Close-up of the Rock Garden (karesansui, 枯山水, dry landscape) of Ryoanji Temple (龍安寺 or 竜安寺, Ryōanji), Kyoto, Japan.

For a view of the whole garden, click here.

Nearby the Kinkaku-ji (The Golden Pavilion, Kyoto) is the Ryoanji Temple (龍安寺 or 竜安寺, Ryōanji) .

The temple's name is synonymous with the temple's famous Zen garden, the karesansui (dry landscape), Rock Garden.

The temple and its gardens are listed as one of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto, and as an UNESCO World Heritage.

""This simple and remarkable garden measures only 25 meters from east to west and 10 meters from south to north.

The rectangle Zen Garden is completely different from the gorgeous gardens of court nobles constructed in the Middle Ages. No trees are to be seen; only 15 rocks and white gravel are used in the garden.

The walls are made of clay boiled in oil. As time went by, the peculiar design was made of itself by the oil that seeped out.

This international famous rock garden is said to be created at the end of Muromachi Period (around 1500), by a highly respected Zen monk, Tokuho Zenketsu.""

information - from the brochure

""Meaning of the garden.

Like any work of art, the artistic garden of Ryōan-ji is also open to interpretation, or scientific research into possible meanings. Many different theories have been put forward inside and outside Japan about what the garden is supposed to represent, from islands in a stream, to swimming baby tigers to the peaks of mountains rising above to theories about secrets of geometry or of the rules of equilibrium of odd numbers.

Garden historian Gunter Nitschke wrote: "The garden at Ryōan-ji does not symbolize anything, or more precisely, to avoid any misunderstanding, the garden of Ryōan-ji does not symbolize, nor does it have the value of reproducing a natural beauty that one can find in the real or mythical world. I consider it to be an abstract composition of 'natural' objects in space, a composition whose function is to incite meditation.""

On the peaceful Siboney estate, located in the beautiful area of Santagueda, in the municipality of Palestina, Colombia, the sun shines generously almost all year round, bathing the landscape in warm light and vitality. This sunny climate favors the abundance of birds that make this place a true natural sanctuary. The diversity of species that inhabit and visit Santagueda is impressive, and the local community has developed a deep awareness about the importance of preserving these precious creatures, recognizing them as messengers of prosperity and guardians of natural balance.

Since ancient times, birds have been symbols full of hope, transformation, and miracles for humanity. Their ability to fly between the sky and the earth makes them a living connection between our everyday world and the spiritual realm. In many indigenous cultures of Latin America, these birds hold a special meaning: they are heralds bringing messages of abundance and guides inspiring inner growth.

In Siboney, each day dawns with a natural concert, filled with angelic songs that soothe the soul and release everyday tensions. Listening to those fresh and varied trills is like opening a door directly to peace, freedom, and clarity. Observing the birds in their flight and their multicolored behavior is a constant reminder of the harmony that nature offers to those who know how to listen.

The rooster (Gallus gallus domesticus) of the Siboney estate is a vibrant and majestic bird, displaying exuberant and colorful plumage. The deep reds and intense oranges of the neck and comb stand out, contrasting with iridescent greens and shiny blacks in the tail and back feathers. Its bright red, wide, and upright comb stands proudly, as do the crimson wattles hanging beneath the beak. The expressive and alert eyes denote unwavering energy, while its proud posture conveys leadership and attentive reflexes. The silky texture of the feathers on the neck and tail, fluttering in the wind, adds a sense of movement and life to the rural landscape of Santagueda. This rooster is a visual emblem of renewal, prosperity, and bravery, serving as a colorful and sonorous reminder of the power of each dawn.

The soldier obeyed, healed and publicly thanked the god. Perhaps for this reason, says Mercurialis, the ancients have represented Aesculapius with a rooster on his fist. (wikipedia)

Thank you all for your kind messages on my previous photo!!!

Again, I can't imagine and not even intented to leave flickr (that was a misunderstanding!), not by this time... the friends I met here give me far more than any kind of negative influence can do to leave this place.

I still haven't found what I wanted to find when posting the previous pic (as it's for work)... I got to try harder and need to continue to try not to get distracted so easily from other things.

Have a great week everyone!

"In the Morning Light" I did it, this not retouched at all!

Misunderstanding

Genesis

There must be some misunderstanding

There must be some kind of mistake

I waited in the rain for hours

And you were late

Now it's not like me to say the right thing

But you could've called to let me know

I checked your number twice, don't understand it

So I went home

Well I'd been waiting for this weekend

I thought that maybe we could see a show

Never dreamed I'd have this feeling

Oh but seeing you is believing

That's why I don't know why

You didn't show up that night

There must be some misunderstanding

There must be some kind of mistake

I was waiting in the rain for hours

And you were late

Since then I've been running around trying to find you

I went to the places that we always go

I rang your home but got no answer

Jumped in my car, I went round there

Still don't believe it

He was just leaving

There must be some misunderstanding

There must be some kind of mistake...

Well, I wasn't sure to do it but these are difficult times so finally I made up my mind and here it is.

(As a side message - to all my flickr friends. My MS is getting the better of me lately and has dramatically slowed my typing skills and speed. I will be experimenting with voice to text soon, but from experience, there will be some spelling mistakes and misunderstanding. Meantime, I will plod along, but I might not be commenting quite as much. If I just occasionally get in a short comment, or a single appreciative word or even just a fave click to you, you can take it as me still greatly appreciating all your lovely shots. I hope to continue enjoying flickr for a long time, but it will just be somewhat slower for me. Thankfully, the shutter finger still works well enough! As a sign of my typing speed, this took 25 minutes to type out! Speedy Gonzales I'm not!!! ; ) )

Hiding behind a curtain in a suspect's apartment, and then your feet will give you away? Not for Tintin and Snowy. They just placed toy statues of themselves behind the curtain to fool the villain, got the evidence, and escaped from the scene before he even realised what was going on ;-)

I've noticed that there was some ambiguity, or confusion about what a silhouette is, and what is not, for MM's theme "Silhouettes". Some pictures were not accepted, because they show shadows instead of silhouettes. However, I've also noticed that several pictures in the - very beautiful - example gallery www.flickr.com/photos/130205975@N03/galleries/72157684149... show shadows. And while the moderator warned that she did not consider every capture in the gallery as a silhouette, she did not point out which captures, and why. Which may have lead to misunderstandings, at least for some of us, because in the theme's description shadows were not specifically excluded from the theme, either.

In this capture (and my previous, "official" MM one) the subjects were placed very close to the curtain, and very close to the window, the interior is featureless (except for the texture of the curtain), and the edges match the outline of the subject(s) exactly. So in my understanding I have created both a shadow, and a silhouette. There may even be a little confusion regarding what a silhouette is when it comes to different languages, because, for instance, in German the term Schattenriss (Schatten = shadow) is described as a silhouette as well, and even includes the word shadow; and in English the term for this specific art technique is only "silhouette" (it's the same in French, Italian, Spanish...).

I might make you feel uncomfortable since my English is not that good. I study English because I want to no more cause a misunderstanding.

On the edge of the pylon from the side of the compartment is a fresco by Viktor Vasnetsov - "Holy Prince Andriy Bogolyubsky", whose image in modern Ukraine constantly causes negative emotions and misunderstandings among history connoisseurs.

The pylon depicts the enemy who destroyed Kyiv in 1169, ordered the burning of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, hated the people of Kyiv and fought with them all his life.

But for Vasnetsov and his customers, it was: "The type of Russian prince-hero who combines militant courage with Christian piety. A courageous face with a firm character of a tireless prince expresses confidence in himself and the success of his endeavors."

On the edge of the pylon from the side of the central nave, the holy great martyr Boris. He is wearing princely clothes and a crown, but his eyes are humbly lowered. He has a spear in his right hand, a cross in his left. Artist Viktor Mykhailovych Vasnetsov.

On the right side of the photo, on the edge of the pylon, from the side of the second compartment in the west-north side, the fresco "St. Venerable Nestor the Chronicler". Artist Viktor Mykhailovych Vasnetsov.

It doesn't matter much to me

When I saw him my heart moved and was beating very fast. I was deeply touched by its grandeur, its beauty and elegance. The fox is a good friend for me and yet there remains a distance, remains a secret that I will probably never find out and that's a good thing. Why do people always want to know everything, although we usually don't understand animals or don't want to understand them, which is even worse. Our distance to nature, to all the creatures out there, has become much greater. I recognize this by seeing people who no longer have or can develop a feeling for animals. That makes me very sad. The fox is not only clever but a very important link in the animal world. I was able to watch him for a very long time last year and was simply fascinated by his skills. The care he takes for his puppies is overwhelming and so heartwarming. We humans could learn a lot from it, I'm convinced. It may well be that I will show more photos of my friend the fox here or of his offspring. Hopefully from this year and otherwise from before.

The fox - my friend.

»My life is monotonous. I hunt chickens, people hunt me. All chickens are the same and all people are the same. That bores me a little. But if you tame me, my life will be bright as the sun. I will learn to distinguish the sound of your footsteps from the others. All other steps chase me into my burrow. Your steps will lure me out of my den like music. And then look! Do you see the wheat fields over there? I don't eat bread. Wheat is of no use to me. The wheat fields remind me of nothing. And that's sad! But you have golden hair. How wonderful it will be when you have tamed me! The golden wheat will remind me of you. And I will love the sound of the wind blowing through the wheat..."

Then the fox fell silent and looked at the little prince for a long time:

– »Please… tame me!«, he said.

"I'd like to do that," answered the little prince, "but I don't have much time. I have to make friends and learn many things.«

"One only understands things that one tames," said the fox. »People no longer have time to get to know something. They buy everything ready-made in the shops. But since there are no shops for friends, people no longer have friends. If you want a friend, tame me!”

"What do I have to do?" said the little prince.

- "You must be very patient," answered the fox. “You will first sit on the grass a little distance from me. I'll look at you out of the corner of my eye and you'll be silent. Language is a great source of misunderstandings. But every day you sit a little closer..."

LoL

.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-

there is an age when betwen mother and son can be misunderstandings, but fortunately this photo is just a pose to joke, in fact i love him very much and He love me too!. lol

A tame eagle flies near the Fort of Portalet once guarding the fronteir with Spain. The road is narrow and winding here as you can see if you like to here: www.google.co.nz/maps/@42.8840345,-0.5625647,3a,75y,354.4... As you drive through look up to the right to see the fort built into the hillside. Just in case you don't know click on the road to move forward. If it doesn't look like my picture you may need to turn around to start :) Please remember to drive on the right :)

Edit: My reference to "tame" means although the eagle was flying around and taken from the same spot its position was "optimised" for artistic purposes. Sorry for misunderstandings. It was also mentioned as "composite bird" in my tags

Whitby's east side, with the ruins of the Abbey and St. Mary's perched on top of the cliff, seen from the Lighthouse on the West Pier. Whereas the Abbey was intentionally demolished in the 1540s, St. Mary's became the helpless victim of modernising transformations, mostly in the 18th century. You may spot the gravestones surrounding St. Mary's. Two graves you will not find here: Dracula's, because he did not exist, and James Cook's, because he was killed in Hawaii in 1779 by indigenous people. In today's terms, we would call the events surrounding his death a "cultural misunderstanding". So was colonialism in general.

We're all islands shouting lies to each other across seas of misunderstanding

[Rudyard Kipling]

“It wasn't only wickedness and scheming that made people unhappy, it was confusion and misunderstanding; above all, it was the failure to grasp the simple truth that other people are as real as you.”

― Ian McEwan, Atonement

Here we are at 6 a.m. walking a nice 1-hour loop from home down to the beach and back another way.

I had to give up on this walk for about seven months because Tidda couldn't handle it at first. She would be a bundle of nerves, literally looking over her shoulder all the time as if she thought somebody was following us. She would freeze at every sound and often would refuse to walk on. It was just too challenging for us at the time, so I had decided to leave it alone for a while and use the car.

Generally I'm not a fan of "training." I think it's much easier to do harm than good with any kind of confrontational training technique. Training is typically about achieving specific results but in my experience the best approach is always to focus on the depth of the relationship. There is no mystery. Building trust through healthy daily routines, learning each other's individual signals, having fun together, being reliable, forgiving and sincere with our dog - these are the things that are needed. Once a loving solid relationship is built, every other problem will basically solve itself.

Most important in my view is being responsive to our dog's requests. There is this widespread fear that a dog will try to control us if we give in to what they want. I feel that is a tragic misunderstanding which leads to people ignoring when their dogs communicate their needs, forcing the dog to then turn up the volume louder and louder and/or develop neurotic behaviors. It breaks down trust to ignore someone's real needs.

Our dogs communicating their needs to us is EXACTLY what we want and when they experience us responding and understanding, it builds trust. This then leads to a situation where the dog can lower the volume, so to speak, and ask with very subtle signals and also listen to very subtle signals. I have never known a dog that wanted to use me or control me. It's humans who do that kind of thing.

Of course, many people do use positive training as a fun activity together and a language to communicate, but somehow I could never get very enthusiastic about it beyond a few basics. Maybe I'm just not very good at it. I find it too distracting to be thinking about the rules of this artificial game.

Last week, I finally felt it was time to try walking this loop again after giving Tidda seven months to grow secure and practice smaller walks in the park. It was a non-event. A quiet breakthrough. She willingly walked along, enjoyed it, explored, looked around, and when something startled her, she quickly and easily recovered. We've done it several times already. In similar fashion, she's had other quiet breakthroughs. And I think those are the best kind!

Strawberry Fields Forever

Let me take you down, 'cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields

Nothing is real and nothing to get hung about

Strawberry Fields forever

Living is easy with eyes closed

Misunderstanding all you see

It's getting hard to be someone but it all works out

It doesn't matter much to me

Let me take you down, cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields

Nothing is real and nothing to get hung about

Strawberry Fields forever

No one I think is in my tree

I mean it must be high or low

That is you can't you know tune in but it's all right

That is I think it's not too bad

Let me take you down, cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields

Nothing is real and nothing to get hung about

Strawberry Fields forever

Always know, sometimes think it's me

But you know, I know when it's a dream

I think a "No," I mean a "Yes"

But it's all wrong

That is, I think I disagree

Let me take you down, cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields

Nothing is real and nothing to get hung about

Strawberry Fields forever

Strawberry Fields forever

Strawberry Fields forever

As the weather today returned to normal spring weather, a bit below normal actually, I rewatched "The Joy Luck Club". (I’ve read the book, too.) And it hit me just like the first time I saw it. I was sobbing by the end. Big, deep, almost hyperventilating, sobs. At the theatre this made my then boyfriend and his mother nervous and embarrassed. And had them asking why should this affect me so? Adding, "You’re not Chinese." Geez. Really?! I could relate to so many of the issues between the mothers and daughters. The assumptions. The misunderstandings. The inability to speak their truths. The wanting what is best for your daughter, but going about it all the wrong way. That is universal.

Bon Bon actually became quite alarmed and crawled into my lap and put her forehead to mine and stayed there for the longest time. She licked the tears off my cheeks.

Here’s to Sundays and good cries.💙

For the 😄 HaPpY CrAzY Tuesday 😄 theme: "Childhood Memories", I present to you: 'Bromsnor' (however without his mustache).

He was the old-fashioned constable from a TV children's series 'Swiebertje'.

In the street where I lived, was one older single lady and only she had a tv in that time. All the children went to her place on Wednesday afternoon to watch this series. It was fun ;-))

Swiebertje is a series of Dutch children's books, written from 1936 by John Henri uit den Bogaard, and a Dutch television series based on the books, broadcast by the NCRV in the 60s and 70s.

'Swiebertje' is a "lovable vagabond". During his wanderings, he always got in trouble. 'Bromsnor' seized every opportunity to lock Swiebertje in the 'cage under the tower', without any clear form of trial. Often there was a misunderstanding in which Swiebertje was falsely accused of something, but it always ended well.

"Bromsnor" was quite grumpy, but also had a big heart in the right place. In real life he had a black mustache and absolutely no red hair and wearing two shoes, unlike this figure (artistic freedom shall we say? ;-))

However, over the years, the red moustache has disappeared...... and to my big surprise there was a sensual mouth underneath. But also the rest of the body and clothing are subject to the ravages of time.

He is sitting on the floor in an old bathroom, that will be renovated soon. What to do with Bromsnor……..?

Happy Crazy Tuesday everyone ;-))

Kiarostami, the famous Iranian filmmaker, once said that love is born out of a misunderstanding—because when we don’t really know each other, we think we’ve fallen in love. But when we face the reality of who people are, we realize that what we imagined never truly existed.

I believe the opposite. People can understand each other—if only they dare to show their true selves. The problem begins when we hide, when we polish and censor ourselves just to impress. Over time, that makes us sad—and a sad soul can no longer love.

Like the moon: whether crescent, half, or full, it’s always beautiful to me. Even when humans set foot on it and many said, “There’s nothing special about the surface,” I still loved it—because to me, it is alive, and it carries life.

For a period of time after some misunderstandings we will call it the commercial was the designated switchers of CTM multiple times a week and a day. On this very early morning the commercial crews with the 80 for their switcher is inside CTM preparing to make another pull and spot. On the right another truck is loaded with coiled steel to be taken to a local business for processing, on this morning and I'm sure every morning the trucks were lined up in an endless parade.

Crazy Thuesday 2.9.2025 "A spoonful of ..."

To avoid misunderstandings: cats lose the outer shell of their claws from time to time (about every 4 weeks) when they scratch. I collected these claws from my beloved Sheila (2004 - May, 2nd 2019) over a period of 3-4 years.

Salem....We’re close… but it’s complicated. We don’t always speak the same language, or give each other what we need. But even through the mess, the silence, the misunderstandings .... I’m still here. I always will be. I love you, even if I’m not built the way you hoped. I wish I could give you everything you’ve ever needed… but all I have is what’s the real me, and it’s yours

from the body language of both the kids I presume some misunderstanding between them.

thanks for every one for views, faves, and comments.

Here the full lighthouse comes into view. The name "Betsie" was actually a misunderstanding. French "coureurs de bois" and English speaking settlers would sometimes misunderstand each other in Michigan's early days. French people noticed saw billed ducks in the area "Bec aux Scies" and English settlers thought that "Betsie" was the name of the area. Funny.

I wish I was. I had an appointment with a nurse very early this morning in preparation for my operation tomorrow: in the middle of which my phone kept ringing. It was the hospital with some complications with ended up with them saying my operation had been cancelled. Then at 2.00pm I got another call (just after I had eaten some lunch - thank goodness it was only soup) saying it was a misunderstanding and it was all back on again!! Anyway unless they ring again, this is me signing off for a while. I shall be in hospital for 7 days and who knows what I will feel like afterwards. See you on the other side

This Nkisi Nkonde, captured at Faro Municipal Museum, is a type of power figure from the Congo Basin in Central Africa, specifically associated with the Kongo people. It is a form of Nkisi, a term referring to sacred objects in Kongo spirituality that are believed to house spirits or spiritual forces. The Nkonde (meaning "hunter") is a particular type of Nkisi known for its aggressive, protective, and judicial roles.

Key Features of Nkisi Nkonde:

Appearance:

Typically, these figures are humanoid in shape and made of wood.

They are often adorned with metal objects like nails, blades, or other sharp implements driven into their surface.

The inclusion of these materials is symbolic of the figure's activation or its use in fulfilling spiritual or legal purposes.

Function:

Hunter of Justice: Nkisi Nkonde was used to enforce laws, settle disputes, and exact punishment for wrongdoers. It was believed to "hunt down" those who broke oaths or contracts.

Protector: It served as a guardian against evil forces, illness, or malevolent spirits.

Healer: In some cases, Nkisi Nkonde was associated with healing, balancing spiritual forces within the community.

Activation and Ritual Use:

A spiritual specialist known as an nganga would "charge" the Nkisi Nkonde by embedding medicines (bilongo) into cavities in the figure.

The bilongo materials could include herbs, animal parts, minerals, or other substances with symbolic or spiritual significance.

The act of hammering nails or driving blades into the figure was a way to "wake" or "activate" it, often accompanying rituals and invocations.

Cultural Context:

Nkisi Nkonde reflects the Kongo people's intricate belief systems, which intertwine law, spirituality, and community order.

It was both a physical and metaphysical tool, acting as a tangible focal point for spiritual forces and social accountability.

Colonial Misunderstandings:

When European colonists and missionaries encountered Nkisi Nkonde, they often misinterpreted them as "fetishes" or objects of idolatry, failing to grasp their deeper cultural and spiritual significance.

Many Nkisi Nkonde figures were taken to museums, where they remain as artifacts of African spiritual heritage.

In Modern Times:

Nkisi Nkonde is studied as an important symbol of Kongo art and spirituality.

It is often featured in museum collections and exhibits focused on African art and the spiritual practices of Central Africa.

"The rooster is a symbol of vigilance and activity. For this reason it is found in ancient monuments among the attributes of Minerva and Mercury. It also indicates combat and victory, because it prefers to die than give in. It immolated itself on the lares and on Priapus. It was also offered to Aesculapius for the healing of the sick. Mercurialis relates that, having addressed to this god a blind soldier named Valerius Aper to recover his sight, the god replied that it was necessary to take the blood of a white rooster, make eye drops with honey and rubbed his eyes with it three consecutive days. The soldier obeyed, healed and publicly thanked the god. Perhaps for this reason, says Mercurialis, the ancients have represented Aesculapius with a rooster on his fist. The statues of Bacchus They sometimes represent him with a rooster at his feet because he was sacrificed for the conservation of the vineyard. The Gauls had taken the rooster on their banners; it may be the cause of the Latin misunderstanding of his name and. The French have long held it as an emblem."(wikipedia)

(wikipedia)

Happy New Year to all my dear friends and family, lots of love, Poppy xoxo

“Is the Mona Lisa an 'accurate' representation of the actual human model for the painting? Who knows? Who cares? It's a great piece of art. It moves us. It makes us wonder, makes us gape - finally makes us look inward at ourselves.”

MONA LISA – NAT KING COLE

Beneath an enigmatic smile

the spirit lays so vibrantly

shining bright and lovingly

smile outwardly; smile inwardly

secrets stored to be revealed

delicious and delectable

yet innocence will still prevail

amid the sea of ecstasy

blue eyes cast down to hide the skies

the sun; the moon and all the stars

mirrors of immortal soul

distant depths that seem so far

often inpenetrable; aloof

sometimes but then again

to mete out little bits of truth

weaken the strain and spare the pain

ease the burden of the walk

the path so long; so arduous

a neverending quest for love

dismiss misunderstandings part us

there's more to me than meets the eye

a cliché that befits us all

so never judge the outward cover

for the book beneath is beautiful

love yourself and love each other

give special thanks for this New Year

remember those we left behind

in memories; in clouds of tears

begin again; soon Spring will come

and all things new will spring

that which is born from earth and dust

will rise again; will make hearts sing

there is much sadness in our world

much work still to be done

but be strong for those who are weak

bring hope to hearts; forgive the wrong

it does not matter who you are

we are the same beneath same skies

brothers; sisters; family

me and you; we and I

lay down your arms; lift up your hearts

hug your neighbour; hug your foes

love is born of understanding

free hearts from fear; stamp out all woes

we are strong; we stand together

how happy will this make our Earth

the answer's plain; the answer's simple

let the New Year mean rebirth

cast out the old ways closed in minds

free ourselves to let new in

new ways; new days; new understanding

Happy New Year; let peace begin.

p.s. Seems I did such a good job that a few people think this is the actual Mona Lisa! This is me, my friends and I am immensely flattered. My enigmatic smile suddenly got very big!!!!! 😉

My trips to the Annapolis Valley to photograph Eagles has been limited this year. I did have the opportunity to spend 4 hours there this morning and was able to get a few shots. Thanks to Dragon Master for assistance in Post Production as my eyes are not as good as they should be.
