Love Tank (2009)

by S.Teddy Darmawan (Indonesia)

Multiplex, Resin, Metal Structure

Approx. 200 x 500 x 650 cm

Tanks, synonymous with the landscape of war, are instrumental war machines in the propagation of western supremacy.

Pagoda, adorned with lotuses and often part of a temple compound, believed to be the padmasana, the seats of gods and goddesses who rule this world, is the shape of temples and a symbol for the levels of pure love in Eastern cultures.

This work expresses the interaction between the East and West cultures – an interaction which often ends in clashes. The adaptation of these cultures is symbolised through the visual language of seven tanks stacked on top of one another forming a tall structure resembling a Pagoda. The tanks are decorated or camouflaged with red lotuses and the juxtaposition transforms the killing machine into one that conveys love and peace to humankind.

ART-ON-SITE

The National Museum’s Art-On-Site public art programme invites artists to exploit the site-specific qualities of the National Museum’s public spaces, to create provocative and original work that alters the visitor’s perceptions of the museum environment. Working in close collaboration with the Museum’s programmers over a sustained period of time, it is hoped that each commissioned artwork can mark a new stage or open up new possibilities in the creative development of the selected artist.

The Point is an entertainment complex in Central Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, England. When it opened in 1985, it included the UK's first multiplex cinema. The front part of the building has a distinctive mirrored crystal ziggurat shape, framed by external steel beams at each corner, joined at the apex. Originally it had red neon lights connecting the apexes at each side, so that it looked like a pyramid at night.

This is the home-built replica TV Multiplex in better light and in better quality. since i always loved the modular build of older 1960s homes i thought i'd do the same thing with an old defunct Admiral stereo-only one. the stereo part fried last winter and i gutted it out and cut a hole for the TV, and the doors hide the whole works. the double-deck VCR, the main VCR, and the tuner/DVD system are all hidden behind the speaker grilles, the felt of them lift up (i cut a little back so i could use them as a flap) to gain access to those units, while giving the impression that it's an original radio/TV/phonograph unit.

This is part 1 of the tour of my home :) it's a 1995 Sportsmen's (yeah, not exactly the name i would've chosen....) 35-foot travel trailer. this type of home is easily paid for (no mortgage!) and is easily moved without the need of a separate moving truck to haul the stuff inside it, as it's all part of the entire unit. this way i can have my home in the woods and leave it too!
