eastern middle-earth

This pendant is second in a series of MiddleEarth's photo pendants. I am bewitched by the magical details from my middleearth surroundings, the Azore Islands, where I live and create MiddleEarth's Jewels. Be it the almost mystical scenery, the way the moss adorns the lava stonework or the winding lava stone walls and houses that seem to grow out of the oh so green earth.

Portuguese blue and white ceramic tiles are world famous for their beauty and storytelling.

This broken 'Paz' tile (translates 'peace') was found on a crumbling lava stone wall. In times past the road signs in these islands were all of locally made ceramic tile. 'Progress' has ousted these humble works of art to memory.

So beautiful, weathered by time..and now 'caught' in this pendant before it is lost forever.

" 'And please don't cook me, kind sirs! I am a good cook myself, and cook better than I cook, if you see what I mean. I'll cook beautifully for you, a perfectly beautiful breakfast for you, if only you won't have me for supper.' " Bilbo Baggins - The Hobbit

This is a part of The Middle Earth Project set that I'm working on.

"there he stood far into the night, hearing only the sigh and murmur of the waves on the shores of middle-earth, and the sound of them sank deep into his heart"

Taken on my local canal Feb 2009. Original size. It was very close.

Thanks for spending time looking.

Now we turn to the Misty Mountains, with its caves and underground lake where Gollum lived on an island for hundreds of years.

"Some of these caves, too, go back in their beginnings to ages before the goblins, who only widened them and joined them up with passages, and the original owners are still there in odd corners slinking and nosing about.

"Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature." -- "Riddles in the Dark," The Hobbit, JRR Tolkien

In our day and age, this place is known as the Tuckaleechee Caverns in Townsend, Tennessee.

"Dimly Frodo saw the river below him rise, and down along its course there came a plumed cavalry of waves. White flames seemed to Frodo to flicker on their crests and he half fancied that he saw amid the water white riders upon white horses with frothing manes."

Over the weekend I went to see the final installment of the Hobbit movie. Having been to New Zealand this year I was interested in looking close at the scenery and indeed I did recognize a couple of shots. Of course much in the movie was rendered to look like no place on earth, but this shot I took hanging out of a helicopter comes close. I think I may have a Lord of the Rings Marathon this coming holiday week so that I can see more of the landscape of Middle Earth, otherwise known as New Zealand.
