I caught this mud hornet yesterday in the kitchen with a drinking glass. So before I let him go I took his photo (through the glass!). He wasn't happy!
Oh yuck! After a heavy rain, there are some pretty deep mud puddles around due to the (still ongoing) construction. I looked out my window and here is this guy!
Note to self... keep Diego on leash.
To be honest, I haven't found many good places to take photos since moving to Ottawa. Ottawa area photographers always recommend a place called Mud Lake. I made it to Mud Lake right before sunset on a day in early July. The light was not great, and I was a bit rushed to take photos. Nonetheless, there was some interesting fodder there, and Mud Lake would certainly merit a return visit if I wasn't moving again in a couple of weeks!
This shot is not brilliant technically - the trees and foreground are underexposed, and I couldn't do as much with the sunbeams as I wanted to to brighten the rest of the scene. Should have had my tripod and bracketed. I still like the feel of the shot, with the sun illuminating the dark forest one last time before sinking below the horizon. This shot is much better when viewed large on a dark background.
