some places just cry out for a scenic photograph. this is one of those places. This corner of the canal in Bruges always has a scrum of Cameras josteling for position.

This is most likely the last of my Autumn Dreams series, the extreme wind my area has experienced is certain to have wrecked the last remnants of colored leaves. I'm a sucker for a red tree in fall, this was my last photo on the way out of the highlands Saturday. The pristine look of winter had fallen away in this location, would have been quite the sight a few hours earlier I'm sure. I'm using a black canvas on my snow photos, the bright white border dulls it all down I think.

I have been well satisfied this year with the autumn photos I got staying within 50 or 60 miles from my home. It has helped me find the smaller scenes and I've been blessed to stumble into quite a few gems in a wide variety of circumstances.

Most laneway alleys in Hamilton have been closed off; this one remained as a pedestrian path.

Masterpiece of Francesco Borromini.

The Church is also known as San Carlino owing to its small proportions

The oval entablature to the dome has a 'crown' of foliage and frames a view of deep set interlocking coffering of octagons, crosses and hexagons which diminish in size the higher they rise. Light floods in from windows in the lower dome that are hidden by the oval opening and from windows in the side of the lantern. In a hierarchical structuring of light, the illuminated lantern with its symbol of the Holy Trinity is the most brightly lit, the coffering of the dome is thrown into sharp and deep relief and light gradually filters downwards to the darker lower body of the church.

05.08.2021. - Oton

The delayed RegioJet train from Split is passing by the iconic Čupković viaduct in Oton, Croatia.

Most birds have long arm bones and short finger bones, but our hummers are the opposite, allowing them to only flex at the shoulder. And that ball and joint at the shoulder allow the 50 to 200 wingbeats per SECOND in a fast figure eight motion with nearly 180-degree rotation, which gives them their helicopter hovering and flying ability.

Like most photographers, finding new landscape locations around your local area can be difficult and frustrating and I sometimes feel like I live in the most unphotogenic place in the world. I know that's not true but everyone is allowed to have a crappy day occasionally.

There is however, one place that never disappoints... the beach. Even though we are blessed with more beautiful and pristine beaches than you can poke a stick at, you can pick a spot and every time you shoot it, it's different. Between tide, wind, time of day (and the list goes on), you never get the same photo twice... love the beach

Most of the times these owls will hunt to the left or the right of the photographers. As they get used to our presence they begin to fly right towards us. Closer, and closer, and closer. Thank you Mr Owl.

The Zollverein Coal Mine Complex in Essen (More images in my series Zollverein) is one of the most impressive surviving examples of industrial culture from the modern era.

With their design of the central shaft facilities for Shaft XII, built between 1928 and 1932, Fritz Schupp and Martin Kremmer created the single most important part of the complex, both technically and architecturally. The industrial monument has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001.

The site of the Zollverein coal mine and coking plant stands symbolises industrial history and structural transformation in the economy. Here, Schupp and Kremmer created a high-performance industrial complex with clear aesthetics and a high degree of functionality. Symmetry, axiality and gradation of scale – the organising principles of the modernist formal idiom – came into their own here in a new context.

The curtain wall façades, designed in the style of New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit) and made of a steel framework inset with clinker bricks, earned the colliery the reputation of being “the most beautiful coal mine in the world”, even back in its working days. Clearly visible from afar, the 55-metre-high double winding tower rises above the other buildings as an icon of mining architecture and a symbol for the entire Ruhr region. Years later, Fritz Schupp built the Zollverein Coking Plant, which went into operation in 1961, in the same style as the coal mine complex. In its day, the mine was regarded as the largest and most efficient one in the world. An era came to an end when the coal mine ceased operations in 1986 and the coking plant in 1993. A total of 600,000 people were employed here and coal was last extracted from a depth of 1,000 metres.

In the context of the International Building Exhibition (IBA) Emscher Park, the facility, which is protected as a historical monument, was promoted as a model project; the first phase of refurbishment began in 1989. Today, the Zollverein complex is the central anchor point of the Route of Industrial Heritage – a 400-kilometre-long trail along the industrial and cultural heritage of the Ruhr region. Based on a master plan by Rem Koolhaas and his firm OMA in collaboration with the architectural firm of Heinrich Böll, the site was transformed with conversions and new buildings by Norman Foster and SANAA into a site for culture, business and education. Today, the Zollverein is a popular tourist destination that is home to the Ruhr Museum, the Red Dot Design Museum, the Zollverein Monument Trail, and the new Folkwang University of the Arts with its design department, plus the studios and ateliers of four dozen creative companies.

Could be my most favorite ever. I loved these girls. Perfectly cute.

I think most of you who follow my photo journey know of my love of the highlands of Scotland, however, recent weather hasn't been too kind for me to head off that way. What do you do when you can't get to the highlands? Well in my case, I head for the hills of the lowlands. This photo was captured in the Galloway Forest Park which is run by the Forestry Commision. Underneath this little bridge is the Carrick Gala which was flowing harder and faster than I have ever seen before, a testimony to the amount of rain mother nature has thrown in our direction this winter.

One of the most iconic photo-spots in Germany. It is far out in the East, out of (almost) everyone's way. But we made the effort to get there. I planned to shoot through sunset into the blue hour. But the weather gods weren't quite with us that evening... except for a few brief moments before sunset when the bridge was lit up dramatically. Those few moments were totally worth it!

The national nature reserve of Orti is located in the central Ardennes, in the valley of the Laval stream, near its confluence with the western Ourthe, south of the village of Lavacherie, in the municipal territory of Sainte-Ode. Most of its approximately 6.5 hectares is occupied by a mosaic of megaphorbiaia and acidophilous wet meadows with meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria), sharp-tepaled rush (Juncus acutiflorus), comaret (Comarum palustre), meadow succise ( Succisa pratensis), bistort (Persicaria bistorta), valerian (Valeriana officinalis), common loosestrife (Lysimachia vulgaris) and many other plants. Shrub beds have gradually settled in following the abandonment of the site as a mowing meadow. It is often swamp sassai with auricle willow (Salix aurita) where the soil is most waterlogged. In other places, a young deciduous forest evolves freely, notably in the aspect of an alder-ash forest along the watercourse. A mesotrophic pond completes the range of habitats present in this beautiful wetland. This valley bottom is frequented by a particularly remarkable fauna, quite comparable to what can be observed in the other still well-preserved sites in the region. Another protected area, the ZHIB d'Orti, extends over almost 4 ha just to the east, on the opposite bank of the Laval stream. This state reserve is almost entirely included in the Natura 2000 network in the BE34031 site "Middle basin of the western Ourthe". It is also entirely encompassed within the limits of the Deux Ourthes Natural Park.

Most of my life I have overlooked birds, especially small ones. Then I got serious about photography. Photography gives us the unique ability to see small things in a way we never have able to before. Now I see these small birds in their exquisite detail and I can appreciate their tiny lives and their natural perfection. One can see the tiny patterns of the way their feathers lay. The rough durable feet with their tiny effective claws. The perfection of nature is so well displayed in a closeup photograph of a creature and the image can be studied and lingered over. The animal is seen in such a way that is impossible to see with just casual observation. This why I fell in love with photography, especially of wildlife. The photo offers a glimpse of life we normally don't see, an enhancement, an amplification that allows us to truly see something, maybe for the first time. This Titmouse is just as exquisite and perfect as a bald eagle. The perfection of nature and evolution is everywhere around us and a photograph captures the moment of time and perfection for us to view in a way we hardly ever can otherwise.

Here are my most loved photos from 2024, chosen by your favourites.

Thank you for your unwavering support and the inspiration you have given me throughout the year.

“...don't bother to learn more than the simplest facts of flight - how to get from shore to food and back again. For most gulls it's not flying that matters but eating."

“Why is it,” Jonathan puzzled, “that the hardest thing in the world is to convince a bird that he is free, and that he can prove it for himself if he’d just spend a little time practicing? Why should that be so hard?”

Christine Falls is probably the most photographed place inside Mount Rainier National Park due to the fact that it's gorgeous AND it's right off the side of the road which usually means a long queue and a rushed shot elbow to elbow with your new best friends. On this day, however, I had it all to myself as the snow plows had scooped out the parking lot and left a five foot berm of snow in front of the trailhead.

This is the 37 foot lower tier of the Christine Van Trump Falls, so named after a nine year old girl who attempted the ascent of the mountain with her dad in 1889. The young lady made it to 10,000 feet despite a crippling nervous disorder.

The wonderful arched bridge framing the scene for us is concrete and faced with rubble stonework. Built in 1927, it spans 56 feet of Van Trump creek and it has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1991 and for me it is the highlight of the drive through the park.

I've posted this video twice so if you've seen the lahar crash through here don't bother, but for the rest of you, hold on to your seat. :)

(deep breath) Howdy! Hope all are well, I am for the most part. I've been working a lot and when I'm not working I've been on the couch resting. Then the holidays, crummy weather and suddenly I don't have anything to share AND I'm way behind with all of you. gasp. :) anywho, I still don't have much that I'd call Flickrworthy but I wanted to say hi and I'm still alive and have been secretly peeking. I have a few hours before I get back to the grind this morning so I'm going to give catching up a go. I'm still not out of the woods with work, two more bank remodels to do on top of my regular work load which means long days, nights, weekends because the banks don't close for remodels and we have contractors who use us exclusively for their cabinets and we have to keep them happy at the same time. boo hoo, whatever. I'm going to try to catch up and stay caught up so when the day comes that my camera leaps joyfully back into my hands I'll be ready. :)

The most moving shrine to see in the precinct is Ashifunesha Shrine (“Ship of Reeds Shrine”) – a rare shrine branch which recalls the god protecting the prematurely born brother of the goddess Amaterasu, who, unable to receive the blessings of this world, passed over to the ghost world in a ship made of reeds. The shrine is thus for prayers of the protection of the soul of the departed foetus.

. The most popular salmon pools on the river are the Turn Pool, Quarry Pool, Rock Pool, Whin Pool and Meadow Pool. Three rods are allowed and it is such a straightforward river that a gillie is not necessary.

The spring fish average 9 lb in weight and run in February, March, April and May. The grilse average 4 lb and run in June and July. A feature of the river is that it gets a small run of very big summer salmon, some of which weigh over 20 lb. The best fish in recent years was 19 lb and was a summer fish.

Most spiders get bad reputations from the true dangerous spiders but no spiders are purposefully out to hurt humans. Most bites are in an act of self defense and their venoms true purpose is for preying for food.

From this mornings walk that did not last very long as I found this amazing little Dolophones on a bit of grass. I was excited to see if I could get a nice deep stack after noticing it has a flagpole on its back.

I went looking for a stick with some moss on it once I had that I had my needed ingredients. I used a cardboard box for the background which worked very well. I waited patiently trying to coax this guy into a nice spot. After several tries it seems it decided to get into the most awesome position ever and allowed me enough time to brace myself and capture 70 images it was almost as if it knew I had what I needed as I had just enough time to rattle off 70 and it moved.

I am so pleased with this image.

70 hand held images where loaded into Adobe PS for stacking.

The spider was released exactly where it was found unharmed and famous on social media.

The description of Lofoten as a fairy tale land comes from the Norway's great poet Bjornstjerne Bjornson.

When you like nature as me, Lofoten is an amazing place to be, especially Reine. Reine has been chosen by Time magazine as one of the most beautiful fjords in the world, a sight for sore eyes. The views are just breathtaking, snow covered mountains, deep fjords, and beautiful colors.

The weather in Lofoten changes rapidly in winter. First half of my trip it was none-stop raining almost every day, I spent most of my time scouting or sitting in my cozy water front Rorbu cabin and enjoying the view from the window.

Landscape photography is a waiting game, this is the one after ten days of waiting ...…

After waiting most of the day for the Trona Railroad to get underway up to the Searles interchange, this is what we ended up with when it finally started up the hill. A crapped out motor threw a wrench in the afternoon crews day immediately, followed by 2 hours of switching, and finally cutting the train to double the hill. These 3 events resulted in an after sunset run on the coolest part of the their line, which was disappointing for my friends and I. Although the disappointment was very high, we still were able to capture this shot looking down at them as they were splitting the train to double the hill.

Most fawns here in Wisconsin are born in May and June. During the first couple of months, fawns spend most of their time hiding, away from their mothers. The mother visits very briefly only twice or three times a day to feed the fawn and move the baby/babies to a new location. Fawns also have underdeveloped scent glands, meaning they don't have a scent for predators to detect. Until a fawn is old enough to be fully mobile and able to outrun danger, the fawn’s best defense is to remain hidden and freeze if danger approaches. And yes, the mom spends most of each day separate from the fawn to avoid attracting predators by her own presence and scent.

If you find a fawn, the best thing you can do is leave it alone. The mother is likely nearby and continuing to check on the fawn. If the baby is injured or appears to be in distress, contact the wildlife rehabilitation or rescue near you.

It took me some effort to get a decent photo of this hiding fawn. I had seen him once before earlier in the summer, when he was a newborn and he has a twin. Their mother I see frequently. The doe typically hides twin fawns separately to protect them from predators. She does this by leaving them in different, secluded locations, often within her familiar home range, and only returning to nurse them. This strategy minimizes the risk of both fawns being discovered by a predator at the same time.

Rabelera holostea, known as greater stitchwort, greater starwort, and addersmeat, is a perennial herbaceous flowering plant in the family Caryophyllaceae.

Stellaria, the genus name, means star-like. The specific epithet holostea comes from the Greek holosteon, literally meaning 'entire bone'; thus it is a derogatory reference to the brittleness of the weak stems of this plant.
