MISUNDERSTOOD

The icy stare of an actually sweet and misunderstood cat.

Lucio Dorr ‘Sin título’ (Misunderstood), Exhibition ‘Geometry to Its Limits’, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Buenos Aires (MACBA), Buenos Aires, Argentina

Monster Claradolly is emotionally complicated and is often times misunderstood. She doesn't articulate words; instead, she expresses herself with physical gestures and grunts. When Monster Claradolly gets upset she throws tantrums. She gets particularly upset when people ignore her or don't understand what she wants. Monster Claradolly means well, but she doesn't always know the best way to communicate her intentions. She is very strong, and sometimes tries to push people aside when they're in her way. Monster Claradolly doesn't like to have her photograph taken because she is very self conscious about her looks. She is also very nervous about meeting new dollies; it usually takes her a long time to warm up to them. Monster Claradolly loves to get messy, when she gets paint all over her from painting she thinks it's really fun. Monster Claradolly also has very sensitive teeth, and doesn't like to eat or drink things that are too cold. She often times has trouble sleeping at night, and hides when she gets upset.

A gesture easily misunderstood

This flower did not want to be plain and round. Oval was this flower's destiny. I've never seen a flower shaped like this before. Taken at All Seasons Nursery in Grand Forks, ND.

There always has to be that one old hippie Boomer guy in the crowd expounding on how "alligators are misunderstood...." < insert huge eyeroll > trying to sound kind and wise. And there definitely was on this day when we were all looking at this particular gator. I just rolled my eyes to Tom and noted, "They're not misunderstood. They eat people."

There have definitely been stories in the media in recent times (within the past 10 years) of alligators snatching kids, adults, dogs, you name it in Florida, but including here in south Florida. In one case it was a poor woman named Shizuka Matsuki whose dog got snatched when she was taking it for a walk around at Silver Lakes nature preserve in Davie, south of us in Broward. She tried to wrestle the dog from the alligator but then the gator dropped the dog...and went for her instead. Grabbed her and pulled her under and that was the end of that. Police were notified after residents noticed the dog running around the lake attached to a leash, injured, but no owner. Witnesses recall having seen a woman walking that dog earlier, and that's how police put two and two together. :/

This story stands out in my mind for several reasons, but one being because my hair dresser (a Japanese woman, like the woman who got snatched) personally knew the woman, since she had been a customer of hers for a few years.

Nobody ever thinks they're going to die by being eaten alive by another apex predator animal, and where authorities are having to cut open the captured animal to pull your body parts out of its stomach, like what happened to Shizuka, but trust me, it happens. Never go close to any lake's edge anywhere in Florida, especially if there are posted signs warning about alligators. Even in the heart of cities and suburbia, where they have man-made lakes amongst all the housing tracts and business complexes.

There's a huge gator here in Boca Raton that lives in the lake between the library at Spanish River and a condo complex, smack in the middle of a very busy urban area, next to a very busy roadway, I-95, and the TriRail and Amtrak train lines. Plenty of pictures of that gator to be found here in on my Flickr. Including the time it decided to hang around OUTSIDE the lake, on the grass right next to the paved trail. O.o It was HUGE. Could EASILY take down an adult human, no issue. The head and jaw on that thing are MASSIVE.

And I've seen countless stupid people walking their dogs right up against that lake's edge, and in one case, letting a little toddler play right up against the edge, despite all the posted signs. It's a tragedy waiting to happen. People are willfully stupid.

Alligators are terrifying, that's all I can say, which is why it's a big deal to get to see them. When you're looking at one you're looking at something that absolutely WILL suddenly lunge and grab onto you with its massive jaw if you give it the opportunity, exerting 2000 psi pressure to crush and immobilize you, then pull you down into the water and do the Death Roll - spinning you around and around as it's continuing to crush you, until you both drown and succumb to having your body being ripped apart. Then it finds a nice safe place to stuff your body to snack on for the next week. Then goes back to lounging around like what we see in this pic. These things look slow, stupid and harmless when we see them resting, but when they snap into predator mode they move FAST, and get violent, and stubbornly pursue capturing you because they're hungry. "I'm not leaving here until I got SOMETHING to eat dammit, whether it's your dog or kid or you, I'm GONNA eat today...."

But meanwhile there's the goofy Hippie Boomer loudly pontificating about how misunderstood these poor creatures are. Poor, poor misunderstood little alligators!

Beautiful creatures, sorely misunderstood.

Big Mac may look scary, but he is extremely loveable. Misunderstood, Big Mac is looking for a pal to play with. Will you invite him to play. He will ward off other monsters lurking in the closet and shadows.

Big Mac is made of royal blue fleece with lime green arms and legs, big eyes and a warm heart. He measures 16 inches tall and is stuffed with non-allergenic supreme poly-fill.

I first started photographing graffiti in 1999, and in 2000 I setup a website to share my photos. Initially a mix of different subjects, but it soon became almost entirely of graffiti. I uploaded over 6000 photos to this site. Eventually Flickr came along a few years later and I started using that instead, and stopped updating the website. I shut it down completely a few years ago.

I occasionally get requests from people for photos of pieces by specific graffiti writers, and I thought it might be a good idea to upload them all to Flickr.

Most of these photos were taken on film, scanned, and saved at a small size, back in the day when people were still using 56k modems to connect to the internet and small filesizes were desirable. So apologies for the quality and size for some of these. Someday I'd like to get them all scanned in again at a higher resolution.

This picture is not what you think, hence the name. It's a shot of the full moon throught my window, but I have to admit I liked the implied image.

And all your words are misunderstood,

When the day seems lost from the start

You must follow your heart,

You must follow your heart.

A heart of ice or simply misunderstood?

Hurrah! The new carpet is now in the hall stairs and landing and also the back bedroom! I'm looking more smug as our house is getting finished, bit by bit!

solamente no intentan y entienden

tratando de ser malentendido

justamente un producto de mi niñez

sigo encontrandome a mi mismo fuera

tu no puedes decir que no he intentado

quizas lo intente con fuerza

sin excusas

no quiero disculparme

o justificar tus mentras

ven encuentrame

despues dimelo

mirandome a los ojos

trying to be misunderstood

but it doesnt do me any good

love the way that they smile at me

and that face for eternity

now let them all fly off

when it comes down

it all comes down

and you will not be found

when its over

it's all over

even if i make a sound

i'll be misunderstood

by the beautiful and good in this city

none of this was planned

take me by the hand just don't try and understand

trying to be misunderstood

just a product of my childhood

still i find myself outside

you can't say i haven't tried

perhaps i tried to hard

no excuses

won't apologise

justify your life

come find me

tell them to me

look me in the eyes

i'll be misunderstood

by the beuatiful and good in this city

none of this was planned

take me by the hand

just don't try and understand

can't forgive sorry to say

you don't know your guilty anyway

isn't it funny how we dont speak, the language of love

If you label him as ‘bad’ he probably will be, but if you wait a moment you may find he just wants to make you laugh. I have a peripheral fascination with the not uncommon fear and distrust of clowns, or deeper than that, the underlying misunderstood intentions based on general first impressions and preconceptions we have of other people. This sinister looking fellow was responsible for many a smiling face and not a single fearful tear as he entertained a group of eager children, but based on this photo would you trust him to make you laugh?

So Scientologists are misunderstood philanthropists.
