too critical of my sons. They are now teenagers, with all of the computers and video games and iPods that come with that age. Screens, screens, screens, it seems I am always screaming about screens. That's not likely to change.

However, I need to focus on the larger picture. I know this. I just forget. So on New Years Day I filled out a Post-it appreciation for each son. On one, I mentioned how much I love that he is patient and tender with our dog, Kona. On the other, I mentioned how much I enjoyed his thought-provoking insights on politics and war.

Both of my kids have huge hearts and engaging minds. But those descriptions are vague, trite. If I hope to get a year's worth of material, I need to be specific. I need anecdotes and things to praise. I need an open mind and eyes that stay open. I need to pay better attention.

So, wish me luck. It's Day 2 of 365.

What’s a telomere and why they are key when talking about aging !

I always believed and emphasized with the factor that our beauty outside comes from the condition of our inside. It doesn’t matter how much we look after our skin, how much we spend in specific products but if we don’t take care of our main organ, our body, we won’t achieve the results we expect and that we aim once we start the aging process.

I came across to a very interesting studies about Telomeres that I think we all need to understand without being scientists or qualified doctors. Once we understand the importance of telomeres in our system we can start implementing additional diets, supplements, therapies and tips that we will be sharing in this blog.

Please read below.

Are Telomeres the Key to Aging ?

Inside the nucleus of a cell, our genes are arranged along twisted, double-stranded molecules of DNA called chromosomes. At the ends of the chromosomes are stretches of DNA called telomeres, which protect our genetic data, make it possible for cells to divide, and hold some secrets to how we age and get cancer.

Telomeres have been compared with the plastic tips on shoelaces, because they keep chromosome ends from fraying and sticking to each other, which would destroy or scramble an organism’s genetic information.

Yet, each time a cell divides, the telomeres get shorter. When they get too short, the cell can no longer divide; it becomes inactive or “senescent” or it dies. This shortening process is associated with aging, cancer, and a higher risk of death. So telomeres also have been compared with a bomb fuse.

What are telomeres?

Like the rest of a chromosome, including its genes, telomeres are sequences of DNA chains of chemical code. Like all DNA, they are made of four nucleic acid bases: G for guanine, A for adenine, T for thymine, and C for cytosine.

Telomeres are made of repeating sequences of TTAGGG on one strand paired with AATCCC on the other strand. Thus, one section of telomere is a “repeat” made of six “base pairs.”

In white blood cells, the length of telomeres ranges from 8,000 base pairs in newborns to 3,000 base pairs in adults and as low as 1,500 in elderly people. (An entire chromosome has about 150 million base pairs.) Each time it divides, an average cell loses 30 to 200 base pairs from the ends of its telomeres.

Cells normally can divide only about 50 to 70 times, with telomeres getting progressively shorter until the cells become senescent or die.

Telomeres do not shorten in tissues where cells do not continually divide, such as heart muscle.

Why do chromosomes have telomeres?

Without telomeres, the main part of the chromosome the part with genes essential for life would get shorter each time a cell divides. So telomeres allow cells to divide without losing genes. Cell division is necessary for growing new skin, blood, bone, and other cells.

Without telomeres, chromosome ends could fuse together and corrupt the cell’s genetic blueprint, possibly causing malfunction, cancer, or cell death. Because broken DNA is dangerous, a cell has the ability to sense and repair chromosome damage. Without telomeres, the ends of chromosomes would look like broken DNA, and the cell would try to fix something that wasn’t broken. That also would make them stop dividing and eventually die.

Why do telomeres get shorter each time a cell divides?

Before a cell can divide, it makes copies of its chromosomes so that both new cells will have identical genetic material. To be copied, a chromosome’s two DNA strands must unwind and separate. An enzyme (DNA polymerase) then reads the existing strands to build two new strands. It begins the process with the help of short pieces of RNA. When each new matching strand is complete, it is a bit shorter than the original strand because of the room needed at the end for this small piece of RNA. It is like someone who paints himself into a corner and cannot paint the corner.

Telomerase counteracts telomere shortening

An enzyme named telomerase adds bases to the ends of telomeres. In young cells, telomerase keeps telomeres from wearing down too much. But as cells divide repeatedly, there is not enough telomerase, so the telomeres grow shorter and the cells age.

Telomerase remains active in sperm and eggs, which are passed from one generation to the next. If reproductive cells did not have telomerase to maintain the length of their telomeres, any organism with such cells would soon go extinct.

Telomeres and aging

Geneticist Richard Cawthon and colleagues at the University of Utah found shorter telomeres are associated with shorter lives. Among people older than 60, those with shorter telomeres were three times more likely to die from heart disease and eight times more likely to die from infectious disease.

While telomere shortening has been linked to the aging process, it is not yet known whether shorter telomeres are just a sign of aging like gray hair or actually contribute to aging.

How big is the role of telomeres in aging?

Some long-lived species like humans have telomeres that are much shorter than species like mice, which live only a few years. Nobody knows why. But it’s evidence that telomeres alone do not dictate lifespan.

A major cause of aging is “oxidative stress.” It is the damage to DNA, proteins, and lipids (fats) caused by oxidants, which are highly reactive substances containing oxygen. These oxidants are produced normally when we breathe, and also result from inflammation, infection, and consumption of alcohol and cigarettes. In one study, scientists exposed worms to two substances that neutralize oxidants, and the worms’ lifespan increased an average 44%.

Another factor in aging is “glycation.” It happens when glucose, the main sugar we use as energy, binds to some of our DNA, proteins, and lipids, leaving them unable to do their jobs. The problem becomes worse as we get older, causing body tissues to malfunction, resulting in disease and death. Glycation may explain why studies in laboratory animals indicate that restricting calorie intake extends lifespan.

Most likely oxidative stress, glycation, telomere shortening, and chronological age along with various genes all work together to cause aging.

How Can I Lengthen My Telomeres and Slow Aging?

By Dr Axe. Food is Medicine

1. Control and Reduce Stress

Several studies have linked chronic stress to shorter telomeres. (5) A 2004 study compared healthy women who were mothers of healthy children (the control moms) and those who cared for chronically ill children (caregiving mothers). On average, the caregiving mothers had telomeres that were 10 years shorter than the control moms. (6) That is, their cells behaved as if one decade older.

Another study that examined African-American boys found that those who came from stressful environments had telomeres that were about 40 percent shorter than peers from stable homes. (7)

The takeaway? Chronic stress doesn’t just put you in a bad mood; it contributes to aging in a very real way. Exercising regularly, getting enough sleep and carving out time for yourself daily are all easy ways to help bust stress.

2. Exercise Regularly

From boosting happiness to providing an energy boost, the benefits of exercise are well documented. Now there’s another reason to hit the gym.

A recent study found that a person who did some type of exercise was about 3 percent less likely to have super short telomeres than a person who didn’t exercise at all. (8) Not only that, but themore a person exercised, the longer their telomeres. The correlation between telomere length and exercise activity seemed to be strongest among those in middle age, suggesting that it’s never too late to start a fitness program and keep those telomeres from shortening.

Another study about how exercise keeps your cells young found that middle-aged adults who were intense runners (we’re talking 45–50 miles a week) had telomere lengths that were, on average, 75 percent longer than their sedentary counterparts. Now, this doesn’t mean you need to become an ultramarathon runner. It does, however, suggest that regularly engaging in intense exercise, like HIIT workouts, can keep telomeres long and happy.

3. Eat a Range of Foods for Antioxidant and Vitamin Benefits

Foods high in vitamins are believed to protect cells and their telomeres from oxidative damage. A diet high in antioxidant foods, like berries and artichokes, can slow down aging and help prevent or reduce cell damage.

Additionally, taking a multivitamin supplement to bridge the gap between the foods you’re eating and what your body needs might lengthen telomeres as well. One study found that women who took a daily supplement had telomeres that were about 5 percent longer than nonusers. (9)

But supplements still can’t mimic all the health benefits of eating real, wholesome foods. The same study found that, even after adjusting for supplement use, participants who ate foods high in vitamins C and E also had longer telomeres. Oranges, peppers and kale are among the top vitamin C foods. For vitamin E, turn to almonds, spinach and sweet potatoes.

4. Practice Meditation and Yoga

It’s time to unroll your mat and unwind. In a 2014 study among breast cancer survivors, those who participated in mindful meditation and practiced yoga kept their telomeres at the same length; the telomeres of the control group, who did neither activity, shortened during the study time. (10)

A 2008 study among men found that, after three months of a vegan diet, aerobic exercise and stress management, including yoga, there was increased telomerase activity. A 2013 follow-up study found that those lifestyle changes are associated with longer telomeres. (11)

Meditation comes in different forms for different people. For me, it’s healing prayer and setting aside time to reflect. For others, it might be setting an intention for their day, attending a regular yoga class or spending time with loved ones without the distraction of technology or work. Whatever your meditation looks like, it’s clear it’s good for our minds and bodies.

While we wait for science to unravel all the mysteries of telomeres and how they work for -— and against — us, we can make changes to lengthen them and positively affect the rest of our lives.

To take vitamins is to acknowledge that one's food does not provide all necessary nutrients. Given the bereft condition of most soils and the reduced varieties in types of food, I am inclined to agree. After hearing Julia Ross speak at the Weston Price conference I have followed her recommendations from her books The Diet Cure and The Mood Cure. She also speaks of weaning off supplements once your levels are good and your diet is improved by Weston Price type additions like liver. So does not have to be a lifelong dependency.

She also impressed me with her multi-vitamin recommendation formulated to balance blood sugar levels. Named "True Balance". The multivitamin is the basis of the regime. Next is Vitamin C an antioxidant and immune booster. Also takes care of toxins like nitrites used in curing bacon. Followed by B-50 for the family of Vitamin Bs that work as a coenzyme to improve body functions in digestion, energy and nervous functions. I was already taking Calcium and Vitamin D per my doctor's recommendations and Primrose Oil and niacin because my chiropractor did a muscle test asking what my body needed (per what he had on hand to test with). Julia Ross also recommended taking 5-HTP over melatonin for sleep issues because she said it was best to get serotonin levels up first and use melatonin as a last resort. And the glutamine was recommended by talk on diabetes.

My sleep patterns are changed for the better. I also feel calmer overall and less wired. Supplements are subtle. The advice is to increase dosage until you feel a difference.

I also read a more mainstream book that gives an overview of vitamins called The Real Vitamin & Mineral Book. This book very clearly explained what a vitamin is and does, but the authors still cling to the mainstream paradigm of a low-fat diet and fewer animal products. While the Weston Price people are not only fat friendly, but make a distinction that factory farmed animal inputs are what cause problems not the animal product themselves. So you get the best benefit from animals fed their species appropriate food without growth hormones and unnecessary antibiotics.

Vitamins and their uses are backed up by scientific studies of what is effective or not. Some practitioners have tried Vitamin C in megadoses for curing everything from cancer to lyme disease with good success, but because studies are more contentious when it comes to curing disease this is not considered mainstream.

Though vitamins can be found in good quantity in food and animal products, this is too difficult to study because of the many variables of factory farming vs organic and whatever unnatural inputs along the way. Scientists like vitamins because it is a known manufactured entity while holistic types feel vitamins are better delivered in their natural forms since we still don't understand all the interactions of micronutrients and the food they are found in. Thus I am piling on the eggs and organ meats.

This is the worlds largest production facility that manufactures Beta Carotene. It uses a number of dangerous carcinigens to make this food additive.

DSM bought this facility from Roche in 2000 and soon after most of the quality staff left also. It is presently being run by a group of substandard operations staff, managed by a group of managers that washed out from larger, more demanding facilities.

Interesting article about vitamins and beta carotene:

Studies showing the negative or null effects of vitamins supplements are so common that it is surprising doctors still find these studies to be surprising. Vitamins are not as simple as A-B-C.

The latest bit of confusion appears in the April 27 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. Doctors in Australia provided nearly 1,900 pregnant women with either supplements of vitamins C and E or a placebo to see whether the vitamins would lower the risk of developing high blood pressure during pregnancy. It didn't work.

Surprisingly, the doctors said, the vitamin group had a slightly higher rate of high blood pressure compared to the placebo group.

We love our vitamins

The levels of vitamins C and E were greater than those found in an ordinary multivitamin tablet—1,000 milligrams of C and 400 IU of E, or roughly 10 and 20 times the recommended daily allowance. In an editorial accompanying the study, doctors said that supplements at these levels should not be prescribed routinely.

But we love our vitamins.

Americans spend about $2 billion a year on vitamins C and E, along with beta carotene (a precursor of vitamin A) and selenium, according to Nutrition Business Journal. These are the most popular antioxidants, a class of chemicals said to cure just about everything.

The trouble is, science can't seem to support the bad movie script created by the vitamin supplement industry.

No simple movie plot...

Here's the plot, a battle between good and evil: Rogue chemicals called free radicals roam about the body like brazen street punks, smashing cellular walls and roughing up innocent DNA molecules, causing cancers and the diseases of middle- and old-age. Their flagrant disregard for the law would continue unchecked if it weren't for swashbuckling antioxidants swooping in on the wings of vitamin supplements, disarming the free radicals of their menacing electrons and converting them into respectable molecular citizens.

But the body, it seems, is not governed by a Hollywood "B" script. Free radicals are as good as they are bad, and too many antioxidants may do the body harm.

It is true that antioxidants serve as sort of a rust protector for the body, stopping a process called oxidation. Important molecules in the body, such as those that form artery walls, become oxidized when they lose an electron. Once oxidized, they become unstable and easily break apart.

The culprit, without a doubt, is the free radical.

Free to destroy

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules or single atoms with unpaired electrons looking for a mate. So they steal an electron from the first thing they encounter, perhaps a cell wall or DNA. As free-radical damage mounts, cells can no longer perform properly. Disease sets in. An excess of free radicals has been cited in cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and cancer.

Aging itself has been defined as a gradual accumulation of free-radical damage.

Yet free radicals are necessary for life. The body's ability to turn air and food into chemical energy depends on a chain reaction of free radicals. Free radicals are also a crucial part of the immune system, floating through the veins and attacking foreign invaders.

Hydrogen peroxide is a prime example of a free radical. Your blood actually contains trace amounts of hydrogen peroxide, an internal germ fighter. In fact, you could not fight bacteria without free radicals.

Good luck

How antioxidants work is an utter mystery, which explains the contradicting results of very large and well-conducted studies in the past decade showing, for example, that vitamin E slowed the progress of coronary artery disease but increased the risk of a heart attack.

One thing that studies do reveal is that a diet rich in antioxidants, as opposed to supplements, is associated with lower rates of cancer and circulatory disease. Richard Veech of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, whom I interviewed a few years ago, sums it up best, I think:

"People don't want to exercise," he said. "They don't want to eat healthy food. They don't want to stop drinking; they don't want to stop smoking; they don't want to stop having dangerous sex. They want to take a pill. Well, good luck."
