The Monastery of Batalha literally the Monastery of the Battle, is a Dominican convent in the municipality of Batalha, in the district of Leiria, Portugal. Originally, and officially known, as the Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitória it was erected in commemoration of the 1385 Battle of Aljubarrota, and would serve as the burial church of the 15th-Century Aviz dynasty of Portuguese royalty. It is one of the best and original examples of Late Gothic architecture in Portugal, intermingled with the Manueline style.
Rila Monastery was founded in the tenth century during the First Bulgarian Empire by followers of the hermit Saint Ivan of Rila. Little survives of its earliest period, but it's quite an enormous and impressive multistory walled complex, complete with central church, defensive tower, cells for hundreds of monks, and massive facilities to support the economic functions of the monastery, which included milling, forestry, agriculture, beekeeping, fish farming and supporting the pilgrim trade.
Over the centuries the monastery was alternately plundered and protected by the conquering Ottomans. In 1833 most of it was destroyed in an accidental fire, but it was rebuilt with Ottoman permission. Today it mixes Byzantine, Moorish, Ottoman, Baroque and medieval defensive architectural styles in a manner that is somehow coherent and recognizable as the synthesis called Bulgarian Revival.
It is still an active pilgrimage destination and monastery, albeit with a very small complement of monks. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and, of course, a popular tourist destination. Rila Monastery, Rila Mountains, Bulgaria.
Armenian is known for its old stone monasteries many of which date back over a thousand years. In most cases, all that remains are the churches since no one practices the monastic life anymore. This is still an operating church that serves the local villages. This is the Church of St. Gregory the Enlightener.

The Harichavank (Armenian: Հառիճավանք; transliterated as Harijavank or Harichavank) is a 7th century Armenian monastery located near the village of Harich (Armenian: Հառիճ) in the Shirak Province of Armenia. The village is 3 km southeast of the town of Artik. Zakare II and Ivane I on the east facade at Harichavank, Armenia, 1201. They wear the contemporary costume, with tall sharbush hat and kaftans. Harichavank is known as one of the most famous monastic centers in Armenia, and it was especially renowned for its school and scriptorium. Archaeological excavations of 1966 indicate that Harich was in existence during the 2nd century BC, and was one of the more well-known fortress towns in Armenia. The oldest part of this Armenian monastery is the Church of St. Gregory the Enlightener (Սբ. Գրիգոր Լուսավորիչ); it is a domed structure that is usually placed in the category of so-called "Mastara-style" churches (named after the fifth century church of St. Hovhannes in the village of Mastara, in the southern part of Shirak). The founding date of the monastery is unknown, but it was probably built no later than the 7th century, when St. Gregory was erected.
While visiting Mount Kōya, we stayed with monks in a monastery (Rengejo-in). Highlights included sleeping on the floor, cold vegetable meals, and sandals about 5 sizes too small. But overall it was an excellent experience.
When I first walked into this room in the Alcobaça Monastery, Alcobaça Portugal ....I thought this had been their restroom...But, turns out it was the kitchen! 😁...I thought they slid pots into the square holes...turns out the pots went into the round holes and they built a fire underneath...
The rebuilt "Brâncoveanu" Monastery is located in Sambata de Sus, town situated on Sambata (Saturday) river in Fagaras area, Romania. The history of Brâncoveanu Monastery started in the 17th century, when Preda Brâncoveanu erected a wood church. Constantin Brâncoveanu, the ruler of Wallachia (1688-1714), rebuilt a monastery in stone on the wood church place, around the year 1696 in an attempt to strengthen the unity of Orthodoxy in front of the new Habsburg Catholic rule in Transylvania. Constantin Brâncoveanu founded a school for writers and secretaries, a fresco painting workshop and a small printing house, which transformed the monastery into a strong social, cultural and religious center. Just west of U-Bein Bridge, this sprawling monastery is a pleasantly meditative place for most of the day. But at about 11am, busloads of tourists arrive to gawp while the whole monastery sits down to eat, their silence pierced by the endless rattle of camera shutters.

In the 8th century two brothers, David and Constantine, led a rebellion against occupying Arabs. This failed and they were captured, tortured and killed after refusing to convert to Islam. Tradition holds that their bodies were thrown into the Tskaltsitela River and that lions dragged their remains to a hill overlooking the river. Motsameta means "place of the martyrs" and King Bagrat IV (ruled 1027-1072) had the Motsameta Monastery built on the hill after they were recognized as Saints by the church. Relics of the brothers are kept at the monastery.

So to the 4th and final monastery for the day. In fact not a monastery at all anymore as it was converted to a nunnery in 1961. It’s the most accessible, but not what you’d call step free. It closes for a few hours after lunch unlike the others as well as one day a week. All that makes it the busiest with tour groups.
