OUT-OF-SYNC

THE PARADOXES OF TIME

The exhibition focuses on works in which different temporalities are combined, developing a paradoxical relation of time. One of the purposes is to simultaneously consider the key role that this notion has played in the work of a number of artists who started their career in the 60s, including Bruce Nauman, Dan Graham and Valie Export, and its presence in the practice of the younger generation, such as Manon de Boer, Laurent Montaron and Anri Sala.

Artists: David Claerbout, Tony Conrad, Manon de Boer, Valie Export, Marco Godinho, Dan Graham, David Lamelas, Laurent Montaron, Bruce Nauman, Anri Sala, Hiroshi Sugimoto

Cultural programme:

Conference by Elie During “La discordance des temps - Einstein et l’art contemporain” - 29/03/2011 6.30pm

Concert “Out-of-Sync”. Works by Steve Reich. With United Instruments of Lucilin - 19/05/2011 6.30pm

SUCHAN KINOSHITA

STICK EMPATHY

Suchan Kinoshita first worked for the theatre, as an actress, director and as a decorator. She uses this experience, as well as her musical background, to produce installations which invite the public to an interactive experience. These installations, apart from their distinctive poetry, always take in account the surroundings they are put in, while mixing sound, screening and construction.

SUZANNE LAFONT

SITUATION COMEDY

Suzanne Lafont presents her "Comedy Situation" project. The starting point of this project is a work of art by General Idea "Manipulating the Self Pamphlet" (1971), for which the Canadian artists' collective had passed an advertisement instructing people to carry out a distorsion - to seize your cheek, your neck or your chin with the hand, while passing your arm behind your neck - and the request for a photographic documentation in return.

21c (twenty fist century) Museum Hotel in Bentonville opened in February 2013. It is a very moderne hotel building which doubles as an art museum open to the the public 24/7. The $28 million hotel/restaurant/meeting center/museum is 1 block from Bentonville's courthouse square and a 15 minute trail walk from the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.

Bentonville’s 21c is much like the flagship hotel - the 21c Hotel & Museum in Louisville, Kentucky. It was designed by the same architect, Deborah Berke & Partners of New York. The firm also designed the James Hotel (now the Saguaro) Scottsdale, Arizona in 2004.

The owners are Kentucky art collectors Laura Lee Brown and husband Steve Wilson. Ms. Brown, is the 72-year-old great-granddaughter of the founder of liquor company Brown-Forman, whose brands include Jack Daniel's and Southern Comfort.Mr. Wilson, is a 65-year-old former public-relations officer for four Kentucky governors. The project was built in conjunction with the Walton family and the nonprofit Bentonville Revitalization Inc.

Emmanuel Gardinier was the opening general manager of the 21c Museum Hotel. Previously Gardinier was managing director for the Planters Inn in Charleston, S.C.

Art is everywhere at 21c. There are pieces in each of the rooms and suites. Art is found in the most unexpected of places, including the fitness center, which features the piece “Fat Batman” suspended from the ceiling.

Each 21c location features large penguin statues designed by Cracking Art Group of Italy throughout its property. A different color at each museum/hotel (green in Bentonville), the penguin is a staple for 21c. The penguin statues, which are “mysteriously” moved throughout the property, are one of only a few permanent art fixtures in the museum, which changes exhibitions every six months.

Like the surrounding counties, artifacts recovered from archeological sites suggest that humans have inhabited Houston County for 2,000 to 3,000 years. The Caddo culture flourished in the area between 1000 and 1600 AD, and the Alabama-Coushatta, Cherokee, and Tejas Indians also lived in the area.

The first recorded European exploration of the region was by French explorer René Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, in the 1680s, but it is thought that a Spanish expedition led by Luis de Moscoso Alvarado might have reached the area in the 1540s.

The earliest permanent settlers in the area were brothers-in-law Daniel McLean and John Sheridan, who settled near the site of modern day Augusta in 1821. Mexican land grants were made as early as the late 1820s. One of the first to receive on was Jacob Masters, who settled ten mile northeast of modern day Crockett.

In 1837, the Texas Legislature formed Houston County from Nacogdoches County, naming it for Republic of Texas president Sam Houston. At the time, it included land that would later become Trinity and Anderson Counties, as well as part of Henderson County. Land was donated for the county seat by Andrew E. Gossett, who named the town after his father’s friend David Crockett (he of coonskin cap and Alamo fame).

The county seat of Crockett was incorporated in December of 1837, and a post office established in early 1838. By 1855, there were several schools, and by 1857, there were two newspapers. In 1872, the Houston and Great Northern Railroad reached the town, spurring a growth of the lumber industry. By 1885, the town had a bank, an opera house, churches for three denominations, and a weekly newspaper. In 1886, the school that later became known as the Mary Allen Junior College was opened for the education of Black girls.

The 1939 Moderne style courthouse building is the county’s fifth. The first was a fortified log cabin, built in 1838, that was used as shelter during skirmishes with Native Americans during the early years of the county. Courthouses built in 1851 and 1871 both burned. The fourth courthouse was built in 1883. The 1939 courthouse was a WPA project, costing $120,000 ($2,704,225 in today’s money) to construct.
