Over Hardwick Hall last year, the roar of its 4 engines unmistakeable.
There are only two airworthy Lancasters left in the world - 7,377 were built. Lancaster PA474 was built at the Vickers Armstrong Broughton factory at Hawarden Airfield, Chester on 31 May 1945, just after VE day. The war in the Far East ended before she was deployed and she did not take part in any hostilities.
First of all, wishing you all a future filled with sound health, wealth, safety and soaring success!! Happy New Year. This photo was taken near Yumthang Valley while exploring Sikkim and eastern Himalayas.
Going back through my archives and came across this. I was initially disappointed in this shot because it was very cloudy and drizzly on this day in such a way that the incredible Millau Viaduct didn't look as impressive as it truly is. It absolutely dwarfs the surrounding Tarn River valley, which is no little feat. Decided I might as well keep up with the recent bridges/viaducts theme and post it for some year end closure. Used a 3 minute exposure with B+W 6-stop ND filter to get sufficient streaking in the clouds. I wish I could have got a better angle on the valley for perspective but my options were limited. Requisite gobsmacking numbers: bridge deck is 240 meters above ground level, length: 2,500 meters (approx. 1.5 miles). The deck is only the 12th highest, but the tallest "mast" is 343 meters, making it the tallest bridge in the world.
Took a long and rather tricky road trip to get here, and I almost got stranded in my little Peugeot rental at one point where I followed GPS instructions and turned down a road in the dark wee hours, that turned out not to be a road. A 3-point turn very nearly landed me in a ditch.
Northbound Alaska Railroad train 235N, the once a week Winter Aurora passenger train, has a baggage car, diner, and two coaches trailing a pair of SD70MACs as they step out over the mighty Tanana River on the Mears Memorial Bridge. The 700 ft long span designed by Modjeski and Angier and built by the American Bridge Company and is one of the longest simple thru truss spans in the world. It was the final link in the Alaska Railroad upon completion in 1923 and President Warren Harding traveled here, the first president to ever visit Alaska, to drive the golden spike at the north end of this bridge on July 15, 1923. The bridge is named for Colonel Frederick Mears of the Alaska Engineering Commission who served as chief engineer of the Alaska Railroad's construction. To learn more about Col. Mears check out this link: www.alaskahistory.org/biographies/mears-frederick/
The Tanana is one of Alaska's great rivers flowing 584 miles from the eastern edge of the state before emptying into the Yukon River. Take note of the black and white tripod with the flag sitting on the ice in the river. Since 1917 that has been Alaska's own unique version of the lottery when railroad workers revived an older practice of betting on the exact time the Tanana River ice will break up here. Today individuals throughout Alaska (and by mail from elsewhere) purchase tickets betweenn February 1 through April 5 of each year. You write in the exact date and time you think the tripod will move. It has a line extending to a tower on sure with a clock in it and once the tripod moves about 100 ft it will snap the line and stop the clock. Last years jackpot was over $220,000 and if you care to learn more or make a wager before it's too late check out this site for more info:

Mighty Wings
Cheap Trick
There's a raging fire in my heart tonight
Growing higher and higher in my soul
There's a raging fire in the sky tonight
I want to ride on the silver dove
Far into the night
Till I make you take me
On your mighty wings
Make you take me
On your mighty wings across the sky
Take me on your mighty wings
Take me on your mighty wings tonight
With just a little luck
A little cold blue steel
I cut the night like a razor blade
Till I feel the way I want to feel
There's a raging fire in my heart tonight
Growing higher and higher in my soul
There's a raging fire in the sky tonight
I want to ride on the silver dove
Far into the night
Went for a 40min drive up to Mulgoa this morning before work, with a prediction of early fog in Western Sydney. It didn't disappoint. A beautiful golden sunrise and the valley filled with fog made for a great way to start the day. Hope you like "Mighty Wings". Cheers, Mike
We have no real idea how old our little Mouse is. We rescued her around 8 years ago from a hell hole in Romania. Despite her getting on in years we estimate at least 12 she does not let that slow her down. Here she is enjoying her recent holiday with her 10 brothers and sisters down in Devon UK

This pictures was taken in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, in the famous Banff National Park, which is the oldest National Park in Canada (1885).
The peak you can see is one of the most photographed mount of the Canadian Rockies : The mighty Mount Rundle.
It's a dip slope moutain with one side that is steep and irregular and the other side that is planar. We can easily see the strata of limestone on the planar side.
This is a view is from Vermillon lake, located west of the city of Banff.
Some of these oaks grow hundreds of years. They have seen old castles being built and decayed, they have watched many kings to come and go. They've lasted to the present, old and mighty, and now they are watching us.

You have to have a mighty acorn to produce a mighty oak.

The mighty mongoose is a fierce fighter and often moves around as a gang. It is fearless, has lightning-quick reflexes, and has no hesitation in taking on even poisonous snakes. Most predators leave it alone.

Yes indeed these giant wind turbines are tall and mighty when it comes to the awesome power that they produce from stroke to stroke.
Pushing on that trigger is like pulling magic into my very soul....Darrell.

Today’s mighty oak is just yesterday’s nut, that held its ground.

One of the biggest Leopards in the Mara, the huge Double Cross male Leopard was on the prowl early in the morning. Walking along the gulley floor he made a half hearted attempt of stalking some wildebeest feeding nearbby. Having blown his cover he walked along a dry river bed with hit tail in the air, towards his resting place for the rest of the day.

I like to use my Nikkor 28-300mm a lot during everchanging scenes like sunsets and sunrises that allows me to zoom on some beautiful details. In this case in a minute I was able to catch both wider (here) and narrower
