The mud was taken from the pool and put into these vessels. We were tasked with taking handfuls and putting it all over our body until we were totally covered.
This is the 2nd pool where we were able to start taking off the mud. It was quite warm, coming in the from the hot spring on the property. This pool didn't have mud, so it was clean water.
Then, we entered the mud pool. The mud came up to my mid-thigh, so this was just getting more covered in mud, and not really taking any off yet. In the back corner there the mud was coming into the pool, and it was super hot.

Hell's Gate, Rotorua, New Zealand - 9 September 1990
Hell's Gate, around 16km outside Rotorua, is one of New Zealand's most active geothermal areas. Although not as spectacular as the more famous Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve in Rotorua itself (it doesn't have any geysers), it is probably just as interesting with its steaming lakes, boiling mudpools and sulphur fumeroles, and the English name seems particularly appropriate...!
