Based loosely on Ganzfeld experiments (a technique used in parapsychology in the 1970s as a way of invoking telepathy), Color Field Immersion involves masking the audience with semi-transparent blindfolds onto which light projections are mapped. Similar to sensory deprivation, Color Field Immersion provides perceptual deprivation, replacing the entirety of each audience member’s visual field with washes of color, line, and movement – often inducing hallucinations as the brain seeks to replace lost stimuli. Flipping the traditional performer-audience relationship, the internalized experience becomes the location of the performance. Combined with rich, textural soundscapes, Color Field Immersion creates a deeply immersive perceptual architecture of sound and vision.

Doron Sadja is an American artist, composer, and curator whose work explores modes of perception and the experience of sound, light, and space. Working primarily with multichannel spatialized sound – combining pristine electronics with lush romantic synthesizers, extreme frequencies, dense noise, and computer-enhanced acoustic instruments, Sadja creates post-human, hyper-emotive sonic architecture. Although each of Sadja’s works are striking in their singular and focused approach, his output is diverse: spanning everything from immersive multichannel sound pieces to sexually provacative performance / installation works, and stroboscopic smoke, mirror, laser, and projection shows. Doron has published music on 12k, ATAK, and Shinkoyo records, and has performed/exhibited at PS1 MoMa, Miami MOCA, D’amelio Terras Gallery, Cleveland Museum of Art, Issue Project Room, and Roulette amongst others. Sadja co-founded Shinkoyo Records and the West Nile performing arts venue in Brooklyn (RIP), and has curated various new music/sound festivals around NYC, including the multichannel SOUNDCORRIDORS Festival, Easy Not Easy, John Cage Musicircus, and more.

"Deconstruction" by James Coker at the Santa Fe Complex

"Deconstruction" is a large-scale, multichannel video work using footage of the the demolition of Albuquerque's original I-25/I-40 interchange in 2000-2001 to produce a new interpretation of the scene, one that highlights its internal contradictions: human activity as mechanical motion vs. machine anthropomorphism, the weight of the concrete sections being dismantled and the weightlessness of the dust they release, and the noise of the machinery against the silence of the structures.

Midnight Moment: Pipilotti Rist, Open My Glade (Flatten)

January 1, 2017 - January 31, 2017

every night from 11:57pm-midnight

Times Square Arts will break out of Times Square’s electronic billboards with artist Pipilotti Rist’sOpen my Glade (Flatten), 2000-2017, from 11:57 p.m. to midnight every night in January. This project is a part of Midnight Moment, a monthly presentation by the Times Square Advertising Coalition (TSAC) and Times Square Arts, and is presented in partnership with the record-breaking survey exhibition Pipilotti Rist: Pixel Forest, on view at the New Museum through January 15.

Pioneering video artist Pipilotti Rist re-confronts the screens of Times Square in a new multichannel edition of a work originally commissioned by the Public Art Fund in 2000. Originally appearing on a single screen in Times Square, Rist now surrounds the plazas on multiple screens in vivid color, flattening her face against glass as if to break through the screens and into Times Square. Her features humorously distorted, her makeup smeared, Rist transgresses expectations for women in media while also questioning the invisible boundaries placed on women and their history, experiences, pains and wishes in ways that resonate just as much in 2017 as they did in 2000.

Description:

Features:

On vehicle models from the E65 on, BMW is for the first time using fibre-optic cables as standard for

communication between control units.

The optical buses are notable for their high data transmission rate and they are not susceptible to

electromagnetic interference. The optical buses in question are the most bus, primarily used for in-car

entertainment electronics, and the byteflight bus, which serves predominantly safety-critical functions.

OPS is intended for rapid programming of control units.

When operated at the SSS, no diagnostic or technical measuring pro-cedures are possible, as no measuring technology

is incorporated; in this instance, OPPS / OPS is used predominantly for programming control units (flashing).

Communication with the vehicle can be performed both via the MOST and via the OBD interface. The OBD interface

is required for the power supply to the OPPS / OPS and has communication properties via which the vehicle can be

identified and the data to be programmed can be determined. From CIP version 7.0, it is possible to delete fault

code memories via OPPS / OPS.

OPPS has been designed for encoding, individualising and programming (CIP) via the Software Service Station (SSS)

and envisaged for use as part of the BMW diagnostic system (DIS) from DISPlus and Group Tester One (GT1).

It is intended for testing and programming tasks from the E65 series, taking the place of the diagnostic head.

By random chance, I met the person who happened to write Roland's "the synthesizer" book!

Mr. Robin Donald Graham

This is a four volume series that includes:

1. "practical synthesis for electronic music" volume one - 2nd edition

2. "practical synthesis for electronic music" volume two - 2nd edition

3. "multichannel recording for electronic music" - 2nd edition

4. "A foundation for electronic music" - 2nd edition.

This book was written in 1978. Some of the other stuff in the pic are old Roland sales catalogs.

Writing funding applications. Current proposal patter:

'CLUSTER is a multichannel sound sculpture comprising a cuboid-shaped suspended walk-through array of 280 independent channels. This configuration provides a versatile platform for the precise three-dimensional spatial imaging of sound and is both sonically compelling and visually striking. As a portable system, it aims to present sonic art in a new and highly accessible context within public spaces, encouraging and widening public engagement in new media arts.'

The idea is that you move around sound which also moves around you. Imagine that you can recreate whole sonic environments in the space -- e.g. a forest with stream below you stretching into the distance and birds and rustling trees around and above; or a whole flock of birds that wheels and turns around you and the space. Or imagine being _inside_ a pinball machine, being surrounded by the ratcheting and rolling and machinery and being able to walk around it. That's what I'm looking for.

Three decades of police communication are represented in this photo (taken without the flash) of six radios - all of them body worn. The one at the back with the crudely chopped off antenna is the oldest - a Pye Pocketfone 70 dating from 1971 and, while was used by bus inspectors in West Yorkshire, most police forces (including the City of London) did use it. The one next to it is a Pye PFX dating from 1984 and was the first synthesised multichannel police radio, being used by most forces including the British Transport Police and Customs & Excise, as well as the fire service.

It was also relatively cheap as well, costing me £16.50 and came with a fist mike, enabling it to be body worn and the reason why it towers over the PF85 next to it is because it's fitted with a high-capacity battery, which incidentally is past being rechargeable. The PF85 next to it was the last handheld/bodyworn radio to carry the Pye name before Philips (or Royal Philips Electronics of Eindhoven to give the Dutch company its proper name) took over Cambridge-based concern.

In front of the Pye trio are two Motorola MTS 2000s, although the first one is a Flashport (serial number 705583) It may have a sticker saying "Property of British Transport Police", but I'm not so sure because the channels seem to suggest it was used by the Met. Back in September, that cost me £24.50 and, unlike a similar radio I got last May, you can hear the squelch. As for the fist mike attached to it, well, I had to buy that separately. The one next to that is similar but an MTS 2000E and cost me £37 last May but was the biggest waste of money ever, because although the seller assured me that I could pick up the police channels already on it once I got the battery charged, when I finally got the battery charged (because the charger took bloody ages to arrive) I could hear fuck all!

Finally, the one on the right is my cheapest ever radio to date...a Motorola MT 700. I bought this at a radio sale at Hack Green Nuclear Bunker last year and I think the fact that it was ex-Transport Police influenced me. Like most old body worn radios with detachable mikes, the fist mike is screw-on, although it doesn't have a battery. Never mind the Transport Police, I think these were used by British Rail, because in a photo in an old BR clothing guide from 1991, a member of the station staff is seen using one.

This image was captured with a Nikon D-2X camera with a 70-210mm D series lens using the Nikon electronic file format (.Nef) Shot on Lexar Flash media. All file was post processed using NIKON capture. Black and white conversion done using the Versace Multichannel mixer trchnique and NiK SilverefexPro in Photoshop CS. Multichannel 2014

Utrecht, The Netherlands

23-24 April 2014

A visit to Xidi gave much food for thought. It was one of the most beautiful and jaded villages I've seen. It's an interesting place: a ghost of a ghost.

Every family has turned their living room into a trinket shop cluttered with assorted stone and wood carvings; they confine themselves to side rooms with formica walls and plastic furniture. The new generation does not remember the time when tour groups did not gallop through the village after a trumpeting guide. It's been like this for thirty years, but intensified since the Unesco certification in 2000.

I don't know how authentic Xidi is as a sample of Ming and Qing architecture. Every gateway and courtyard we've seen has been extensively 'restored', 'improved' and patched up, rid of Cultural Revolution damage together with some character. Huge parking lot on the former farmland, a battalion of personnel in fuchsia parkas, multichannel electronic turnstiles and steep entrance fees make Xidi quite a spectacle.

As a historic landscape, Xidi is not as dead as Xitang, but not as alive as Shaxi. The original reason for the village to be is gone. There is hardly a household not involved in the tourism industry, as either keepers of their house museums, souvenir vendors or produce suppliers for the village restaurants and inns. Xidi is a resort with a late-Ming flair, but not for history buffs, more like for those with nostalgia for pastoral past.

No doubt, it's China's encouragement of domestic consumption, part of which is internal tourism, that made Xidi and Hongcun an integral part of the 'Huangshan package'. The proximity to rich Shanghai and Hangzhou is also important.

The Postcard

A Frith's Series postcard that was posted in Guildford using a ½d. stamp on the 1st. December 1906. The card was sent to:

Mrs. Senior,

38, Norfolk Avenue,

Southend-on-Sea.

The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:

"Dear G,

Arrived safely.

Miss you both very

much. Quite dark

before apartments

secured.

Feel a wee bit lonely,

so happy when with

you.

More news soon.

Love,

M. L."

The Jolly Farmer is still going strong to this day, although it is now called The Weyside.

Arthur Flowerdew

So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?

Well, the 1st. December 1906 marked the birth in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk of Arthur Flowerdew.

James Arthur Flowerdew's claimed recollections of the ancient city of Petra in Jordan have been offered as a supposed proof of the existence of reincarnation.

-- Arthur Flowerdew - The Early Years

From his adolescence, Flowerdew experienced strange visions of a stone city carved into a cliff, which were particularly strong when he played amongst the multicolored pebbles on a beach near his home. The clarity of his visions grew as he did.

-- Arthur Flowerdew and Petra

One day, as an adult, he was watching a BBC documentary on the ancient city of Petra in Jordan, and immediately recognized it as the city of his visions.

He became convinced that he had lived a previous life in Petra, and contacted the BBC. They filmed and broadcast a short piece on Flowerdew, which the Jordanian government saw and was intrigued by.

They offered to fly Flowerdew out to Petra in order to examine its remains, and perhaps offer insights on analyzing the city.

In The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying, Sogyal Rinpoche claims that before Flowerdew left for Jordan, he was interviewed by an archaeological expert excavating Petra in order to test his knowledge of the ancient city.

He also claims that Flowerdew described the city with astounding accuracy, and pointed out three landmarks prominent in his memory, as well as going directly to these landmarks upon his arrival at Petra (including his purported place of murder).

Arthur also explained a very plausible use for a device whose function had baffled archaeologists, and even correctly identified the locations of many landmarks that had yet to be excavated.

Many experts said that Flowerdew had more knowledge of the city than many professionals studying it, and they did not believe him to be an incredible con man (a feat which, in this case, they felt would have taken extraordinary skill). The archeological expert on Petra who accompanied Flowerdew to Jordan said:

"He's filled in details and a lot of it is very consistent

with known archeological and historical facts, and it

would require a mind very different from his to be

able to sustain a fabric of deception on the scale of

his memories — at least those he's reported to me.

I don't think he's a fraud. I don't think he has the

capacity to be a fraud on this scale."

According to Rinpoche's story, Flowerdew maintained that he had never seen or heard of Petra before the BBC documentary, and had never read any literature relating to the city.

Many spiritual leaders believe that Flowerdew's experience offers highly compelling evidence for the existence of rebirth or reincarnation.

Mircea Eliade may have used Flowerdew's experience as the basis of his 1976 novel "Youth without Youth", which was adapted into a film in 2007 by Francis Ford Coppola.

Arthur died at the age of 95 at James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston-on-Sea, Norfolk on the 30th. September 2002.

Rune Elmqvist

The 1st. December 1906 also marked the birth of Rune Elmqvist. Rune was a Swedish physician turned engineer.

He developed the first implantable pacemaker in 1958, working under the direction of Åke Senning, senior physician and cardiac surgeon at the Karolinska University Hospital in Solna, Sweden.

Elmqvist was born in Lund, and received his MD in 1939. He initially worked as a medical doctor (having trained in Lund), but later worked as an engineer and inventor.

In 1927 he developed an electronic potentiometer to measure pH, and in 1931 he developed a multichannel electrocardiograph.

In 1940 Rune joined the electronics firm Elema-Schönander which later became Siemens-Elema.

In 1948, he developed the first inkjet ECG printer which he called the mingograph.

The first pacemaker was developed in the 1950's and it was tested by Dr. Senning on patient Arne Larsson at the request of the patient's wife. It was implanted during an operation on the 8th. October 1958.

The pacemaker was based upon a single transistor, and gave 2V pulses at intervals of 1.5 milliseconds to produce 70 heartbeats per minute. The earliest pacemaker was moulded with Araldite epoxy.

However the first pacemaker worked for only three hours, and had to be replaced. The second one lasted for six weeks.

Arne Larsson needed nearly 30 pacemakers during his lifetime, and he lived until 2001, outliving both Elmquist and his surgeon Dr Senning who died in 2000.

In 1957, Elmquist received an honorary doctorate, and in 1976 he received a gold medal from the Royal Academy of Technology and Science of Sweden.

In 1960, Rune became head of development at Elema-Schönander. His son Hakan Elmqvist became a professor of medical technology at the Karolinska Institute.

Rune died at the age of 90 on the 15th. December 1996. He was laid to rest in the Grevie Kyrkogård, Grevie, Båstads kommun, Skåne län, Sweden.
