A beautiful day begins with a beautiful mindset. When you wake up, take a second think about what a privilege it is to simply be alive and healthy. The moment you start acting like life is a blessing, I assure you that it will start to feel like one. Time spent living is time worth appreciating.

Set fiɾe to the ɾɑin

In a pub in Rotterdam, a man relaxes as he reads a book.

It's so great to see so many of us girls getting out shopping and enjoying being the girl we always knew we were! For some of us who are on the fence wanting to go out shopping here are some tips from my experience to help getting there!:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

-- Prepare- Make sure you have everything ready including a route and makeup and essentials in you hand bag.

-- Dress nicely- I tend to over dress for shopping but try to look your best and wear what makes you feel feminine. Remember you might be trying on outfits so something you can get and out of yourself helps. 2 pairs of shoes too, leave one in the car so if your feet start hurting or you break a heel you have a backup pair.

-- Timing- I try to go weekdays and early. There are more women and less families, couples, and kids around.

-- Know the stores- If it's a mall I usually check out the mall map to see where the stores I like are and where to park for them.

-- Attitude- Although everyone has been nervous try to get into the mindset of being a woman. Keep saying to yourself that you are female and going to do what females love doing!

-- Going in- Don't be a lurker hiding behind clothes racks and walls, women don't do that. I suggest to immediately find something that you want to see closer. Most times you will be greeted by someone in sales so smile because it makes breaking the ice so much easier. When asked if you need any help try to gush a bit over that item you have chosen to look at closer. Saying things like "This is such a cute dress!" , " I love the colors in this!", "What sizes does this come in?" or just " I love this!" will make the sales person feel at ease and implies that you are really in tune with the feminine world you want to be included in!

-- Buying and playing dress up- It's fine to look around the whole store to see everything. When you find something you want pick it up and also gather other things you may like. Someone will eventually come over and ask if they can hold your selections and offer a try on room until you are done looking. When you decided what you want to buy tell them that you are getting this but want to look around more and they will hold it for you up front. This also confirms you are a paying customer and now frees you up to play "dress up" maybe choosing some things you would have never thought to try on! This approach works like a charm.

-- Compliments- Always give compliments to the girls working in the stores. You can ask if something they are wearing was bought in this store because you love it or maybe the girl has amazing hair or a fantastic make up job that you like. People get closer to you when you notice nice things about them!

-- Be considerate- Do not try to force yourself into something that is obviously too small for you and stretch or tear it. Also keep some folded up paper towels in your purse and use it to cover the neck area when putting on or taking off a pull over top or dress. Better yet ask them if the have a face guard and they will appreciate that you care about the merchandise.

-- Names- Always ask for their names and tell them yours, it makes it more of a intimate and cordial visit. I have had so many sales girls greet me by name on returning visits and goes a long way it showing you care about them.

-- Check out- Be pleasant and talkative while purchasing your new item. Tell them thank you for all the help or that you love the things in the store and will be back!

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Using these simple tips will make your shopping trips much more fun and I have noticed that if you make it fun for them and they see you having a good time it makes them feel good that they were part of your good experience. I have stopped into stores that I have purchased in just to say hello even if I wasn't going to shop in that that store that day and they appreciated that. I have also done really girlie things like getting cupcakes and bringing them into the store for them to have! One girl said that I was so nice and none of their customers ever did anything like that for them! I have also shown pictures on my phone of me out dressed in a dress or outfit that I bought for them and they loved seeing them! So get out there and enjoy yourselves!

Many countries have armies of all different shapes and sizes. Some have only small defensive armies, while others have larger more readily available armies. The difference between major nations and minor nations is that the major nations continuously develop and field new vehicles and equipment, while minor nations simple buy older and even obsolete vehicles from major nations. The percentage of each countries military budget inevitably goes towards some form of research for new vehicles, not all of which make it past the drawing board. There are many reasons for this, such as, too expensive, too complex to build, mechanically unreliable, too heavy or too light, or there is simply no real demand for such a vehicle, plus many more. However, the worst reason that a tank never makes it beyond the drawing board, no matter it's potential, is political interference.

There is an established hierarchy in the Tarakian military, made up of long serving loyalists, decorated military personnel, and people with family connections. Although this cohort have served the nation well, they are often criticized of being stubborn, inflexible, unopen to change, and stuffy. For some time, there has been a growing dissatisfaction with the way the upper echelon of Tarakian military is comprised. A new, younger, more progressive generation have been growing support in favour of change, not aggressive change, but a reform on how major decisions in the military are made. A push for a wider group collective, rather than a cabal of cigar smokers deciding among themselves in their reclusive corridors of power.

The Established, and the Progressives. The Established, eager to maintain the status quo and of the mindset that you don't fix what isn't broken. The Progressives, understanding that if you follow a set military doctrine for long enough, eventually someone will study it and find a way around it. Knowing the Established would never freely relinquish an inch of power, the Progressives knew they had to formulate a plan to take it. Even though the Progressives don't have the power to sway final decisions, they do hold considerable power when it comes to initiating research and testing, with the final say on production being left to higher powers. Their plan was to put forward a vehicle that on paper, would be easy for the Established to dismiss, and then use it to prevent the Progressives from putting forward such projects in the future. The Progressives were betting on the Established being complacent and arrogant about the situation, and not fully appreciating the situation. Research and testing can be initiated by the Progressives, so there was nothing the Established could do to prevent this.

During testing, it quickly became apparent that the Established had underestimated the Progressives, and their project. The new tank, named Onyx, not only passed all tests, but surpassed them by a margin the Established would be unable to dismiss. Scrambling for a way to save face, and to prevent the Onyx from making it to production, a tank they see as too aggressive for a purely defensive army, the Established reluctantly concede just enough power to the Progressives on the condition that the Onyx doesn't make it beyond testing. However, knowing they have the upper hand, and could push the Onyx into production, the Progressives accept the deal, with the condition that a set number of production batches will be run, and small regiments of Onyx tanks will be given to front line battalions. The Established, knowing they have no choice but to agree, and concede certain future decision making powers.

Though the tank is rather large, space inside is quite limited. Due to the unusual design of the vehicle, it has a rather shallow hull, which therefore limits overall internal space. At least one third of the vehicles internal space is taken up by the engine and gearbox, with the remaining space being taken up by the crew, gun, and ammunition. The unique shape of the tank comes from it's unusual design, where a SafeShell system is encased in heavily angled, bolt on composite armour. The nose section of the tank is made entirely from composite armour, and is impenetrable to all known anti tank projectiles.

The onyx is intended to be used as a heavy breakthrough tank that will spearhead armoured assaults. Taking advantage of a combination of impenetrable frontal hull armour, immense engine power, the stability from the double track pod system, and a fully stabilised 130mm auto loaded gun. The idea is to overwhelm the enemy with firepower and speed. Even though the tank weighs in at 72tons, it has the mobility and speed of a medium tank. This incredible performance comes from the 2200hp engine and the double track pod system, which gives excellent off road acceleration and maneuvering. Due to having four sets of tracks, the tank has unmatched weight distribution, which allows it operate in terrain that any other tank of this weight would get bogged down. This gives the Onyx unique tactical options that any other tank of it's weight simply wouldn't have.

The gun is the same 130mm found on Ares MkII main battle tank, but has been heavily modified to work in conjunction with a new auto loading system, and a new stabilizer. A bore extractor and a new muzzle break have been added in combination with the 6-rounds per minute firing rate. With internal space at a premium, the Onyx can only carry a meager 36 rounds, of which only the ammunition stored in the turret are stored in blow out compartments. The Onyx only carries one type of ammunition, which is an APDSFS round with 750mm of penetration. A firing rate of six rounds per minute can be achieved thanks to the completely automatic loading system. Two 20mm auto-cannons are located on either side of the main gun, which are intended for enemy infantry, since the tank carries no high explosive rounds. A roof mounted .50 machine gun can be controlled from the commanders control panel.

Due to the rather flat design of the hull, no existing engine would be suitable without a protrusion either on the bottom, or top of the tank, so a new engine had to be designed. A micro fusion reaction was initially considered, but after some number crunching, the price per unit became unjustifiable. Although reluctant to design an entirely new engine, approval was granted for testing, and a prototype multi fuel engine capable of producing 2200hp was produced. Unfortunately, due to the torque produced by such a powerful engine, a new gearbox had to be designed to cope with the stress, and to accommodate the track pod system.

Space inside the tank is limited to such a degree that there isn't even room for fuel tanks, however this turned out to be a blessing for the design. Eight individual fuel tanks are housed in the superstructure of the track pods, four per side. Having the fuel tanks exposes them to potential damage in combat, and even though they're only protected by 50mm of armour in either side, each tank has it's own fuel cut off system. Additionally, the fuel tanks as a whole are safeguarded by a sophisticated fire prevention system, which rapidly fills the damaged tank with an inert expanding foam that instantly douses any flames in the event of a breech to any tank and a subsequent fire.

Due to the unusual design of the hull, limited internal space, and the front nose section being comprised entirely of composite armour, the drivers position is in the turret basket, meaning that he rotates when the turret does. This placement was unavoidable, and caused several of the test drivers to experience motion sickness due to the changeable orientation. The Onyx has a crew of four, including a commander, gunner, driver, and a loader.

Sometimes I feel trapped in my own head. In a way that my head feels like a box that is never big enough for me and where every thought is like a breath that steals the last bit of oxygen of that tightly sealed box...so much that you slowly start to suffocate from your own thoughts.

My mindset, or PRE-VISUALIZATION of the type of images that I wanted to capture on this trip was for them to be monochromatic. As I worked on the images in post a lot of them were just as I invisioned when I pressed the shutter, but a few really surprised me as I began working on them, and this being one of those images.

This image REALLY works best when viewed large as the blacks just suck you in and then your mind focuses on the gator laying there. This image has become a particular favorite of mine from this series and I cannot wait to get it printed.

The developmental patterns of Africa have long been strained by inefficiency, lack of sustainability, and the physical and mental heritage of oppressive postcolonialism. Yet today transformation toward a more innovative stewardship could surface, driven by a change in the underlying mindset by Africans themselves and also by growing opportunity for women by strategic self-conception. It could also become particularly important for future African-European relations

The figures investigates the histories of our inaccurate and stereotypical words and ideas and suggests alternatives. It talks about the whole of Africa as Africa because the issues discussed in the book are relevant for the whole. The zapped Africa focuses on white occidental myths about Africa—because they have been the most dominant, the most negative, and the most in need of change. Africa is, however, very much a part of the occidental subconscious. In the first part of the twentieth century, most peoples of the Western world believed that Africans could be subjugated because they were primitives, natives. During much of American history, a large majority of western governments considered racist beliefs and exploitation of Africa acceptable. Positive myths about Africa also serve Western self-definition. Those who are dissatisfied with modern globalization life might construct Africa to present viable alternatives.

The Mind of Africa

Dr. Abraham has brought to bear on the problems and prospects of the New Africa an approach which is the fruit of a thorough grounding in the philosophy of the Western world, combined with the natural commitment of a young African intellec- tual to the cause of African freedom. The result is an analysis of the complex processes of social and political change going on in Africa, which comhines (as Dr. Abraham justly claims in the Preface) “the externality of an outsider and the sensibility of one with an inward knowledge of things.” It is this factor, apart from the value of the factual material assembled, which makes his book one of the most significant contribu-

tions in recent years to an understanding of the forces at work in molding the social structure of the independent African states.

If one seeks a central theme, it is to be found in Dr. Abraham’s assertion of thc importance of ensuring that African culture is not destroyed by the impact of Western techniques and concepts. Notwithstanding their diversity, he maintains that all African communities present a number of ideas and attitudes which are common to African society as a whole. He identifies these and states crisply the issues that face AIrican leaders: what is there in African culture that may least disruptively be dis- carded? What is there that Western culture offers which may be taken over and inte- grated with African culture?

The first chapter is devoted to a discussion of the nature of culture. Dr. Abraham emphasizes the integrative function of culture by discussing its role in forging acommon bond among people both within and outside the sphere of activity subject to inter- vention by the state.

In the second chapter he undertakes a description and analysis of African culture, taking the Akan of Ghana as his paradigm. He starts with their religious beliefs, elaborating the central concept of a world which is shared by human beings, ancestral spirits, and gods. He then deals with the theory of government. Political power is shown to have been derived from popular consensus. The power of the traditional ruler was always subject to well recognized limitations: no important decision could he taken without discussion permitting all views to be put forward; a ruler acting con- trary to the opinion of his people-as indicated by the advice of his counsellors-or neglecting affairs of state, could be removed. On the other hand, once consensus had been achieved by full and free discussion, there was no toleration of a dissenting view- point. “Such luxuriesas minority reports were ...foreign to the political arrangements of the Akans.” A short description of the legal system brings out its important features, namely the absence of separation between the executive and the judicial power in the state, and the failure to draw a clear dividing line between civil and criminal offences. The remainder of the chapter describes Akan literature and discusses the interaction of Western culture with Akan culture through the influence of formal education, the

missionary, and commercial activity.

In the third chapter Dr. Abraham turns to the contemporary scene in Africa. After

a discussion of the effects of colonial rule, he applies himself to the problem of main- taining democracy in the new states. He examines the institutions and processes re- garded as essential in the Western conception of democratic government, and shows how accepted ideas on these matters fail to take into account the special circumstances of the independent states of Africa. While he agrees on the need for “a judiciary which

Book Reviews 911

is reasonably impartial,” he rejects the proposition that democracy is impossible with- out a plurality of parties.

The fourth and final chapter puts the case for African unity within the framework of a realistic assessment of the relevant factors. Economic resources, actual and poten- tial, are surveyed, and the importance of shared history and common culture stressed; but there are warnings against the dangers of tribalism, and the risk of a mass party being in fact controlled by a small elite not animated by the ideals which brought the party to power.

Dr. Abraham concludes his book by reminding his readers that while it has been said that it took the United States 170 years to achieve unity, there are pressures operating on Africa which justify the belief that Pan-African progress is likely to be faster. The establishment last year of the Organization of African Unity is an encourag- ing endorsement by African politicians of the judgment of a young African intellectual.

Copper Town: Changing Africa. The Human Situation on the Rhodesian Copperbelt. HORTENSPEOWDERMAKNEewR.York and Evanston: Harper & Row, Publishers 1962. xxiii, 391 pp., index, 1 map, notes, plates, references, 16 tables. $7.95.

Reviewed by C . FRANTPZo,rtland State College With one month’s notice, the author went to Luanshya, the urban development surrounding the Roan Antelope Mine, intending to explore the transmission of Euro- American culture via mass media. She postulated that leisure activities, being largely voluntary, might serve as an index of individual and social change. Africans were trained to administer a questionnaire to a “sample” of Copperbelt adults and to take notes during conversations and activities in homes, at public meetings, and during movies. Selective depth interviews, casual visits and participation, and the use of topical essays written by intermediate and adult students on their values, aspirations,

and images were also used to procure information.

The data gained about African attitudes and behavior contributed sufficient insights

that Powdermaker decided to expand her study and give primary attention to the general processes of individual and social change. In her view the direction of all change, whether organic, psychological, cultural, or social, is from differentiation toward convergence. But in analyzing her own and others’ data, she borrows heavily from psychoanalytic theory, especially Erickson’s work on ego-identity.

The study explores some of the general characteristics of tribal life in Northern Rhodesia before Europeans arrived. I t is said that family life, especially, unavoidably generated both conscious and unconscious hostility and anxiety; this in turn had to be channeled through witchcraft, quarreling, alcohol consumption, or other mechanisms. Breast-feeding established relationships of trust and stability between mother and child, but an unsatisfactory resolution of the weaning crisis provoked much insecurity. Still, the breast provided a symbolic model for many adult relationships, especially those involving authority. However, the social system did not encourage individuals to become autonomous by seeking spontaneous growth or self-awareness, as the chil- dren had a nearly complete role identification with adults. Since a “developed” identity and greater autonomy of the self was atypical, .4fricans have generally been “fixated” at the oral level.

Until Europeans arrived with new values and goals the Africans had no signifi- cantly differentadult models available to them. The foreigners’ presence produced both social and personal strain, yet their missionary and educational activities “may” have produced individuals who become “more successful’’ in adult socialization.
