Homily012923- Mt 5:1-12a

“Christ died for all, so that those who live should not live for themselves, but for him who died for them” (2 Corinthians 5:15)

We hear the beatitudes quite often. We are taught them in our catechism classes, and we frequently hear them read at Mass. They are as familiar as milk in the fridge, but what are they? Technically, they are eight blessings that make up the Sermon on the Mount given by Jesus. They articulate simply the reward for a good action-a right choice. For example, there is a common phrase “that it is better to give then receive.” The proof of this statement is found in the action of giving. It is a choice, that begins with a “yes” to do it. Why else do parents surprise their children with gifts on Christmas morning. The blessings of the beatitudes work in a similar way. When we say “yes” to Jesus, to follow him and HIS way, the stage is set to receive the blessings. It is as simple as that. Of course, what sounds straightforward and easy, is never like that in reality.

The word beatitude comes from the word beatidudo which is Latin for blessedness. Each beatitude begins with the phrase “blessed are” which implies a state of peace, happiness and well-being. In Christ’s day it would have a meaning of “divine joy and perfect happiness. In addition there is an implied reward that all would be well in the future. Jesus’ intent is to bring a bit of the Kingdom of God on earth.

The action, on our part, is the decision to do a good thing, which comes first. Disciples of Christ understand this well.

When we say “Yes” to God, a space opens up in time…and a mystery unfolds in each and every moment of our lives. It is in this place that we have the potential to experience what our Gospel declares to us today. It is a unique experience for each of us. In our YES, in our experiencing and doing what Jesus does, we experience the “peace beyond understanding” which is the fruit of the Beatitudes. When we are given these graces, we recognize them…and ponder them in our heart.

Recently, I have read a book, called “Icon of Trust-Mary in the Gospels of Luke and John.” It follows Mary from her initial “Yes” and the many “Yes’s” flowing from her life as she shadows her Son.

“Mary’s childlike trust consists in giving a full yes to God — without knowing everything this yes implies. This complete yes is full of trust, not of detailed knowledge of what is to come.” “In front of God, she demonstrates the vigilance of someone ready to be surprised.”Mary is attentive, she is ready to say yes, and she is docile and humble in “ acknowledging the things she does not know and in trying to understand better the things she has already perceived and experienced; she is the perfect collaborator of God in the unfolding of His plan of salvation.”

I can remember my first “yes” to God. Since that first “yes”, I have learned that daily life consists of many yes’s. With each and every decision I make, big or small…that first “yes” becomes the context of all the yes’s that follow. My Christian walk, has been to follow Jesus. His gift of grace, which includes a peace beyond understanding, has accompanied me in the good and bad times of my life. In reflecting on my life, I can say that I have been blessed.

Brian Zahnd, a Christian author….paraphrases the beatitudes this way…

Blessed are those who are poor at being spiritual,

For the kingdom of heaven is well-suited for ordinary people.

Blessed are the depressed who mourn and grieve,

For they create space to encounter comfort from another.

Blessed are the gentle and trusting, who are not grasping and clutching,

For God will personally guarantee their share when heaven comes to earth.

Blessed are those who ache for the world to be made right,

For them the government of God is a dream come true.

Blessed are those who give mercy,

For they will get it back when they need it most.

Blessed are those who have a clean window in their soul,

For they will perceive God when and where others don’t.

Blessed are the bridge-builders in a war-torn world,

For they are God’s children working in the family business.

Blessed are those who are mocked and misunderstood for the right reasons,

For the kingdom of heaven comes to earth amidst such persecution.”

source: Brian Zahnd, “The Beatitudes”

Conclusion

Often, in our Christian walk, we struggle to find words to articulate to others why we have found our way of life purposeful and meaningful. The beatitudes are a beautiful display of of proverbs that describe beautifully what the state and outcome of living a sacrificial life is. This way of life begins when we invite Jesus into our hearts. It is not an easy life living as a Christian in the world today. But the peace, we hold in our hearts is worth every right choice we make to follow HIM. The rewards are experienced by us in this life and the life to come.

Black Vulture

(Coragyps atratus)

Australia's saltwater crocodile waits patiently on the banks of the South Alligator River, Kakadu National Park.

They are widespread across the northern Australia and can be found in salt and estuarine waters They are extremely territorial. They are the largest reptile in the world (mass) and can weigh over 1000 kg and grow to lengths of 6-7 metres but are more usually less than 5 m. Their jaws can exert a pressure of several tonnes. While they generally feed on smaller prey, they have been known to take cattle and horses and of course, unfortunate humans who make the mistake of swimming in croc infested waters or walking to close to the edge of such places.

While crocodile numbers in Australia are stable now, as with the fate of so much of our native wildlife, extensive hunting from the 1940s to the 1970s reduced them to critical numbers. Once crocodiles became a protected species and conservation programs followed, their numbers slowly recovered.

While I was traveling up North, I was surprised to learn of the simple method used to tell whether a water body is clear of crocodiles-The Rangers place a floating buoy at the mouth or entrance to the water body. If it has bite marks, they know a crocodile is present! Apparently they can't resist biting them.

Carl Zeiss Planar 50mm f1.8 has all advantages of Ultron sharpness and very good coating that still allows for a lot of micro contrast.

Micro-contrast is one of the most misunderstood and misspresented terms in photography. It probably commes from the fact that it has very little to do with the contrast of image itself. Except, in the most cases, the lenses with very strong contrast will suffer to produce any microcontrast.

Anyway, the way I understand it, microcontrast is ability of lens to render smooth and fine transition from one tonal value to another. Let say, how many different shades of gray (or any other chroma) it renders.

For minialist and abstract monochrome photography this richness of transition is very important. It is the element that gives a feeling to a photo.

Me and my truth, we sit in silence

Baby girl, it's just me and you

'Cause I don't wanna argue, but I don't wanna bite

My tongue,

I think I'd rather die

You got me misunderstood, but at least I look this good

We can't be friends

But I'd like to just pretend

You cling to your papers and pens

Wait until you like me again

PENTAX-05 TOY LENS TELE 18mm f:8

The PENTAX Q "Toy lenses" are tiny manual-focus primes with a fixed aperture. They were rather misunderstood and never caught on. I think that's a pity. If one takes the trouble, they can give beautiful results. They are NOT toys, and are anything but simple to use well. As with any equipment, you have to recognise the possibilities and respect the limitations.

With its focal-length equivalent to that of a 100mm lens on 35mm film, the TOY LENS TELE makes a nice little portrait lens with a pleasingly soft rendition.

~* World of Words *~

We live in a world of Words

Searching for the perfect way

to say what is deep inside.

Wanting to be heard,

When there are not eyes to see,

When there are not ears to hear,

When there are only our fingers

pressing out the words

Like feet stomping grapes to make fine wine.

We search deep within for the song of words

that resides deep within.

We hope and pray that someone will see them

As the melody we attempt to bring forth.

Music played with emotion can be felt by all.

Our words filled with ... Us,

trying so hard to convey what we feel deep inside,

So many ways to say the right thing,

So many ways to be misunderstood,

Can we make a melody

or only a song never understood?

Wasted in love, misunderstood

Baby, it's harder to breathe when you're gone

So I hold in my hands pictures of you

And dream of the day you were eating for two

All this love, I'm so choked up

I can feel you in my blood

All this lust for just one touch

I'm so scared to give you up

Valentine, my decline

Is so much better with you

Valentine, my decline

I'm always running to you

Valentine

Valentine

Crazy in love, daisy in bloom

Black hearts for pupils, I'm pacing the room

And I cover myself in tattoos of us

And dream of the day we embrace and combust

All this love, I'm so choked up

I can feel you in my blood

All this lust for just one touch

I'm so scared to give you up

Valentine, my decline

Is so much better with you

Valentine, my decline

I'm always running to you

All this love

All this love, all this love

All this love

I have gone out, a possessed witch,

haunting the black air, braver at night;

dreaming evil, I have done my hitch

over the plain houses, light by light:

lonely thing, twelve-fingered, out of mind.

A woman like that is not a woman, quite.

I have been her kind.

I have found the warm caves in the woods,

filled them with skillets, carvings, shelves,

closets, silks, innumerable goods;

fixed the suppers for the worms and the elves:

whining, rearranging the disaligned.

A woman like that is misunderstood.

I have been her kind.

I have ridden in your cart, driver,

waved my nude arms at villages going by,

learning the last bright routes, survivor

where your flames still bite my thigh

and my ribs crack where your wheels wind.

A woman like that is not ashamed to die.

I have been her kind.

“Climate change is sometimes misunderstood as being about changes in the weather. In reality, it is about changes in our very way of life.” - Paul Poleman

We have just spent a few days with our family that is a household with 3 children. They live in a big city and it was such a transition for us to deal with heavy traffic and a busy daily routine. I can't imagine where you would begin to make lifestyle changes to benefit our environment when the modern conveniences make life somewhat easier for many families. I must confess that any more significant changes I have made for the good of climate change have come after the kids left home and especially now that we are retired. I was able to convince my granddaughter to put away her electronics a few times to do a puzzle together and to go for a long walk. On that walk, she talked so much and I got to know her better.

This image of the beach was taken on our fall camping trip where we took our other grandchildren camping for several days. Hopefully, I can continue to find ways to remind them how important even a little bit of a lifestyle change can mean a lot in the whole scheme of things to keep peaceful places like this healthy. My thoughts are with all the people out west and east who are dealing with severe weather events.

The River Inn forms part of the border between (Upper) Austria and Germany (Bavaria). Here a view from the Bavarian side looking across to Schärding on the Austrian side.

Captured with my darling little Pentax Q (no bigger than a box of cigarettes) and the charming "Toy Lens Tele". At closer distances, this lens will produce images that are sharp enough, but beautifully soft. At infinity there's not an ounce of sharpness left! And yet, isn't it a beautiful image all the same? At normal viewing distances is the lack of sharpness disturbing? Or doesn't it give the image a painterly quality that a sharp lens simply could not imitate? Let me know what you think!

The image is much as it came out of the camera. The colours have been ever so slightly intensified, but I did my best to preserve the character of the image as the camera and lens recorded it.

My 'Vivien Leigh' pink variegated zonal geranium, acquired from the Hills District geranium show and exhibition, held at Ellerman Park, in Round Corner (Dural), north-western Sydney, during pre-Covid times.

This variegated geranium has been grown since 1951 when Vivien Leigh starred in 'A Streetcar Named Desire' and was an acclaimed British actress. In the 1950s this geranium won awards for its beauty, not unlike Vivien Leigh who was lauded for her beauty. The original grower of this geranium was a mega Vivien Leigh fan, besotted by her beauty and yet also aware of the bipolar that she suffered from, which made her notoriously difficult to work with.

He argued that the noted, but uniform, variegation of the petals represented the ironic beauty of a person who suffered sporadically from an illness that was, at that time, misunderstood.

She was nevertheless the ultimate star of the iconic film: 'Gone With The Wind'. Tragically she died in 1967, aged only 53, due to tuberculosis.

But this variegated pink zonal geranium continues on and is still grown today in many parts of the world. One little part of Vivien's memory thus rests here in Cherrybrook, in Sydney.

" "Mindstorm"

which I have been working for as a series for a few years.

When you are feeling low, isolated, misunderstood.

Look at your disturbed soul pretending it's never hurts,

the ocean of the pain's roar to sweep all the goodness from you so you can feel the bottom.

Like the wind & the tide, there are no keys to open the sea, keep you face over the surface to keep the breath.

When the sun's up your skin is dry, start feel it's in the past, then the life goes on, there's another day.

Don't know what will come tomorrow, beneath the surface there is mindstorm.

Wish the best for you."

Often misunderstood, they are ugly but they are beautiful.

The Iberian orca is one of the ocean's most feared predators, yet it is also one of the most misunderstood. Popular culture often paints orcas as ruthless killers, but in reality they are highly intelligent, social animals that live in close family groups and rely on cooperation rather than aggression.

But maybe.... I should be swept up by a tornado and carried away to a place far, far away. Or possibly, I already have been and I am living in some kind of a parallel universe where everything goes wrong and there are just no explanations for the ridiculous mistakes I make and the things that happen around me. Yeah... that must be it....

And the words.... "Oh no, I've said too much" come to mind... AGAIN!!! I remember when I was in Maine and I told my brother-in-law how many pictures I took of my feet while sitting on the rocks on the coast and his response was... " I don't think you should tell people that." Well.... I think that could also be applied to some of the stories I end up telling people that I don't know well enough to be telling these stories to. And then.... let's drive the final nail into the coffin by saying.... "Oh, I have a towel you can borrow".... and popping my trunk open to reveal..... several arrows, with things tied to them.... hearts and feathers and signs.... many boxes of wooden printers letters, a step stool, an assortment of flashlights and tools... and ... some kind of large animal skull...

Misunderstood... that's it.... I'm just misunderstood....yup.... my ears are going to be ringing tomorrow.... I'm counting on it. *Sigh*

A cool room, almost too cold. There are smooth cement brick walls and two barred windows. The cobblestone floor is flaked with dried blood. Harsh lighting floods through the windows and flourescent lights on the ceiling, revealing the grotesque scene below.

The "artist" speaks, fingering his tools. He speaks more to himself than to his victim.

"I am not insane. I am misunderstood. Society calls me a monster, but it is they who are monsters. No one understands art."

Somewhere, the sun shines on green grass, oblivious to the events transpiring.

Everyone else is doing the mad scientist thing, so I figured I'd grab that last seat on the bandwagon.

1Z66 Victoria - Brighton over the Ouse Valley Viaduct, a posh Pullman day out at a cool £528 a head, including drinks, dinner and a lecture from Michael Portillo. The viaduct was completed in 1842 and is a fine structure.

I respected the landowners signs not to drone the shot (well the signs misunderstood the law, the landowner doesn't own the airspace so can't take action for flying a drone over the viaduct, but does hold the rights, even on a public footpath, for using the land from where I'd have to take off). In any case, probably a better image from the ground.

This is a cool little izakaya I’ve had my eye on for quite a while. When I finally managed to stop by, they told me they’d be closing the next month due to eviction from the building, which will be torn down.

I tried to come back on three evenings for one last hangout and to hopefully get a photo of the owner, but they were closed each time. Had I misunderstood (highly likely) the closing date? Had they lied to me about the date because they didn’t want me coming back?! (I hope not, but possibly).

It turned out that the owner decided to only stay open afternoons for these last few weeks. Most of her customers are day drinkers anyway.

And, she wasn’t mad at me or anything. In fact, she was only too happy to pose for a portrait. But instead of making my usual midnight memento, I had to shoot in daylight(!) I’m not used to that, but after a few high balls it all ended up working out.

Thank you Ashibi!

Heavy is the head perched upon the brachiosaurus-long neck. Rarely do I meet an individual who is fond of the Canada Goose (Branta canadensis). Even resolute bird-lovers seem to curl their lips when these large honkers waddle near. While it may be difficult to imagine today, since every time we step outdoors it's as if a Canada goose is waiting to greet us with a blat and high-feather-five, populations were dangerously low at the start of the 20th century. Laws were enacted to protect and even reintroduce them into parts of the country from which they'd vanished. Fast forward to 2015 and they can be found in every continental North American state and province at one time or another. And they're like a good episode of Cheers...everyone knows their name.

The little house caught the sun as more rain clouds came in. In the magnificence of Killary Fjord (Ireland's only fjord! or is it a fjard?) it put human structures into context

Eastern Copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix)

Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area, Georgia, U.S.A.

A few years ago, I captured this shot near my favorite running trail—an area where Copperheads were a familiar sight during my afternoon runs and bike rides. One evening, curiosity led me back with my headlamp and camera in hand. It was pitch black outside, and within a couple of hours, I found two quietly moving through the grass. For this shot, I laid flat in the grass, using my 50mm prime and a flash to light the scene. (You can see the reflection of my flash in his elliptical pupil). Despite their reputation as venomous vipers, Copperheads are remarkably calm when given space. I've always found them to be mesmerizing—beautiful, elusive, and deeply misunderstood.

Yes, you read it right, my last ferris wheel in the series. Some may have misunderstood it as 'last will'. That can't be possible as I don't have any wealth to pass on except my photos in flickr. lol
