Eastern Sierra Nevada thunderstorms build over Mono Lake, Mono Craters, and Lee Vining, California.
Mono Lake can be an unforgiving place in which to try to make photographs during the day, but sometimes one gets lucky! It is a wonderful place, but if you only know it from photographs - which, of course, tend to be made at the most appealing times - you might not know that it is often hot and hazy and dry during the day. These are among the reasons that it is a place often photographed at dawn or at sunset on days when the clouds are interesting. (The latter poses its own set of problems, since the Sierra Nevada range begins to block the light well before actual sunset.)
But I did get lucky on this late July afternoon. It was thunderstorm weather, so there were some very impressive clouds floating around. However, the clouds did not completely fill the sky, so patches of light were moving across the landscape - in this photograph one illuminates the green area at far right along the shore and, more importantly, the Mono Craters beyond the far shore of the lake. And the vegetation around the lake was still green, or at least green enough to look alive in this light.

A woman walks down the street in Hamburg and gives a passing glance to skimpy underwear in a shop window, reminding her maybe of days in her memory.
Mono Lake is a large, shallow saline soda lake in Mono County, California, formed at least 760,000 years ago as a terminal lake in an endorheic basin. The lack of an outlet causes high levels of salts to accumulate in the lake. These salts also make the lake water alkaline.

Located in California's spectacular Eastern Sierra, Mono Lake is an oasis in the dry Great Basin and a vital habitat for millions of migratory and nesting birds.
Was in Whole Foods and noticed this display of Romanesco Broccoli. Besides this being an obvious candidate for mono color, I was taken with the spiral patterns of the vegetable itself. I believe I used a photo of one of these a couple of years ago for a Photo Forte assignment on Patterns. I believe Anne said the pattern on the veggie was a Fractal Pattern. I cropped out some distractions from an adjacent display. I also sharpened some to accentuate the patterns.
somewhere near Mareeba on the Atherton Tablelands in far northern Queensland..a well cultivated sugar plantation..the contrasts were the first thing that drew my attention..then walking into the rows of cane the converging rows leading to the mountain with the mist and clouds spilling over the top..well what do you do..you grab the moment because it may not last that long..there was a bit of a wind driving a light rain..I just loved the way the clouds appeared mono and the mist moved and changed direction..this is a 6 frame panoramic and I am very happy with the way the stitching program handled the converging lines and the cane moving around..cheers to all..
How can anyone visit the Mammoth Lakes region and not visit Mono Lake at Sunset or Sunrise? This is a stitch of 4 photos, stitched and cropped with Photoshop
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
Mono Lake is an alkaline and hypersaline lake in California, United States that is a critical nesting habitat for several bird species and is an unusually productive ecosystem.
Mono Lake is believed to have formed at least 760,000 years ago, dating back to the Long Valley eruption. Sediments located below the ash layer hint that Mono Lake could be a remnant of a larger and older lake that once covered a large part of Nevada and Utah, making it among the oldest lakes in North America.
Mono Lake is a terminal lake in a watershed fed from melting runoff with no outlet. Dissolved salts in the runoff thus remain in the lake and raise the pH and the salt concentration.
Mono Lake is in a geologically active area at the north end of the Mono-Inyo Crater volcanic chain of the Long Valley Caldera. The geological activity is caused by faulting at the base of the Sierra Nevada, and is associated with the crustal stretching of the Basin and Range Province.
Volcanic activity continues in the Mono Lake vicinity: the most recent eruption occurred 250 years ago at Negit Island in Mono Lake. Panum Crater (on the south shore of the lake) is an excellent example of a combined rhyolite dome and cinder cone.
