Mixed reality, a form of altering general reality, is a concept, complete with tools, invented by Microsoft.

My entry into the field of mixed reality is this video, I Dream, Mr. Milk Bottle Flies his Corporate Plane in a Break for Freedom. The basic reality is captured in the video backdrop, which features me, doing really minimal acting, coaching the Bottle, and then falling asleep.

Mr. Milk Bottle, a rubber hose cartoon character I invented in the mid-nineties, or shortly thereafter, has always been a 3D model. He is the spokesperson for a fictional corporation called The Badge of Quality which is involved in art, entertainment, sports, politics, everything, just like the Disney Corporation. In this episode, the Bottle flies his Corporate Plane (which looks like a magic carpet, but is not, it’s a Corporate Plane) into the boundary rectangle of the image, attempting to break through to the other side. There just has to be more to Life, don’t you think?

Walking, not Running, and Getting Nowhere - the first mixed reality exploration. Mapping of my walk as plotted live from a 3G mobile.

----------------

The intention here is to explore an immersive experience for my avatar and myself as my avatar in Second Life (SL) through a first person point of view.

My avatar is set to animate a walk on the spot, on top of a screen broadcasting a live video feed of a walk from 'real' life (RL). Alongside is a heads up display (HUD) showing my RL position as the walk occurs. My RL walk is source media/experience for my avatar, augmenting its SL experience and inverting what is often the purpose of virtual worlds, augmenting our RL experience (i.e. through SL social networking etc.)

The result is a mixed reality experience for my avatar, walking in a visual space beyond its own yet with no control or actual locomotion, extended as a result of streaming lag, augmented in some ways yet futile in others.

The apparatus of the apparition becomes apparent in this time lapse view of the development of a fingerloose (Pentadactylus polymorpha).

During this Kidz Connect workshop, we connected students at the Academy of Urban Planning in Bushwick (Brooklyn), New York, with students at the IVKO Montessori School in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Using a mixed reality combination of Skype for real-time video chatting, and the virtual world Metaplace, the students got to know each other, while building a 'virtual street fair' together in Metaplace, in which each student mapped images of their interests and neighborhood onto street fair booths. We had a virtual street fair that integrated the NY and Amsterdam students' booths.

In this screenshot, you see the Metaplace street fair booths in the background and the Skype video conversation in the forefront. The students worked in Metaplace together while being able to see and interact with each other in the Skype window as well.

Note: The user-generated virtual world Metaplace closed down on January 1, 2010 at 11:59pm EST. While Metaplace was still open, it was possible to visit Kidz Connect world at metaplace.com/KidzConnect/play. Metaplace is no longer accessible.

Soooo here I'm trying to do my homework, and I noticed a new to me export option in PS 3D, "Aero", so 4 hours down that rabbit hole, and it seems to be an iApp that works on mostly latest greatest iPad/iPhones, it wasn't supposed to work on mine and it eventually did but super slow, basically I was able to export a 3D object from PS into the Adobe storage cloud, and import it into an iPhone App, it places your 3D object (or one from it's library) into the view from your iPhone camera after generating a point cloud/3D set to figure out the floor that allows the 3D character to be anchored to, if you have one of those iPhones with lots of lenses and super fast internet I suspect it could almost be in real time. The last time I tried something like this was in Matt and Sams VR class here at PCC, using Unity and Vuforia, here's a link to that if this sounds interesting to you.https://flic.kr/p/2gbosDL

About Invisible Threads:

Invisible Threads is a mixed reality performance installation created by Eyebeam artists Jeff Crouse and Stephanie Rothenberg. The project explores the growing intersection between labor, emerging virtual economies and real life commodities through the creation of a designer jeans sweatshop in the metaverse Second Life. Simulating a real life manufacturing facility that includes hiring Second Life “workers” to produce real world jeans sold for profit, the project provides an insider’s view into current modes of global, telematic production.
