We have just spent a few days with our family that is a household with 3 children. They live in a big city and it was such a transition for us to deal with heavy traffic and a busy daily routine. I can't imagine where you would begin to make lifestyle changes to benefit our environment when the modern conveniences make life somewhat easier for many families. I must confess that any more significant changes I have made for the good of climate change have come after the kids left home and especially now that we are retired. I was able to convince my granddaughter to put away her electronics a few times to do a puzzle together and to go for a long walk. On that walk, she talked so much and I got to know her better.

This image of the beach was taken on our fall camping trip where we took our other grandchildren camping for several days. Hopefully, I can continue to find ways to remind them how important even a little bit of a lifestyle change can mean a lot in the whole scheme of things to keep peaceful places like this healthy. My thoughts are with all the people out west and east who are dealing with severe weather events.

The Iberian orca is one of the ocean's most feared predators, yet it is also one of the most misunderstood. Popular culture often paints orcas as ruthless killers, but in reality they are highly intelligent, social animals that live in close family groups and rely on cooperation rather than aggression.

My 'Vivien Leigh' pink variegated zonal geranium, acquired from the Hills District geranium show and exhibition, held at Ellerman Park, in Round Corner (Dural), north-western Sydney, during pre-Covid times.

This variegated geranium has been grown since 1951 when Vivien Leigh starred in 'A Streetcar Named Desire' and was an acclaimed British actress. In the 1950s this geranium won awards for its beauty, not unlike Vivien Leigh who was lauded for her beauty. The original grower of this geranium was a mega Vivien Leigh fan, besotted by her beauty and yet also aware of the bipolar that she suffered from, which made her notoriously difficult to work with.

He argued that the noted, but uniform, variegation of the petals represented the ironic beauty of a person who suffered sporadically from an illness that was, at that time, misunderstood.

She was nevertheless the ultimate star of the iconic film: 'Gone With The Wind'. Tragically she died in 1967, aged only 53, due to tuberculosis.

But this variegated pink zonal geranium continues on and is still grown today in many parts of the world. One little part of Vivien's memory thus rests here in Cherrybrook, in Sydney.

My dear Miss Frost:

As I am sure you are aware, my arrival in town has been delayed. I owe you an explanation, and I would beg a favor of you, should you determine that our interests align in this matter.

I was enticed to emigrate to the Kasiopeia Isles by my research partner, Dr. Alphonse Moreau, late of the University of Ingolstadt. He has - or perhaps “had” would be more accurate – a research site in one of the Isles where he observes experimental subjects in the wild. He told me that he had obtained substantial funding, enough for a large institute, and that the Township would be an ideal location, scientifically inclined and far from the sort of busybodies who plague those working on the frontiers of knowledge.

Unfortunately, at my stopover in Hong Kong I received word that the “funding” was the anticipated payout from investment in a silver mine in Ecuador, which turned out to be entirely fraudulent. Worse, he had fallen afoul of the British authorities in Australia, and will be serving twenty to fifty years of hard labour for various *entirely misunderstood* experiments in applied biological sciences (and, I ask you, how could one of the charges be “cruelty to animals” if the creatures in question were the result of crossbreeding with humans? The law truly *is* an ass!)

Thus, I find myself the owner of a rather large building in your town, but otherwise quite destitute.

What I would propose is that I donate the building to the Frost Academy for use as classrooms and laboratories, and that in return you hire me on as an instructor in the Extraordinary Sciences. Perhaps, if it is not a step too bold, Head of Department? I would dedicate myself quite eagerly to your students, maintaining only a small (and entirely underfunded!) research agenda of my own.

With a small advance on my pay, I would be able to purchase a ticket for the last leg of my trip, and would be able to join you well before the start of your new term.

P.S. I don’t know if my erstwhile partner informed anyone, but he has shipped a few cadavers to our premises, for anatomical research purposes. So long as they remain chilled, they should be no bother to anyone in town.

"Oh, I have a towel you can borrow".... and popping my trunk open to reveal..... several arrows, with things tied to them.... hearts and feathers and signs.... many boxes of wooden printers letters, a step stool, an assortment of flashlights and tools... and ... some kind of large animal skull...

Misunderstood... that's it.... I'm just misunderstood....yup.... my ears are going to be ringing tomorrow.... I'm counting on it. *Sigh*

1Z66 Victoria - Brighton over the Ouse Valley Viaduct, a posh Pullman day out at a cool £528 a head, including drinks, dinner and a lecture from Michael Portillo. The viaduct was completed in 1842 and is a fine structure.

I respected the landowners signs not to drone the shot (well the signs misunderstood the law, the landowner doesn't own the airspace so can't take action for flying a drone over the viaduct, but does hold the rights, even on a public footpath, for using the land from where I'd have to take off). Heavy is the head perched upon the brachiosaurus-long neck. Rarely do I meet an individual who is fond of the Canada Goose (Branta canadensis). Even resolute bird-lovers seem to curl their lips when these large honkers waddle near. While it may be difficult to imagine today, since every time we step outdoors it's as if a Canada goose is waiting to greet us with a blat and high-feather-five, populations were dangerously low at the start of the 20th century. Laws were enacted to protect and even reintroduce them into parts of the country from which they'd vanished. Fast forward to 2015 and they can be found in every continental North American state and province at one time or another. And they're like a good episode of Cheers...everyone knows their name.

This is a cool little izakaya I’ve had my eye on for quite a while. When I finally managed to stop by, they told me they’d be closing the next month due to eviction from the building, which will be torn down.

I tried to come back on three evenings for one last hangout and to hopefully get a photo of the owner, but they were closed each time. Had I misunderstood (highly likely) the closing date? Had they lied to me about the date because they didn’t want me coming back?! (I hope not, but possibly).

It turned out that the owner decided to only stay open afternoons for these last few weeks. Most of her customers are day drinkers anyway.

And, she wasn’t mad at me or anything. In fact, she was only too happy to pose for a portrait. But instead of making my usual midnight memento, I had to shoot in daylight(!) I’m not used to that, but after a few high balls it all ended up working out.

[ENG] The Palacio de Carlos V is a controversial and misunderstood monument located in the Alhambra next to the Nasrid Palaces. It is often presented as an attempt to destroy the Muslim past of insensitive Spanish monarchs, although history shows the value of the symbol they gave to the conquest of Granada and their intention to reinforce the sense of capital by establishing their residence in the Alhambra. It was built at the southern end of the Patio de los Arrayanes, and for its construction the pavilion opposite the Comares tower was demolished. It was projected by Pedro Machuca as a square 63 meters on each side with a circular patio inscribed in its interior of 30 meters in diameter, an unprecedented arrangement in Renaissance architecture. It consists of two floors and its height is 17 m. Its construction began in 1527, was slowed down several times, and was definitively interrupted in 1637 with walls and vaults completed due to lack of water cover. The works were completed in 1930. Since 1958, the palace has been the headquarters of the Museum of Fine Arts of Granada, and since 1994 also the Museum of the Alhambra. More photos in the album Palacio de Carlos V.

Frecuentemente se presenta como un intento de arrasar el pasado musulmán de unos insensibles monarcas españoles, aunque la historia evidencia el valor del símbolo que concedieron a la conquista de Granada y su intención de reforzar el sentido de capitalidad estableciendo su residencia en la Alhambra. Se alzó en el extremo sur del patio de los Arrayanes, y para su construcción se derribó el pabellón opuesto a la torre de Comares. Fue proyectado por Pedro Machuca como un cuadrado 63 metros de lado con un patio circular inscrito en su interior de 30 metros de diámetro, disposición sin precedentes en la arquitectura renacentista. Consta de dos plantas y su altura es de 17 m. Su construcción comenzó en 1527, se ralentizó en varias ocasiones, y se interrumpió definitivamente en 1637 con muros y bóvedas concluidos a falta de cubrir aguas. Las obras se terminaron a partir de 1930. Desde 1958, el palacio es sede del Museo de Bellas Artes de Granada, y desde 1994 también del Museo de la Alhambra. Eastern Copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix)

A few years ago, I captured this shot near my favorite running trail—an area where Copperheads were a familiar sight during my afternoon runs and bike rides. One evening, curiosity led me back with my headlamp and camera in hand. It was pitch black outside, and within a couple of hours, I found two quietly moving through the grass. For this shot, I laid flat in the grass, using my 50mm prime and a flash to light the scene. (You can see the reflection of my flash in his elliptical pupil). Despite their reputation as venomous vipers, Copperheads are remarkably calm when given space. I've always found them to be mesmerizing—beautiful, elusive, and deeply misunderstood.

The air is impregnated with a thick fog, which is trying desperately to melt into someone’s song. There are no birdsong here; they are asleep. Instead, amplified by the quiet, you can hear that timeless hymn hummed by your heart and those distant waterfalls. The zephyr, although well-intentioned, feels a little chilly to your skin. You shiver. Indeed, it feels a little chilly to perceive infinity. Don't worry. Here and now, time is not the fourth dimension anymore. You are.

Yes, you read it right, my last ferris wheel in the series. Some may have misunderstood it as 'last will'. That can't be possible as I don't have any wealth to pass on except my photos in flickr. lol

You might be surprised, but this is not a flower – it’s a fungi, monotropa uniflora. One of its common names is Indian pipe. Wikipedia says it is quite rare; I’ve seen it in Ontario forests before several times – but never such a beautiful specimen.

From the “Ontario’s Old Growth Forests” book by Michael Henry and Peter Quinby: Indian pipe, one of the most misunderstood of our forest floor plants, establishes relationship with the forest mycorrhizae promising a share of the energy it captures from the sun in exchange for nutrients. Instead, it never photosynthesize – it simply steals nutrients from the trees and plants around it using fungal threads as conduits.

In case you are wondering, I have done quite a lot of postprocessing - but mostly on the background, trying to preserve the way the actual “flower” looked.

The Samaritans are planning to close more than 100 branches across the UK and Ireland, the BBC has learned.

In a presentation to staff, the suicide prevention charity's chief executive said "at least half" of their branches will close.

Dozens of branches have voiced concerns, some fearing the proposals will lead to an exodus of volunteers: "They're dismantling something that has worked for 70 years," said one volunteer.

The Samaritans said having more than 200 branches "is not sustainable and hinders us" from providing the best service.

Founded in 1953, the Samaritans focus on preventing suicides by connecting trained volunteers with people who are struggling.

Well I suppose if it's a telephone service you probably don't need any branches, just an office to run the business.
