The beautifully stone built Agios Ioannis Monastery has many features like this. Small but so effective.

Tismana Monastery, Romania

"Tismana Monastery, together with its medieval walls and angular bulwarks, lies on the Starmina Mountain being surrounded by forests, 30 km away from Targu Jiu. The Geto-Dacian toponym “tismena” meant “fortress”. (www.romanianmonasteries.org/other-monasteries/tismana)

Nikodim Tismanski, an Orthodox monk scribe and translator who was the founder of monasteries, one in Serbia and two in Romania, was canonized by the Romanian Orthodox Church in 1955. Nikodim erected the Tismana Monastery in Romania, dedicated to the Most Holy Virgin. Saint Nikodim died on 26 December 1406 and was buried in the narthex of the church of Tismana Monastery. His relics were kept there for a while, but later they were hidden in an unknown place because of the hostilities of the time. Only the forefinger of his right hand and his lead pectoral cross remained at Tismana. (Wikipedia)

Inspired by Tibetan Monasteries, by Indian Architecture, and by other Chinese and Japanese buildings, this is my final (maybe?) entry to the 2020 Summer Joust, and probably my heaviest build ever. It took two whole people to carry it down the stairs, and a great deal of stress! On me and on the bricks. I think some people will wonder at the color choices, but I wanted to stay as faithful as possible to Samye Monastery, and even go further out there, with the colors, so I braved it, and here's what it turned out like.

In front we have a couple pillars of Ashoka with several ancient edicts inscribed at their bases.

In the center front is the gate through which the monks enter and exit the complex.

On the sides in the front we have some Arabic Indian inspired buildings with cells for the monks to meditate in.

Then behind we have three buildings with the living quarters, and the utilitarian portions of the complex.

Behind that is the central temple, with several stories and some tiny monk cells hanging on the left and the right towards the front of it. The debating halls are in the lowest story of the center keep.

Lastly, in the rear corners we have a couple of Nagara style temples, with Bhudist statues overlaid in gold.

Two weeks after starting, I finished. This little book I read when I was a kid taught me to finish what I'd started. It's a good motto for a LEGO builder, haha. Thank God I was able to get satisfactory pictures of this heavy fragile contraption. I am very grateful, since I know so many things could have gone wrong xD . All the glory to God!

I hope you like it :) .

Cozia Monastery, erected close to Căciulata by Mircea the Elder in 1388 and housing his tomb, is one of the most valuable monuments of national medieval art and architecture in Romania.

The name of the monastery is of Cuman origin and it means "walnut grove", from Turkic word koz, meaning walnut.[1] The original name of the place was the Romanian equivalent, Nucetul, but already in 1387, a document of Mircea cel Bătrân uses the current name.[1]

The fortified cloister dates from the foundation (1388) and is the only in Byzantine style preserved in Romania. The appearance of the church was modified under Neagoe Basarab (1517), Şerban Cantacuzino and Constantin Brâncoveanu (1707), who added a veranda, a new fountain, a chapel and a watch tower, adding to its architecture the 'brâncovenesc style'. The Monastery of Batalha (Portuguese: Mosteiro da Batalha), literally the Monastery of the Battle, is a Dominican convent in the municipality of Batalha, in the district of Leiria, in the Centro Region of Portugal. Originally, and officially known, as the Monastery of Saint Mary of the Victory, it was erected in commemoration of the 1385 Battle of Aljubarrota, and would serve as the burial church of the 15th-Century Aviz dynasty of Portuguese royalty. It is one of the best and original examples of Late Gothic architecture in Portugal, intermingled with the Manueline style.

Construction began during the reign of Alexander Ypsilanti (1774–1782) and was completed by Prince Nicholas Mavrogenes (1786–1790) during the Phanariote age also called the Greek origin government of Wallachia. It was built in neoclassical style, and was considered very large for that time: 43 meters long and 18 high, with walls 1 and 2 meters thick. The structure was completed under the rule of Mavrogenes between April 1786 and September 1790.

Schoenthal Monastery, first mentioned in 1145, includes one of the oldest churches in Switzerland. It is considered a showpiece of Romanesque architecture. Its western façade features ashlar masonry, a portal with a depiction of a lamb carrying a cross, and an arch supported by a lion baring its teeth on one side, and by a man on the other. The inscription on the arch reads: HIC EST RODO.

Of the murals on the inside of the church, a depiction of St. Christopher has been preserved above the gateway to the cloister dating from about 1310/20. Behind the eastern façade, fragments can be seen of an angel swinging a censer; these date from around 1430. The bell in the steeple was cast in Aarau in the 15th century. The deconsecrated monastery was used for various commercial purposes over a period of 500 years. As of 1986, the new owner had extensive renovations carried out in collaboration with the canton’s departments of archaeology and the preservation of historical monuments. The latter recommended using the traditional plaster made of slaked lime.
