Looking up from the bottom of an ornate staircase inside an abandoned monastery in Belgium.

Fortunately, this building is being actively reused preserving much of its architectural features and look. I believe condominiums are also in the works as is quite often the case these days.

Rongbuk Monastery lies near the base of the north side of Mount Everest at 5,009 metres (16,434 ft) above sea level, at the end of the Dzakar Chu valley. Rongbuk is claimed to be the highest-elevation monastery in the world.

However, the true highest monastery in the world is Drirapuk Monastery in Ngari Prefecture, at an altitude of 5,072 metres (16,640 ft).

Some of my friends have expressed the desire of seeing more photos of this picturesque monastery so here is another one from the other side. This is the side of the entrance actually.

Unfortunately photography is not allowed inside any of the old monasteries so I can share only photos of the outside.

The Shwenandaw Monastery lies in the city of Mandalay, the capital of the Mandalay Region, Myanmar. The monastery was built by the Burmese king Thibaw Min (Ruled 1878-1885). Originally a residence of his father, King Mindon Min (ruled 18 Feb 1853-01 Oct 1878), the building was dismantled and reconstructed as a monastery after King Mindon Min's death in 1878.

I have uploaded pictures of Kye monastery earlier also but I thought this one really captures the vastness and grandeur of the Spiti landscape well.

Arnota Monastery is located in Costeşti commune, Vâlcea County, Oltenia, and it is one of Romania’s most valuable monuments, famous for its architectural style, sculptures and paintings. Initially a monastery for monks, today it is (since 1999) a convent for nuns. It is consecrated to Saint Archangels Michael and Gabriel and its dedication day is 8 November.

The monastery was erected by ruling prince Matei Basarab (1632-1654), between 1634-1636. Under the church of the monastery were found the traces of an older church. It is said that the ruler Matei Basarab decided to build this monastery on the site of the household where he found shelter in a difficult time, when he was chased by the Turks.

The monastery was renovated by ruling prince Constantin Brâncoveanu (1689-1714) between 1705 and 1706. He also added a porch with a belfry, and replaced the iconostasis and the front door carved in chestnut wood. He ordered the painting to be restored, with special precautions not to damage the previous layers.

Capriana Monastery is one of the oldest in Moldova, mentioned in documents dating back to 1420. The "winter church" shown here was built in 1903.

Stormy days are uncomfortable for taking photos. The umbrella takes hold of one hand and consumes a significant portion of attention. The mind is divided, preoccupied with protecting the camera from moisture. Yet, I adore its light. It can change numerous times in just 10 minutes. This photo would not have worked on a clear day. It was nearly noon. And yet, the light was enchantingly whimsical. It constantly shifted based on the thickness and distribution of the clouds.

When I spotted a rise in front of the monastery, I knew instinctively that it was the spot to capture the photo. When I observed the color and texture of the stones present, I thought that if a good photo didn't emerge, it would be my own fault. There was an intriguing foreground, a prominent subject, and the exceptional backdrop of the lake.

It was an ideal scene for employing a panoramic approach. I approached the foreground closely, selected a 24mm lens, calculated the hyperfocal distance, exposed to prevent the sky from being overexposed, and took 6 vertical shots. I processed most of it in Camera Raw.

Founded by Despot Stefan Lazarević between 1406[2] and 1418. The church is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. It is one of the most significant monuments of medieval Serbian culture and it belongs to the "Morava school". The monastery is surrounded by massive walls and towers.

Sucevița Monastery is an Eastern Orthodox convent situated in the Northeastern part of Romania. It is situated near the Suceviţa River, in the village Sucevița, 18 km away from the city of Rădăuţi, Suceava County. It is located in the southern part of the historical region of Bukovina (northwestern Moldavia). It was built in 1585 by Ieremia Movilă, Gheorghe Movilă and Simion Movilă.[1]

The architecture of the church contains both Byzantine and Gothic elements, and some elements typical to other painted churches of northern Moldavia. Both interior and exterior walls are covered by mural paintings, which are of great artistic value and depict biblical episodes from the Old and New Testament. The paintings date from around 1601, which makes Sucevița one of the last monasteries to be decorated in the famous Moldavian style of exterior paintings.

The interior court of the monastic ensemble is almost square (100 by 104 meters) and is surrounded by high (6 m), wide (3 m) walls. There are several other defensive structures within the ensemble, including four towers (one in each corner). Sucevița was a princely residence as well as a fortified monastery. The thick walls today shelter a museum that presents an outstanding collection of historical and art objects. The tomb covers of Ieremia and Simion Movilă – rich portraits embroidered in silver thread – together with ecclesiastical silverware, books and illuminated manuscripts, offer eloquent testimony to Sucevița's importance first as a manuscript workshop, then as a printing center.

In 2010, the monastery has been inscribed by UNESCO on its list of World Heritage Sites, as one of the Painted churches of Moldavia.

This Orthodox monastery is one of six remaining from the 14th - 16th century that can still be entered. Originally there were 24 but most are now just ruins. Locally known as the Monastic City of Rocks, The Holy Meteora to give it the true name is near Kalambaka in Greece. It's a trip worth making if you're fit enough to climb the many steps. Best viewed large :)) This image has now been made into an on-line jigsaw puzzle, so if that's your thing and you fancy giving it a try you'll find it on www.jigsawexplorer.com

Many thanks for your views and fav's, I love reading your comments and appreciate every one :))

The light streaming throught the white and yellow stained glass acted as a "spotlight" to hightlight the Monastery's Alter. This is a combination of two photos. One for the Stained Glass and the other for the rest of the Alter area. I hand blended these two photos together using Photoshop.

Nikodim erected the Tismana Monastery in Romania, dedicated to the Most Holy Virgin. Saint Nikodim died on 26 December 1406 and was buried in the narthex of the church of Tismana Monastery. His relics were kept there for a while, but later they were hidden in an unknown place because of the hostilities of the time. Only the forefinger of his right hand and his lead pectoral cross remained at Tismana. (Wikipedia)
